Sigh...well I may now admit defeat on this off season. Would love to have Spanky and Skaggs back.

I felt like for us to have any chance of a playoff birth Corbin and Miley need to, at worst, hold their form from last year. We're going to have to pray for a few guys to have career years. Our rotation looks very average now with potential to be dreadful.

Hopefully Bradley is not held back too long and lives up to the hype.

Wonder what Huddy's timetable is like right now... if he has one.

****... what a horrible start to the year.

Hudson tweeted a about two weeks ago that he is throwing on flat ground and is on target for a post all start break return. As far as Bradley, he tweeted he is with the team on thier way to Australia, which has to be a good thing. Also, with Corbin done, Cahill iffy and Arroyo out for a few weeks, Bradley is there for now and if he is up now, no point in sedning him down unless he struggle. The only reason to hold him back until June 1st was for an added year of control, but if he pitches one ball before then, that year is lost.

Thank God our farm system is loaded with highly regarded young arms that could maybe step in----oh wait.

I'll say this... if we go with Bradley and things don't pan out for him in April and/or May, it will be very hard for Towers not to entertain offers for either Owings or DiDi...

He should be talking to the Mets who need a shortstop in exchange for some pitching. I think Didi is who they dangle.

There have been rumors floating around for the past 2-3 weeks that the Mets and Towers have been communicating about some type of deal.

Jarrod Parker is going to need a second TJ surgery and will also miss 2014. It's crazy how much this surgery is done on pitchers now.

I think previously guys just pitched (poorly) through the pain or their careers ended. Also the emphasis on velocity over endurance certainly cant help.

and at least some of these injuries have to do with the strain PEDs put on tendons.

I agree with the first part and Nolan Ryan has been saying it for years. That is a reason he got rid of pitch counds in the minors.

For the second part, I am not a doctor by any means, but I am pretty sure the UCL hold the bones together in the elbow, so PED use would have little to do with that. Now, it it were ligaments that held the tricep or forearm muscles to the bone, I would agee. To me, the UCL tear for a pitcher is like a MCL/ACL tear for a Running Back.

Gambo is "reporting" that the Dbacks are leaning towards Delgado taking his spot in the rotation, not Bradley.

No doctor either, I know what you mean about the way PED enhanced muscles can tear away from bone, but I gotta think harder you throw the more torque and strain is being put on your elbow and the ligaments that hold it together.

Obviously these types of injuries occured long before PEDs but I do think drugs have played a part in their rise.

But I think the larger problem is what you agreed with me on, the emphasis on velocity over endurance.

There most likely isn't just one factor contributing to the rise in pitcher injuries, particularly Tommy John surgeries... I think parts of all you have suggested are contributing factors to various degrees. I also firmly believe that kids have been, and continue to be pushed at very young ages (9, 10, 11...) to be strictly pitchers. They are being taught how to throw curve balls sliders... It used to be that most great pitchers weren't pitchers in Little League...and many didn't start pitching until after high school!
Parents... and the increase in competitive/travel youth teams are playing a big role in what we see with players like Corbin, Parker and so many others...

I concur. I managed a Deer Valley LL Majors team that won the Deer Valley championship, and then went on to defeat Buckeye and Gilbert. As soon as the season was over, some of the players went straight into travel ball. Then Fall Ball. Then simutaneously the school season and travel ball, etc. etc.

Some of these kids have no off-season while their bodies are growing.

Yep... I used to coach 11 & 12 year olds for many years... finally had to call it quits as I just couldn't take the parents any longer.
The problem is they all want their kids to be the next Roger Clemens. So they identify them at young ages and then try to make them specialists by pigeon-holing them into the Pitcher spot. The kids are throwing all year long, and worse, being taught to throw junk!
The wear & tear on arms, elbows, ligaments...the kids are just too young and not nearly developed enough to handle that over the long term...
I heard a great interview with Fergie Jenkins - who lives up in Anthem, over the weekend. He was stressing this exact point and said he up until he was a senior in high school, he played first base and outfield. He said all the pitchers in the majors that he played with all had similar experiences...

Well what a kick in the nuts, that is certainly going to make things a lot harder for us this season.

Totally agree. I've had kids come up to me and say "Hey coach, check out my awesome curveball". I'd tell them AND their parents that no kid that I was managing was going to throw a curve while they were on my team.

Parents can be just impossible to deal with. Anything past a fastball/changeup is a big no-no with me when kids are in their teens.

Don't get me started on Football parents. That's a whole separate animal.

I read somewhere ('can't remember where) that Gibby said he knows whom he is leaning toward in the Owings vs. Didi choice for starting SS, even before playing in Australia.

And it has been written that whichever doesn't make it will be sent down to the Minors to play everyday.

My gut feeling says that, as exciting as Didi began, Owings has the greater potential and will prove to be the more solid player. Despite his being another right-handed bat in the lineup.
