Could we see a Massie Trade?

Considering hes in a contract year and will want to be paid as a starter, with the drafting of DJ Humphries and the play of Watford at RT, Massie is clearly not in our long terms plans. If we trust Watford as the starting RT and Huphries as the backup, do we deal Massie so we can at least get something for him before he walks in the offseason?

Its a good idea, i cant help but to think that Humphries was an inefficient use of a pick given that Massie and Watford can start.

I wonder what Massie is worth, maybe a 4th...

NO!!!! NO!!!!

If Watford goes down that Means Sowell.

Which means Palmer goes down.

Which means the Cardinals season goes down.

Keep Massie!

I don't trust Humphries as the backup. I don't think they do either.

The something we will get from him is depth on the offensive line, in case of injury, during a season the Cardinals will be in the mix for a championship. Even if his production for this year is only a single game that helps bring a trophy, that is more valuable than a future mid-round draft pick.

For Massie, it would be better to show a commitment to his current team and give the appearance of taking the suspension and possible demotion like a man. Free agency can bring a sense of desperation for some organizations, and if more than one team is interested, Massie will get a nice pay check. Pushing for a trade, and spending half the season trying to adjust to a new team (either on the bench or looking bad) could easily diminish his value - not just in dollars but in the number of teams looking to bring him in.

Even if he just rides the bench, it is worth it to the Cardinals to have someone on the roster ready to step in. During the off season, Massie's agent can easily spin the 'got in the doghouse, but has learned from it' angle. It is just too risky (for both sides) to trade for a mid-round pick. Not to mention the risk of the other franchise handing over a draft pick for a possible non-starter, already with a suspension, that is in his last contract year.

Just don't see the value for any of the involved.

To cardfaninfl, your assessment makes a whole lot of sense to me. So long as we have Palmer upright and starting for us, it makes sense to keep Massie as depth assurance on the O-line. With Palmer under center, we can be in contention for a Super Bowl appearance. So long as that is a possibility, I wouldn't chance trading Massie. If Palmer gets hurt for the season, we can use Massie for trade bait for another QB, or a draft position to acquire a QB.

It would depend on the return. I doubt they trade him for a late round pick. I doubt it will happen, but if some team offered up a 3rd rounder for him, then you'd have to consider it. But trading him just to trade him doesn't make sense.

+1

Keep him for depth unless you get blown away by the offer. Even then I would think long and hard before making the move. With the way DJ is coming along so slow it would mean Sowell at RT. Do you really want to see that again?

I agree with RINGLESS. While I could understand an offseason trade, though he might not even be under contract, at that time. For this season, he provides necessary depth. And maybe next year as well if Humphries doesn't develop.

As mentioned earlier offensive line depth is ideal so keep him. If a guard goes down then you can always move Watford back to Guard if need be and have Massie and Humphries at tackle.

I agree, a 3rd round pick or higher would have to be considered. That said, I couldn't see a team trading a 3rd rounder for Massie.

If DJ Humphries wasn't a giant anchor of suck on this team, then I would say yes, but since Humphries is a giant anchor of suck on this team, I say no.

Just because he might want to be paid like a starter (not sure where that statement came from anyway) doesn't mean he will be paid like a starter, especially because he isn't the starter.

If we have learned anything from the Keim era, its the importance of depth at every position. Let Sowell go. He isn't productive on any level.

What team is going to paid a 3rd rounder for 10 games of a guy who's a pending free agent already in Stage 4 of the SA Program?

I'd certainly take a trade for a 4th-6th round pick, but no one is going to give that up for a half-season rental.

I certainly dont trust Sowell or Humphries at this point to start if Watford and/or Massie go down (whomever starts). That said, the prospective compensation of a 5th or later would not justify such a trade.

Massie has almost no trade value once teams look into what happened with his DUI. Keep him as a backup, we will have more injuries on the oline, and he could be a key replacement at some point.

no way... he provides solid depth on the O-line, which is the most important part of the team IMO, because they keep Palmer alive. No Palmer, no playoffs.

Can't believe the way BA has resurrected Palmer. Wasn't crazy about getting him, but dude's playing lights out.

Massie could end up being the starting RT for the Cards. Maybe even sooner than we think:

Mike Jurecki ‏@mikejurecki
BA: Earl Watford has played well in the run game but has given up too many hits on the QB.

Agree with all of these posts. With the talent and depth on this roster I doubt SK does much in FA this coming offseason and Massie + others lost may garner us a comp pick of equal or greater value then we could get for him in a trade anyways.

Yep. If Massie ends up starting then Watford becomes a quality backup and we have the best situation yet.

Not believing this. Big Earl is putting in the work and is still learning. To me he has improved over the last 2 games. IIRC Massie used to give up some pressure more often that we liked and it took him a while to get up to the speed to handle some rushers.
