Desperation has raised its ugly head. The Alex Smith trade hits the Cards hard. First not only did the Skins get a third, but it looks like they’ll get a player too. Worse the Skins gave Smith a $90mil+ deal. The price of poker just went up. The contract is the biggest concern. Sure Smith has won some big games, but he’s more of a high quality journeyman than a QB who can put a team on his back and carry them.

Surely Cousins will want more. It’s true he’s won nothing major yet, but most observers would put him above Smith. I don’t see how the Cards could or should pay that. It’s entirely possible this will also raise the cost of players like McCown. More importantly whichever QB leaves the Vikes they’ll want more too. Bradford was on the Cards’ list if available. Coupling the idea of moving way up in the draft and paying the higher slot money with increased FA money makes the 2 QB strategy less feasible. Add in fixing the O-line and the problem becomes far worse. Even with potential salary cuts the Cards will be squeezed. Something will have to give. I’m guessing one of the QB slots will go low dollars.

Card's can't compete with other teams that have so much more cap money for Cousins. McGown will be 39 years. It will be depressing if he is the starter. Keim and Bidwill said this is their top priority and will be aggressive in filling the QB need. Not sure where they are headed.

If the Cardinals sign McCown, the good part of that is that it means the QBOF plays sooner rather than later. But in the interim, McCown is competitive enough to win games.

Cut Fitz and HB and sign Cousins. That's the only way to go.

Stupid move on Washington's part. I'm glad we didn't pay that much for Smith, either in picks, players, OR money.

Structure will be the key. I don't think it necessarily changes Cousins' market all that much. I would hope that most of that money is optional, bonuses, etc. Do we have a report on guarantees?

EDIT: 71 of 94 million is guaranteed. OMFG, Snyder, you moron.

Edit 2:

This article kind of talked me off the ledge.

the amount of guaranteed money for a 4 year deal is just insane.... Smith got $30mil more guaranteed on this four year deal than Carr got on his five year deal.

yep...and for players its all about that guaranteed money...having over 70% of the contract being guaranteed is going to make it much harder to negotiate with QB agents now.

Cousins is going to get paid like an elite franchise QB, when he’s just a decent option. I’m not gutting my team to overpay for him. He’s not Aaron Rodgers.
And whose better?

Cousins MIGHT be an elite qb, he sure did put up ELITE number from the past 3 years. We have better weapons, and a better defense. He will put is over the top. Bradford/Taylor/draft pick save Darnold/Rosen wont do it

Was he able to put Washington “over the top?”

Elite QBs doesn’t struggle against divisional rivals. They also lead their team to a 10 win season no matter how underwhelming their supporting cast might be. No one on planet earth classify Cousins as anything close to an elite QB. That label only belongs to Rodgers, Brady, & Brees.

As I said, he might be elite if he has a better defense and more weapons. Who else put up 4000 yards in the past three years?

Who is the better option right now?

Does Washington have a defense or offensive weapons like AZ??

Again, whose better??

That’s not the point. Because of the FA market for QBs, he’s going to be in high demand, and as a result, will get paid like a Rodgers, Wilson, Stafford, et al, when he’s not in that class of QB.

Please stop implying the blame on his “lack” of supporting cast(or at least “former” now) on his poor play against divisional rivals. If he’s able to play decent against non-divisional rivals, he should do the same against divisional rivals. Why doesn’t he? Because he’s predictable & just not that good. Not to mention, he always plays like crap down the stretch of the season.

I’d rather test fate with a unpredictable rookie QB than a guy who I guarantee is not going to get us anywhere but constant 8-9 win seasons.

What is the point? Who would you rather see at qb in a Card's uni???

Yall still want to be cellar dwellers because the Rams, Niners, and Hacks are locked at the qb position. All young qb's too.

I wouldn't totally hate this move if it were the Jaguars because they are a QB away from contending for a Super Bowl. Washington isn't even close.

Is he predictable, or is that predictable play-calling?

I would rather not waste another 4 years on a qb that COULD be great, while we know what we could get out of Cousins and he could be BETTER then what he is now.

We have an old Fitz who is not a #1 WR any more, DJ, and...no offensive line. We have AN offensive weapon, and a former one who is a decent possession receiver now.
We are about a guard and a center a away from being a decent OLine. That if DJ is healthy and ready to go.

I also believe in Chad Williams. DJohnson is better then anyone on the skins on the offensive side.

A guard and a center away from only being a decent OL means you don't have a good OL. And I would argue that, no, we're not that close on the OL.

You can 'believe' in Chad Williams all you want, but he is most certainly NOT a weapon at this point. He is hoping to be relevant and on the roster.

So, we have ONE offensive weapon, like I said. A really, really good one, to be fair, but it still makes us one-dimensional, at the moment. Sure, the draft and FA can, and I hope will, change that. But that's how matters stand at the moment.

we could just sign Tim Tebow and then get a bunch of 350 lb linemen... run that center dive all game long... start passing when there is only 5 minutes left in the game... Tebow was always good in crunch time....he just sucked for the first 55 minutes of the game.
we could change up that dive with a QB option every now and then.

when is the last time anybody ran a power I in the NFL?
