So if we were to assume for a moment that Jovanovski is traded (the Islanders are the rumored team), the Coyotes would be more than $10M under the salary cap floor (the point of which they must spend over), not including whatever junk is sent back in return. What are the Coyotes going to do then? There's nothing left in free agency but crap, so their only choice would be to trade for somebody else's overpaid garbage. How in the world is that progress?

Or, they go out and load up the team with a bunch of tier 2 guys, which is who they are going to get anyways at this point . . . Danny Markov, Brad Ference, Shane Endicott, Mike Comrie, Mike Johnson, Michael Pecca, etc. I haven't looked at which of those guys are under 30, but those would be the target.

By the way, the Dallas Stars are the only other team, along with the Coyotes, who haven't made any signing in free agency yet (new player or even re-signings) yet.

Comrie is 26 and both Endicott and Ference are under 30 but are AHLers. The rest are 30 or older. Josef Vasicek is 26 and is a mildly interesting free agent. Jamie Lundmark is still out there, as are Juraj Kolnik and Jan Bulis. Its really slim pickings out there.

For goalies, David Aebischer, Alex Auld, and Robert Esche are on the market. The team could wind up just signing one or two of them and let them fight it out with LeNeveu and Tellqvist. If you can't have quality, might as well go for quantity.

Maybe the Coyotes are innovating. Teams have already done deferred compensation. Maybe they're starting prepaid compensation. They're gonna give cash to guys who are playing on other teams this year so that they can pay them less next year.

LOL. I got nothin'. :|

The fact that you mention Lundmark really shows how few options the Coyotes have out there. He couldn't even make an impact on the bad 2006 Coyotes team. Signing him should be barely newsworthy, but at this rate, it would be considered the main free agent acquisition of the offseason!

There's an article on ESPN.com Insider called "Is a Jovo deal in the works?"...if anyone has access to it.

I guess the Coyotes were serious when they said no over 30 free agents

Maybe not. Apparently Mike York is going to save this franchise.

) to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Last season, York recorded 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 66 games with the New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers.

A native of Waterford, Michigan, York was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the sixth round (136th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In 515 career NHL games, York has amassed 308 points (121 goals, 187 assists) and 131 penalty minutes.

More details to follow.

Mike York is 30 1/2 years old. By the time the Coyotes win their first game, he will be 31 years old.

I got a call from a Coyotes rep today, because I bought tickets to a game once. I asked him why I should buy season tickets when we know they are going to suck. He laughed and said he understood what I meant. I may catch a few games, but this is a team going nowhere. We have zero top line talent with the exception of Doan, and every top free agent is signed. Maybe we'll be good in a few years but our drafting skills have been less than stellar.

Those salespeople have a tough job. Before last season started, I got a call from a sales rep, and he attempted to entice me by mentioning specific free agents that the Coyotes hadn't signed, and ultimately didn't sign (can't remember the names, though). I thought that was weird.

I hope next season turns out to be like the 2001-2002 season, the best coyote season ever

The Coyotes have signed winger Tomas Surovy. He spent last season in the Swedish elite league where he put up 55 points in 55 games. The season before that he played with Pittsburgh where he scored 25 points in 53 games. He'll be looking to compete for a job on the bottom two forward lines with the big club.

^ I guess he's having a decent rookie camp.

Has anyone been to one of the open practices yet?

Interesting little wrinkle in the Surovy contract -- the team can decide before Nov. 1st to return him to his Euro team, in essence giving him an extended tryout. That is pretty unusual for an NHL contract.

GM Maloney said that Lisin is coming over to play in the NHL, but Kaigorodov (guy we got in the Comrie deal) has decided to just stay in Russia.
