NCAA | Cutler has strong Pro Day throwing performance
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 13:53:17 -0800

Bryan Mullen, of the Tennessean, reports Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler had a strong throwing performance at his Pro Day workout Friday, March 17. Cutler threw about 50 passes to former Vanderbilt WRs Brandon Smith, Erik Davis and TE Dustin Dunning. In swirling winds, Cutler made almost every throw from short out patterns to deep balls. Representatives from 25 NFL teams witnessed an ideal throwing performance by Cutler in less ideal conditions.

Question? How many top NFL quarterbacks in the last 25 years have come from colleges that are perennial doormats without at least having had a winning season their senior year?

EDIT:

Did some research during halftime of NCAA basketball game. Looks like only Eli Manning fits that description among current QB's. Somebody may know of another but he's the only one I could find.

Stanford hadn't had a losing season in 17 years prior to Elway's senior season.(1964-1981) They were in the Rose Bowl as recently as 2000 and were 9-3 in 2001 with wins over USC and Notre Dame.

Hardly perennial doormats like Kentucky,Vanderbilt,Duke, Wake Forest, Illinois, Indiana, Baylor and Kent State.

May be a QB from Indiana in the NFL though.

Jay Cutler impressed scouts at Vanderbilt's pro day. Cutler worked out with receivers Erik Davis, Marlon White, and Dustin Dunning. His throws were accurate and once again he displayed incredible arm strength. Cutler is expected to be a top ten pick on draft day. The Tennessee Titans, who have the third overall pick, sent general manager Floyd Reese, offensive coordinator Norm Chow and quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson to watch Cutler workout. "He threw the ball well. I think you saw a variety of things. He threw the ball on the run and under a little bit less than ideal conditions," Reese said. "He came today and performed, and I can't imagine too many quarterbacks performing better than he did today."

this is why the titans will be content with home town hero jay cutler. this is the qb that the titans will pick. i been saying this for the past month. get soembody at home. htis would be a perfect match for the titans.

I agree. I think that Cutler will make a very good QB and it makes too much sense to have the titans take him.

It sounds reasonable enough, but do you think Chow would choose Cutler over Leinart if he had a choice? I think the USC connection (Fisher, Chow) will play a factor in deciding which qb to take.

Before Culpepper, how good was Central Florida? How about after him? How was Miami of Ohio before Big Ben?

Exactly! Both schools had outstanding results while those two were in college which was part of my original dynamic of having a winning record their Sr. year in college. Both QB's were talented enough to raise their team to unprecedented records.

Central Florida was 9-2 Culpepper' senior season UCF's best season ever.

Everyone knows how Miami of Ohio did with Big Ben at QB his Sr. year just the one loss I believe to Iowa. I also believe one of if not the best season ever at Miami of Ohio.

Vandy was 2-9 and 5-6 Cutler's last two years. Of course 5-6 at Vanderbilt might be the equivelent of 9-2 somewhere else. But I still haven't found a QB from one of the doormat schools who didn't win in college but did in the NFL. But I'm only part way into the research.

With DG's thoughts on QB's I cannot see him taking a QB with the first pick even if all three are avaliable. I think maybe in round 2 he might take a shot at Whitehearst. I was on the White bandwagon but with the signing of Edge am now on the Davis wagon. With our OC I think he would like a Gonzales type to throw into the mix.

All right then...as with everybody that clamors against taking a QB...what will you say the next time we have this debate, after a QB we've passed on has proven you wrong...I suspect it will be the same argument.

first of all it is not up to the coaches to pick the players. we found that out last season when jeff fisher wanted antrell rolle and the gm wanted pac man jones. the titans chose jones. i don't think the titans organzation going give up draft choices just to get lienart when they are content with cutler. cutler will be there at 3. you never know how the draft will turn out. right now there is a lot of bluffing going on. if you want this player then this is what you have to do to get him.

All this shows me is that the Cardinals are in position to get a good player at 10.

If its a QB great, if it isnt it will still improve this team. Davis would be solid.

Also trading down 3-5 spots, taking Winston Justice, and adding more picks would help alot also...

We just signed Warner for three years. I do not think we will draft a QB at 10 and let him sit on the bench for two years when Denny needs a player that will provide imediate impact. I want Davis at 10 to make this an offense that will be very hard to stop.

Warners contract was structured so that they could cut him after any of the years, and still save money against the cap. Hell, if they decided to cut him later this offseason, the Cards would still save money (1 million) against the cap (3 mil bonus-4 mil salary)

in the 07 offseason, they'd save 2 mil against the cap.

Warners deal doesnt preclude them from picking anybody

Before we signed James I thought that we were not in a position to take a QB in the first round because of our needs at the running back position. Now that we have a running back, our other needs really do not fit in the first round. We need a DT but would have to trade down to justify taking one. We need offensive linemen but none will be available at 10 that would make an immediate impact and it is the deepest position in the draft. We could take 2 in rounds 2-4 and get quality depth this year and eventual starters for the future. Tight end is also a deep position in this draft and not necessarily a need for our offense. Safety is the one position that I could argue that we should grab in the first round because of lack of talent later on. I haven't watched Michael Huff to know much about him, but free safety can be upgraded in other ways. So, that leaves QB. Honestly, I think that this is the perfect year for us to take one in the first round because none of our immediate needs, other than free safety, fits in round 1. I like Young the least of the three as I think he is too much of a project and I believe that Cutler will make Jake-esque mistakes at times though he ha all-pro talent. Leinart is the easy choice but also has the least physical ability of the three. The reason I like Leinart is the same reason I liked Warner as a starter rather than McCown. Leinart in my opinion sees the field better than the other two and will maximize our WR's output, no wide open receivers unseen. Now, if we were to take a flier on Joey Harrington, we would be in great position to take Vernon Davis or Michael Huff, or even trade down, but as of now we need to establish the Qb position for the future years.

Only Trent Green meets the criteria. That makes two. Green and Eli Manning.

I didn't know that Green did so little passing in college. Only threw for 7 TD's his senior season. Hasn't done too poorly for an 8th round pick. The Anti-Tim Couch.

If we want Justice we would need to stay in front of the Eagles pick. I read in one of my draft guides they have eyes for him. Of course this could be smoke
