Quick question:

If all these one year deals leave next year, are we eligible for compensatory picks? I think the answer is no...

Depends on:

1) If they sign somewhere else.
2) If they sign, for how much.
3) How they perform in the season after they sign elsewhere
4) How many unrestricted free agents we sign that same offseason

Let's just remind ourselves right now that the Cards aren't at all likely to get a compensatory pick in 2014. We signed a bunch of UFAs (of which Dansby was not one), and IIRC only Greg Toler and LSH were signed from our pool.

If we let a number of these UFAs leave and don't sign as many, or as many to similarly rich contracts, we could be in line for compensatory picks in the 2015 draft.

so I presume cut players don't count? I don't fully understand that whole process

Welcome back 'Los. I really hope this one year signing turns into something far more permanent. I would love to see you retire in Cardinal's Red. The old regime really blew it when they let you and Quan get away. The fact that they did it without fanfare was deplorable.

Amen fish :notworthy:

Bringing Dansby into the fold is pretty much the perfect signing for this time of the year. Not only is he a solid player who fills a need, his return also helps remind our frustrated fanbase of the days before Max Hall and Ryan Lindley scarred us deeply. Not to mention his leadership skills, which will be needed now that A-Dub isn't around.

Excellent move, Steve and Mike. And welcome back, 'Los!

To be even in the Comp Pick formula(salary, performance, ect...) you have to pass one test first. Did you loss more qualifying free agents then you gained? If the answer is yes then you apply for the comp pick process.

The basic rule to be considered a "qualifying free agent" the player has to have entered the free agent market due to an expired contract, not a release. So as an example Adrian Wilson would not count as a player lost this year for us and he would not count as a player gained for the Patriots. You also have to of lost or gained a player during a certain time frame, the start of free agency is the start date and I am not sure what the cut off date is. So for example if the cut off date is May 10th and we signed a player who would normally qualify on May 11th they wouldn't count as a player gained or lost.

gotcha. Thanks man. So the large majority of players we lost (Skelton, Kolb, AW, Rhodes, Snyder, Wells) don't count. Were Gay and Sanders expired contracts? Either way, it sure looks like we're not gonna be getting any comp picks

It's magic. The Cardinals need a linebacker and whala, Karlos Dansby. :)

It's so nice to have a GM that gets things done.

William Gay was cut so he doesn't count. Sanders contract expired.

Acho dansby washington okafor??? apparently some analysts think Dansby can play OLB as well. At worst, it's an option worth checking out
Minter bench? Dansby is getting old and Minter has been viewed as a 2-down back by many. Maybe rotate em to keep Dansby fresh and aggressive while really playing Minter to his strengths?
Brinkley luxury box? insurance and special teams?
Raggie walker has a long way to make the team another for special teams? Give him a shot at OLB in camp?
With bowles olb has to cover in the same way horton pretend?
Cause okafor wont be able to cover tigh end why not? He's got the size. And is touted as being very athletic
my thoughts...
Geez MB looks like he just woke up from an all night bender.

Good move by the Cards. At the least we got insurance for DWash and at best have 12 games of a dynamic duo on the inside.
not to mention solid vet presence for Minter to learn from. I like it

Yeah, that is the beauty of it. This management is actually starting to play chess.

There is no way we are going to get comp picks next year, but 2015 is looking good. The one year deal accomplish a couple things. You can re-sign your own player without it counting against you. If a player plays well goes to another team even for 1 year and has good playing time like William Gay you can get return. Good grief, Pitt got a 6th round pick for us renting a player for a year.

I think Cason and Dansby have an excellent change to bring us future picks providing this past draft and next year's draft produce players who can step up in 1-2 years.

They should have never let Dansby leave in the first place. A real GM sees that and brings him back.

I don't even know what that looks like. Fanfare for a departing FA player? Do have any examples of this happening in the NFL?

Thrilled with getting LOS back and how this new regime is getting things done. I would think Mitch is not as happy as most as he thought/thinks LOS plays like he is wearing a Tuxedo.

Did we see contract numbers yet?

LOS and DWash will get plenty of snaps on the field together which gives us two LB's who can provide great pass defense and also rush the passer.

I think the Colts were pretty classy in the way they handled Dwight Freeney not really being welcome back.
