At first glance, that just sounds like a bargain. His agent could not do better than that?

$20 Million over 6 years with $12.5 million in bonus money?? Does seem low... No doubt come 2015, he'll be looking for a re-do....

Excellent, excellent contract. Couldn't be happier with this deal.

You know who's not happy about this deal? Navarro Bowman.

James Laurinitis got a five-year extension for $42.2 million with $23 million guaranteed.

Again, great job Graves, and good work by Washington and his agent to get a deal done.

Yeah, these are very good numbers --

Question for our cap guru (joeshmo) -- what's the logic behind the 2.5M bonus now and the 10M option bonus next year. Why not give him the 10M now and take some of that cap hit this year? Seems like we had the available cap room to do so.

Just a minor detail -- overall, the deal looks very good for us (and I'm sure he's not complaining about his money).

Just for clarification, according to how I am reading it, the $20 million over 6 years is his salary and there are $12.5 million in bonuses (separate from annual salary). So, the total deal appears to be 6 years, $32.5 million. (not saying that isn't what you meant 82, just wanted to make sure it was clear)

Still seems like a bargain compared to what other young LBs have gotten, as K9 alluded to.

Thanks for more accurately stating what I meant to say!

Wow, this is a good deal. DWash gets a nice pay raise and it fits into our CAP nicely.

Leaves room to extend Hyphen as well.

After the deal we will have about 3.5 mill in cap space left. Really not that much to work with to front load more of his contract. Especially if you consider that the Cards may want some more wiggle room for this years cap space to extend one or more other players and the usual injured player buffer.

Yeah that was probably key to getting it done. He was only due 490K this season and 590K next. Now he's getting 2.5M salary and 2.5M bonus along with a 10M roster bonus due next yr. Good contract for him and the team.

Looks like 32.5M total with just under a 5.5M cap hit per.

That's true -- guess I just wasn't thinking about it hard enough -- if his current year salary raised by $2M and some/all of that $2.5M bonus counts this season, that is a good chunk of the remaining cap space. Thanks!!

Joeshmo,

How do player incentives affect the current years cap? IE, AW took a pay-cut, but added on some incentive bonuses. If he hits them, do they count against this years cap or next years.

I see to recall that they can be used against any remaining cap from the current season, and any residual amount goes against next years cap.

Thanks for the clarification.

Go Cards!!!

That is the benefit of negotiating BEFORE you have to. You have a player securing his future today. Let's not forget, the team goes out on the bit of a limb should a player's career ends abrubtly.

It's a smart calculated move for both parties.

Love the deal! Washington deserves it but it is still cap friendly for the Cards. Doesn't seem like there was any junk money in that contract. Nice job Graves!

Now I would love to see them sign Lenon for 2 more years. He is the leader of the defense and the locker room and has shown he still has gas in the tank.

Agreed

Great, proactive move by the FO. This contract will look like an even bigger bargain when D-Wash turns into a superstar by the end of the year.

I thought it didn't matter with bonuses against cap. Since they are distributed evenly throughout the duration of the contract

I'm not a cap guru or anything (joeshmo seems to know a lot more than me), but I think the original signing bonus is evenly distributed but not necessarily subsequent bonuses. Kolb's original $10M bonus was spread evenly, but not the $7M roster bonus (which was originally to all count against this year's cap - but ended up getting spread out, but not evenly, over the duration of the contract. All semantics though at this point - as this seems to be a universally applauded move!

true. And ABSOLUTELY a great move. That kid is a great player and fits in with the stand-up character of the rest of the players. VERY cool dude, he will only positively impact this squad

Saving room for PP's inevitable ball buster.

You know regardless of how well he plays between now and his contract coming up, he'll be looking for Nnamdi Money. Really itll be due to reputation more than anything.

Hoping Adrian rubs off on him and he doesnt turn into Primetime personality wise.

Not to mention we need to start saving up for the eventual reloading of this Oline. Top to bottom. Maybe keep Lyle. But we're gonna have to Paaaaaay for some guys.

Peterson can't be extended until his 4th season, so we've got some time on that. I think that the salary market is going to correct some over that time, and I'd expect that we'd have no problem paying top corner money if that's what Peterson becomes.

Also, if we draft a quarterback and release Kolb in the next two years, then that first QB contract is going to be equivalent to what Daryl Washington gets in salary alone. By the time that the Quarterback comes up for extension, who knows who'll be here, who'll be gone, and who will be willing to take a pay cut.

I think you're going to be disappointed if you think we're going to dip into free agency for help on the offensive line. I think that every player on the starting line has a contract extending three years or more, for money that makes cutting them difficult. We have depth in Potter and Kelemete. Don't expect starting help at the OL in the next draft, and maybe two.

I'm high on Kelemete. I think this kid can be a force at Guard in a few years.

ehh pull it back a little. A "Force" is to say hes gonna be the next Hutch.

Solid. Darn good. Longtime starter. Thats enough and Id be happy for it.

I'm also excited for the young guys on the line. I think Kelemete and Massie will start next year. We just re-did Levi's contract, so I expect he will as well. Then probably Sendlein and Colledge. Hopefully Potter improves as well. The line has the potential to be legit in a year. Good or great is a little too kind, but they should no longer be the embarrassment that they've been for the last millennium
