My guess is Yankey would be a round 2 or trade down option, not the 20th player selected.

Same. There is going to be a fierce run on d-linemen, TEs and WRs in picks 20-32. Maybe with a QB or 2 getting some interest from teams trading up. Because the draft is so deep in o-linemen, teams will wait and address other needs earlier.

Chops---have you taken a good look at T/G Joel Bitonio (6-4, 314, Nevada)?

I've been watching some tape of him and been very impressed. Plays with a good, strong base. Shows good, sudden hand punches at LT, recovers and counters well. Balanced and competitive. I think he is Round 2 worthy.

I doubt he'd be in any top 50 Mitch. So that, mtl rules him out for us.

I was thinking 3rd or 4th round for Bitonio, actually. I think he is 2nd round worthy, but because of the depth of o-linemen in this draft, I think some real good ones, like Bitonio will be available in rounds 3-5.

Mayock thinks that some starting tackles will go in the 2nd and 3rd Rds. Morgan Moses, Jack Mewhort and the NC kid are the three that have been most bantered around here. After that there are some good projects, Bobbie Massie types.

(Cyrus) Kouandjio from Alabama; I think he's going to be a guy that can go somewhere between 20 to 30. If you're not going to jump on a tackle in the first round, you can get one into the second round, even later into the second round.

"Morgan Moses, Brandon Thomas from Clemson, they would probably go late second round. There's a guy named Joel Bitonio from Nevada that most of the fans out there never heard of; he's going to be a second- or third-round tackle that starts immediately. Jack Mewhort from Ohio State -- second- or third-round starting tackle.

"My point is, I think at 20, sometimes you've got to identify the best player that's there, as opposed to just what your need is, and I think whether they get the tackle at 20 or in the second or third round, they can get a good one

I'd be surprised if we waited past the 3rd Rd. to address the OL somewhere along the draft.

How confident are you about Watford??

We really don't know much about Watford. The coaches have said he will be in the mix at RG---so that's a start, at least. I think they see him as a depth player who is not ready to start.

Joel Bitonio and Brandon Thomas are both guys who I like, but we would probably have to use our second round pick to get them. Neither has the classic height that you look for in an OT, but both have long arms and move very well. It is one reason I like the combine, as I got to see how easily these two moved which makes me believe they might be able to stick at a RT spot rather than immediately moving them inside. I could probably argue moving them both ahead of Yankey because of how much better they looked moving at the combine which speaks to a higher probability of succeeding at OT but I am not yet.

It depends on how free agency shakes out, though I would be pretty comfortable with drafting Bitonio, Thomas, Mewhort and MOses to fill a OT spot.

Me too. You can get a starting OT in the 2nd Rd. Possibly a LT down the line.

Some are saying Bitonio has worked his way to the top of the 2nd already.

Kouandjio's medical has left a spot open after Lewan that needs to be filled and Bitonio could be that guy no doubt.

LT vs RT has become tougher to differentiate in the NFL anymore. So many teams run 2TE or 0TE sets which either gives both players help or neither player help, which is why LT was prioritized over RT in the first place. If anyone knows a resource that tracks personnel groupings, that would be the best way to guess how our staff views each spot. The amount of time the LT is on an island compared to the RT should correlate with the team's view and how much more LT is than RT.

Yes, and D coordinators are good at creating mis-matches on either side of the line now. Both sides regularly face opposing pass rush specialists, so have to be equally adept at Pass pro now. It's just traditionally that the RT is more of the road grader as well. To get one (RT) real good at both means spending a premium pick nowadays usually. Since we have Sowell and Massie, an upgrade would mtl need to be made early or sign another vet.
