Is it too much to hope there's a three way tie for the second wildcard slot? (Assuming that the Diamondbacks are in the first wild card slot which seems to be the most likely scenario)
If that were to happen there would be a mini playoffs sort of thing. Team A would host team B in the first game and the winner of that would host team C for the final playoff spot.
The team with the best record against the two other two gets to choose which slot they want. Basically choosing if they want to try to win two games at home or one on the road. The team with the second best record chooses next and the third gets what's left.
I'm all for it, but wouldn't tie-breakers prevent this?

Here's some cool stats regarding the Indians and Dbacks' streaks.
https://www.si.com/mlb/2017/09/08/cleveland-indians-winning-streak

Overall, the streaks/records the Dbacks have had during their streak have been fun to watch. I mean almost 11 straight games with the lead! Who even heard of that record until this?

Nope, baseball doesn't use tiebreakers for that. They will usually have a 163rd regular season game between the two teams. If its three teams tied then they will use the scenario I posted above.

The Dodgers are doing their best to give us the division. Not gonna happen, though, unfortunately.

If our middle inning relievers don't start doing their job, we could lose the home field advantage in the 1-game 1st round. Worse, we could miss the playoffs completely.

They are a nondescript bunch of mediocrity.

Magic Number is now 9

Arizona holds tie breaker over both MIL and Colorado, so only need to finish with same record as either

Still don't understand the Magic Number. Is that number mean they need to win atleast 9 more games to make the playoffs, no matter the order?

Number of wins the team leading needs added to the number of losses the closest trailing team can accumulate.

So for magic number of 9, 5 wins by leading team X and 4 losses by trailing team Y would add to 9 and clinch playoff spot.

That series split for us was huge, and technically a win for us. By splitting the series we reduced our magic number for Colorado by 4 games basically strangling the last hopes they had out of them. With only 16 games left to play, and being 5 games back we have a commanding lead on our spot. The magic number to clinch a WC spot is now 9!

Rockies 5 GB (11)
--------------------------------- WC Cutoff

Elimination From D'Backs Spots (Magic Number)
Brewers 7.5 GB. (9)
Cardinas 7.5 GB. (9)
Marlins eliminated from D'Backs spot today

14 games to go, thank you Dude. At this point we are going to the playoffs, it's really just a formality. The lead for the final WC spot is so far out of reach in reality. Even if we went 7-7, the Brewers would have to go 15-0 in their final 15.

MLB only uses the season series as a tie breaker if the two teams are both the wildcard teams and the tiebreaker would determine home field. If two teams are tied for the final wildcard slot then there will be a "regular season" one game playoff. If three teams are tied for one spot, then they have a mini playoffs with the three teams. That's why it would be ideal for the D'backs to get the first spot and let St Louis, Milwaukee and Colorado tie for the last one. The team that faces Arizona could be on their third starter for that one game wildcard series.

Colorado plays tonight, Dbacks don't. If Col loses tonight the magic number would drop 4 as they would then be 6 games behind. After tonight, the dbacks and rockies will have the same number of games left, 8

Dbacks have 3 games vs the Marlins at home, 3 vs SF at home and 2 @ KC to end the season.

Rockies after tonight will have 3 more against @ SD, then Marlins for 3 at home and finally 2 at home vs the Dodgers.

I like the Dbacks schedule over the Rockies.

Dodgers clinched the Div and best record in baseball. They could coast and rest player and set their rotation for their first game.

I think you're both wrong. We have 9 games to play. Even if Colorado wins they're down 5 with 9 to go. That puts our number at 4. If we tie with them we win the tiebreaker. If they lose it goes down to 3 we would be up 6 with 9 to go. We play Kansas City 3 times not 2.

??????????????????

Tiebreakers only come into play when both teams are tied for the two playoff spots. Because that isn't a given yet, it puts the number at 5 against the Rockies. If San Diego holds on against the Rockies tonight, it drops to 4.
The number for the playoffs is now 3 with the Brewers loss to the Cubs tonight.

Well Ok but it's the Brewers or Colorado. We have the tie breaker over both.

At this point it is still possible for the Brewers to get the number 1 slot and the Rockies and the D'backs to tie for the second. If they tie then tiebreakers will only determine who gets home field in the tie breaker game. The winner of that game would then go to Milwaukee for the 1 game wildcard series and the loser doesn't make the post season. Tiebreakers don't get you in the playoffs.
