Sorry Wally, don't let the door hit your Backman on the way out. Hire Grace to take the sting of the Backman fiasco.

I was told a few days ago they planned to announce their new coaching staff this morning, so it may just be that.

If it is bye-bye Backman, I sure hope they don't think canning him lets the organization off the hook for its sheer incompetence. And it won't be Grace - if not Backman, I suspect it'll be Manny Acta.

If they did can Backman for Grace, i might just puke myself. That would just be a bonehead move. I havnt been so sure what to think of this whole fiasco, but i honestly dont see how he can win the players respect with this much burden on his back. So if he does get to keep the job, he better be damn good at it, because that is the only thing that will save him.

Radio reports Bob Melvin.

I wonder how he feels now knowing he was the second choice.
Perhaps it will help him that Backman only lasted four days. The choice to go with Backman looks so wrong that maybe that makes Melvin the first choice.

That made no sense, I fear.

This is embarassing.

How can you not check out a candidate's background. Even a supposedly "poorly run" organization like the Cardinals manage to get this right.

The worst part to me is that it becomes an issue afterward. If it is an issue then check it before hand. If it is not an issue then stick by the guy you hired. :?

I completelly support this decission. Cut our ties with him now as we are already embarresed.
I agree, if this team is going to continue their "zero tolerance" approach to players with legal issues, it has to start at the management level. Some where Bobby Chounard feels vindicated

Backman fired by D-Backs

Wally Backman has been fired as manager of the Diamondbacks, just days after he was named to the post, because of a series of off-the-field incidents that proved too much for the organization to stomach.

The Diamondbacks called an 11 a.m. news conference to announce the decision.

Reached Friday morning, Backman said he was very disappointed.

“I’m stunned, so is my family, so is everybody. “I’m not prepared to say anything today but I will definitely have a statement (soon).”

The UofA did not do it with Mackovic and look what happened. Next to go, Joe G. Jr.

As I said on another thread - 2-3 alcohol-related screw-ups in a middle-aged man, who reportedly denies that they were alcohol-related (despite police documentation), and who continues to party (per his Jethawks players) is a man who still has a serious problem. I don't blame him for not saying anything to them, because the man is in denial!! He truly doesn't see the problem! Which is the whole problem.

Too bad we won't be able to keep him in the minor leagues on condition of sobriety or something, because he seems to be a skilled manager. And there HAS to be some serious re-organization at the top of this franchise, because this was handled terribly, from the initial non-screening (last Spring when he was hired to manage Lancaster) to the awkward, embarrassing, painful back-pedalling.

Firing Backman is fine, but dont hire Melvin, he is going to have less talent here than he did in Seattle and he didnt do anything with what they had there...

Well, see, they KNOW Melvin...so they don't need to do a background check.
:biglaugh:

They no doubt did NOT do one on Acta, either, and don't have time to do one now, so they are picking what they believe is squeaky-clean and safe, rather than leave things even more rudderless going into the FA period.

ROYAL PHUQUE-UP!

this is a double edged sword here, and either way you put it, the D-backs are an embarrasment right here.

we either stick to our guns and keep the guy, and be known as the team with the drunk wife abusing manager in charge of bunch of "baby-backs". and the team that doesnt know how to go through the steps of hiring someone.

or we are known as the team who bailed themselves out by firing the guy. by no means does this cleanse the pallet, and it could be seen as even worse than keeping him.

sometimes i wonder who's running this team. i mean, i'm picturing a bunch of clowns.

Colangelo must be laughing his ass off at sold out Suns games watching this debacle. I doubt he ever looked in the mirror and realized part of the chaos this organization lies in is his fault but I'm digressing.

This is bad. Tell me why would Johnson, Sexson, and any good player for that matter would want to come back to this bumbling organization? How this team ever won a World Series under this front office boggles the mind.
