McCarthy's resume was dubious before he got here. He has never been able to eat innings, last season's 135 innings was the 2nd MOST he'd ever thrown in a season. In Oakland's pitcher friendly turf he pitched okay (on the rare times he was healthy), but when playing in Texas's not so pitcher friendly park he stunk.
Outside of a career year in 2010 Cahill has always been an iffy starter, who had spotty control and a really scary WHIP. He also has seemed to get fatter every year. But even so, they really needed to be more patient with him. Yanking him from the rotation this fast was stupid. Its not like they have any viable replacements, and last year he started out like crap but slowly pieced it together, they have to let him work things out or let him totally fall apart. Yanking him for equally incompetent starters was stupid.
Both he and McCarthy were brought in because of Towers stupid infatuation with sinkerball pitchers.
An infatuation he made a complete reversal on when he signed aging home run machine Bronson Arroyo. I haaaaaated his signing. The guy is an awful fit for our stadium, reading about his constant decline in velocity over the last few years was an ominous sign. Arroyo was medicore in his good seasons and terrible in his bad ones.
Miley has looked like Miley usually does, unless the pressure of being the "ace" of this joke of a rotation ends up breaking him, I think he will end up with an ERA in the low 4s.
Collmenter looked fine as a reliever, he is not a starter and should not have been put into the rotation.
And its worth mentioning that KT fired last seasons's pitching coach, despite Miley and Corbin crushing expectations and the rest of the staff doing about as well as could be expected with their low talent levels. The alleged reason Towers fired Nagy? He didnt order our pitchers to bean enough batters.
I will not mourn Gibby's departure but this is not his fault. Kevin Towers absolutely destroyed the depth our organization had in pitching talent, he swapped out young guys for older, expensive guys who had, at best, established themselves as back end starters.
This rotation would look a hell of a lot better lot better and about 20 million cheaper with Skaggs and Kennedy in it but both players were shipped off because our GM is to freaking stupid and impatient to let players work through struggles. Hell, even Holmberg (who 82cards laughed at me for being annoyed that we gave him away for literally nothing) would provide more hope than this disaster. He is 22 and had a 2.75 ERA in AA last year.
Maybe firing Charles Nagy again would fix things. Or maybe they still are not hitting enough batters.
Or maybe.. just maybe, Kevin Towers is an idiot.
