Tracy on a 0-2 pitch crushes it for a 3-run homer. Diamondbacks up 7-6.

Papa Grande just blew another save. He threw a 0-2 pitch right over the plate. Not looking good.

Diamondbacks should be 4-0 on this trip. Mets win 8-7.

Time to try something else. This guy has been inconsistent for the last 2 years. He is not a big league closer.

Valverde sucks period, his ERA proves it. As far as im concerned any pro athlete who gets paid big money and does not look like he puts much work in the weight room is an lazy fat ass. GM's need to start putting clauses in contracts requiring weight restrictions. That way after someone like Ortiz signs a contract gets fat both in the bank and @ the dinner table, the team can say you suck and your fat ass weight voids your contract. Gauranteed contracts have destroyed sports.

Valverde is struggling that's for sure but to point to his ERA as proof of his "suckiness" is just plain dumb. Closers tend to have inflated ERA's because when you only pitch one inning at a time, if you have a bad outing it sticks with you. True the best tend to have low ERA's...but I'd look at losses and blown saves as more of an indicator for a closer's effectiveness over ERA.

What if you're fat but still play great?

Maybe they should give Valverde a rest and put Julio in the closer's spot for a few games.

This depends on the guy.
Some closers don't pitch at their best unless its a one run game. You bring em in with a 4 run lead and they always give up a run or 2. Valverde may not suck because of his ERA but he still sucks.

I said "if you suck" and are fat they can void the contract. Ortiz as a prime example. There are always exceptions, but if you produce no one will complain. No contracts should be guaranteed.

Chances are the team will be so deflated over him blowing the last 2 games that ther won't be a save chance for a few games anyway.

I don't think you could write a clause into a contract that reads if you are fat AND you suck. You could probably create a weight clause but there is no way you could legally tie the 2 together or selectively enforce the weight clause depending on performance.

 I would love to see this rationalized in an arbitration hearing

Haha... 2 blown saves and all of a sudden you suck and are fat. Relievers go through rough stretches all the time, its just been tougher for the team lately because both Lyon and Valverde have had their rough stretches at the exact same time.

Valverde has been an accident waiting to happen for the last 2 years.
