I picked this up last night, popped it in, and started running the updates. Man, there are some monstrously sized downloads just to play. :(

I went to bed, with the updates running. I got up this morning, and thought I would make a character real quick before I started getting ready for work.

DENIED!

The servers were down! :madarms:

Gotta love launch week! :D

I just got this today and it's pretty cool. Yes it took forever for the downloads but when you start, it was pretty cool. The drawback so far is that I'm stuck on my first mission.

Stuck how?

I have t00ns on Justice (PvE) and The Killing Joke (PvP) servers. I may be able to lend a hand.

By the way, this game really blew me away...once I was able to login and actaully play. I was working up a write up for it, but figured that there was zero interest from others.

Well, I'm on Redemption and am on my first quest which is to stop the spread of Scarecrow gas. I destroyed the dispensers, now it's telling me to defeat the Screamers, which I was doing for over an hour. When does that end?

None of the wiki sources have missions up on them yet, and I didn't find anything to help on the game forums. I'll start a tech hero tonight (so I can draw Batman quests) and see what's up.

Usually, it's not that you haven't killed enough of "x" to finsih a mission, it's that you didn't do it in the right spot to get credit for it. I ran into the same "location" problem with the Gorilla Grodd stuff in the beginning of the Superman lvl 1-5 missions.

edit: Oh yeah, check your mission journal in your PDA. You may have finished it already, and you just need to click on the "Complete" tab. I ran into that too.

Thanks, I figured it out. There was more to the mission. Of course now I keep getting killed by Scarecrows men in the sewer.

I have played City of Heroes on the PC. How does it compare to them?

The quick answer is: "It's tons better, and more engaging!"

The long answer: edit: Just read this.

As far as MMO's go, DCUO is a bit more of a "hybrid" of sorts. It incorporates a more twitch based combat system than you'd be used to with City of heroes/Villains, and there are no default attacks. What makes this work, for me at least, is that if I'm engaged in PvP with an opponent a few levels above me it's not a done deal just based upon XP level. If the guy is clueless, I can own him.

The one frustrating thing about combat is the targeting system. Instead of giving you a targeting reticle (like a first person shooter) or allowing you to select a target (like a traditional MMO), it's auto targets based upon proximity and the direction your character is facing. You will find, from time to time, that when you're involved in combat with a thick mob of NPC's that you'll suddenly targeting a car, or a crate, in the "destructible environment" or some dude two blocks away. You get used to it though, and it's easy enough to retarget someone else.

Your character creation options are rather limited, especailly compared to CoH/V, but there's still plenty of options. And the cool thing is that there are more costume pieces available as in-game loot than you have during the initial creation. So you can always pick up more gear. If you don't want to spend an hour making your character, you can select from a list of DC characters (Batman, Superman, et al.) and just roll with a similar look and powerset.

Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, one more thing...

The in-game chat function suck bawls...especially if you are used to PC MMO's. Even if you are using a USB keyboard, or the bluetooth controller keyboard, it still pulls up the on-screen keyboard which blocks the entire screen.

I haven't tried the VoIP yet, but I've heard it's still spotty at best.

Here's what I've found so far. I'm not much for PvP mostly because you have people who are level 15 or higher targeting my poor level 6 guy. Trying to complete a mission and getting killed every 5 minutes because some A-hole wants to get his jollies is not my idea of fun. So, I'm not going PvP on my new character. Other than that, it's a pretty cool game. I might do the PVP at some point but not right now.

If there's one neater aspects of a PvP server is that there will typically be a group of higher level t00ns patrolling the newbie areas looking for a would-be gank squad to show up just for the action.

However, if you're just out there without any back-up it does suck.

Big fan off MMO's, might have to check this out.

I wish they had a trial offer or something. If you picked this up for $60 based upon my recommendation, I'd feel bad. :(

Anywhoo...

After a week of new characters, rerolls, and reading a lot of player-created online materials, I think I've finally hit my stride with a couple of characters I can stick with.

Look me up when you have a chance, we may be able to roll together on Redemption server.

Civil Defense-Hero (Ice/Brawler)
Kruel Kaiser-Villian (Sorcery/Hand Blast)

I'll look for you. If I'm not on redemption, I'll create a character on there. I have a hero on Justice, Silver Vengeance(2 gunner) and a villain, forget the world named Bad News. Also a 2 gunner. I think I'm going to create a rifle character. Question though. I'm having a lot of trouble getting into the arenas, legends, and now having problems with the Oolong alert. The quests are fun and all but I like the alerts and want to try the arena but I never seem to get in.

Man I am so getting a ps3 very very soon for this game sounds sweet :), although the part about high lvl players killing newbies before they complete missions sounds horrible for the newbie and would deftintaly get on someone's nerves lol.

That's only on PvP (player-vs-player) servers, not on PvE servers.

When you choose a server to create your characters on, you'll see how that server is setup.

I'm having loads of problems getting into the arenas and in legends, I always get partnered up with idiots. It's frustrating.

As bad-azz as I look, I'm stuck on a quest where I keep getting my ass handed to me by Robin, Cyborg, and the rest of the Titans!

It's pretty humbling getting whooped by a bunch of teenagers.
Less cool.
Replace your bird feathers with razor-tipped ones.
Seems to have worked for an avian I know.
Although he whined incessantly about it for years after.

I'll give that a shot.

I wanted to go the Aquaman route...but I got tired of beating up Japanese whalers, and having guys from Toronto hit on me.
