Green coming in to interview for Raiders job
David White - San Francisco Chronicle

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Former Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green is scheduled to arrive today in Alameda to interview for the Oakland Raiders' head-coaching job, a source close to the search said Monday.

Green hopes to replace Art Shell, who was fired Jan. 4.

He coached the Minnesota Vikings from 1992-2001 and was hired by the Cardinals in 2004. Green was fired after Arizona went 5-11 this season.

In Minnesota, Green worked with Raiders wide receiver Randy Moss -- who reiterated his desire to be traded in a weekend interview at a college all-star game.

The Raiders interviewed USC assistant head coach Steve Sarkisian, former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel and Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan for the position last week.

By interviewing Green, the Raiders would satisfy the Rooney Rule, an NFL policy that requires owners to interview at least one minority candidate for a head-coaching opening.

Is he just a token for the interview or does he really have a shot? It would be great to see him go to Oakland and further damage his career.

Al Davis liked Denny when he was HC of the Vikings. It was rumored that if Green wasn't to get an extension that Davis would hire him. That never happened as Red McCombs promoted Denny putting him in charge of the entire Viking football operations in 2000. (not sure of the exact year)

I would love to see the dynamic between DG and "crazy" Al. That would be comedy.

If DG gets the job in Oakland, best of luck to him. Even though he didn't have the skills to win with this team, he did leave us in much better shape than when he got here. I have no animosity towards him.

I think Denny is just doing Al a favor to meet the Rooney requirement. I really doubt this is a serious interview.

Probably not the SJ Mercury News is reporting the Raiders are also interviewing James Lofton. The Merc has NOT reported the Green rumor yet so Lofton would obviously satisfy the Rooney rule.

The Merc now says that Sarkisian, Rob Ryan, Jim Fassel and Lofton will have officially interviewed for the job, with Trestman having interviewed for the OC position as apparently has the incumbent Shoop.

Remember also, Green interviewed for the Raiders job the same year we hired him, many thought he'd get the job but he didn't because he wanted too much power and Davis wouldn't give it to him.

Maybe Davis was impressed with the job Denny did this year coaching the Cards against the Raiders?

That'd be great for the Bidwill's, and probably losen the purse strings a bit more, if the Raiders got the old man off the hook for DG's salary.

After Denny lost it with the Chicago press conference (We know what the Bears are) I rather doubt he is going to find a job in the NFL. I hear repeats of that tape almost weekly on various shows. Things like that will follow you for a lifetime. I still do not know what Denny was raving about.

Green as HC
Trestman as OC,

why not McGinnis as DC?

They can rename themselves the Oakland Northwest Cardinal Raiders

It's probably Trestman's job, since Shoop already left.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but did any of you hear the infamous Skip Bayless say that he didn't think that the Cards should have fired Denny in the first place?

Unreal.

That's my thought as well. But if he does get the job, good luck Denny. You'll need in in Oakland.

I wonder if Denny will try to trade with Detroit for Josh or with us for Navarre if he gets the raiders job?

Afterall he insisted Navarre will be as good as that other Michigan QB.

Are you kidding? This is just the kind of thing the draws Al Davis to someone. If he interviews, I expect him to land the job. He wants to prove the Cards failures were not his doing. If he can ressurrect the Raiders, then it means the Cards front office interfered too much.

Al hired Bugel post-Cardinals.

CS:

And with the Raiders, the head coach never has to worry about interference by ownership, right? ;)
