You don't know what other teams have really offered.

I don't need to considering there are only two teams in the running. We already know the absolute best package the Knicks could offer is Gallinari, Chandler, Felton, Fields, and a pick. I doubt both Chandler and Gallinari will be included because I don't think NY is keen on sending 4 young starters for Anthony and an aging Billups. From Denver's perspective, nobody in that deal has star potential.

I heard DEN is looking to move Murphy and his contract once they get him. They will also supposedly send away 1 or 2 of their 1st rd picks for him.

I'll be more than happy to take him here if we can get draft picks with him. He's also a good rebounder (prior to being traded to NJ) so he won't be that bad. Plus we get more picks.

Yeah, there has to be a lot more going on to this deal or it's just make believe. Actually, the Nets could safely make that offer because there isn't a chance in the world that Melo would agree to play long term for a team that has not only gutted it's present but given away it's future.

Steve
Unless they plan on making a run at Dwight Howard/Chris Paul in 2012.

Here's a trade I would do to bring Murphy/Harris here:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4dvgytq

We'd get at least a #1, but more likely we get 2. Carter, Murphy and Pietrus all expire this offseason (VC buyout), we get rid of Childress, and we get two picks. That's a great rebuilding position.

Harris-Carter-Dudley-Murphy-Gortat is how we finish the year and we have Harris-#1/FA-Dudley-#1/FA-Gortat going into next season.

NJN gets Nash-Morrow-Anthony-Humphries-Lopez with Hill as a 6th and they'd have a little bit of cap space this offseason.

DEN gets to keep Billups for Billups-Afflalo-Smith-Favors-Nene which really prevents a terrible falloff to go along with a couple picks and some major cap space this offseason allowing for a good rebuild as well.

Denver won't be including any first round picks with Murphy's expiring contract unless he is traded for pure cap relief to a team with a large trade exception like Cleveland or packaged with a bad contract they want to dump like Harrington.

Pietrus has a player option that he is 100% going to exercise, so you can't treat him as an expiring.

Not bad but almost every Nash trade is unrealistic at this point because the FO has already said they arent trading. Of course NOT trading him is the WRONG move but Sarver is an idiot so it makes sense to him.

Well it looks like Melo will eventually be a Knick. He supposedly told the Nets he would not sign an extension with them.

I don't think this makes them any better. Now if they add another superstar during the off season...

Glad its finally over with. From the sounds of things, the Nuggets are going to start trading off a lot of their roster including the pieces that they just got from the Knicks. Makes you wonder if we'll get involved with that directly or as a 3rd team.

We have what the Nuggets want now with a HUGE expiring deal and a couple of draft picks. Just saying...

I am not sure if it made sense for NY to make this deal now. Knowing that Anthony wanted to play for them and that he was not going to sign an extension with anyone else, why not just wait until the off-season, even if there is a lockout, and sign him when he becomes a FA. They wouldn't have had to give up anyone.

They'll miss Chandler and Gallinari and to a lesser extent Mozgov, but they managed to keep Fields. Billups is an upgrade over Felton, even if only temporary.

From Denver's perspective, they did pretty well considering they were going to lose Anthony anyway. Something the Suns were unable to do last year with Stoudemire. Then again, the Suns went to the WCF whereas Denver now should fall out of playoff contention, something that should help Phoenix in their pursuit of a playoff berth.

How about this?

Suns trade:

Vince Carter
Robin Lopez
2011 Orlando first round pick
$3M cash

Suns get:

Nene
J.R. Smith

Denver converts a $6M expiring contract into a $17M one, and only pays $1M to buyout Carter in the summer. They get a young big and a draft pick for their troubles.

Suns get a power forward who can immediately help, and can be extended for far less than Amare. This move also enables Phoenix to move both Gortat and Dudley into the starting lineup, where they probably should be already. Smith's contract will expire in the summer and in the meantime he can provide some much needed offense and three-point shooting off the bench. Frye would move back to the bench to back-up Gortat in a role similar to last season and be the first guy off the bench.

Can Denver realistically get more for Nene and Smith?

I don't understand how people think that this deal makes the Knicks a thin roster.

Billups-Fields-Anthony-Stoudemire-Turiaf

Carter-Brewer-Balkman-Williams

Azubuike-Mason-Williams-Walker-Douglas

I mean, they are a donut in the middle, but that's a deepish roster otherwise....

Evidently they're trying to keep him. I'm not sure he'd be a great fit here with Gortat already filling the center role and Nene's not a PF

More likely we'd be involved in a 3 team deal. For example, the Hawks are looking for a center and a pg and Denver just so happens to get those pieces in the Melo trade (Mozgov & Felton). Could we turn that to our favor with us get someone like Josh Smith?

We'd likely have to take Marvin Williams deal in return though who they are actively shopping for obvious reasons.

Just thinking out loud here

I don't know how realistic this but it is a way for us to get Josh Smith

http://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/5860640

Atlanta gets: Felton, Mozgov, JR Smith, Chris Andersen

Denver gets: Teague, Carter, Pietrus, Lopez/Dragic (their choice)

Phoenix gets: Josh Smith, Marvin Williams

Obviously we'd have to trade draft picks. Would anyone be up for this?

I see what you're trying to do, but if Dragic is their choice, would you be comfortable with Dowdell as the only backup to Steve Nash on the roster? I certainly wouldn't, considering backup PG is a problem even WITH Dragic here.

Not really but you have to give up something to get something. Lopez and Dragic are our only cheap assets so it would likely take one or the other to make a trade like this.

If I had my choice it would be Lopez unless there was another scenario in which we got another pg (ie Bibby).
