I've always wanted the Cards to take defense with their first pick. There were only a handful of offensive players who I would want the Cardinals to take in the 1st round if for some reason they were to fall:

Bortles, Robinson, Mathews, Lewan, Watkins

So I'm glad they went defense. I'm not a huge fan of taking a safety with a top 20 pick. So I'm very happy that they were able to land an extra 3rd rounder and move back a few spots. I don't love the pick as I think you can land a decent SS in the later rounds. However I do like the pick because I think Bucannon is the best SS in this class next to Pryor and I think he will see the field early in his career. That's exactly what you want with a 1st round pick.

Plus I think Bucannon fills a need and stocks an already formidable Defensive backfield. The idea of PP, HB, Cromartie, and Bucannon back there with Powers, Johnson, and Jefferson able to come in as well gets me excited about this defense.

Overall I think Kiem has shown he can pick the low hanging fruit in the first round of the draft (OG #8 overall last year and now a SS at #27 overall). These are typically positions that you can find quality players at later in the draft. I'm still waiting to see Keim land a stud pass rusher or a franchise QB in the draft. If he ever does, then I think he will truely be on his way to being one of the great GMs in the league. Until then he still has a lot to prove which I'm fine with at this point.

Manziel would not be a franchise QB. Hes a worse pick than Lienart for our team. Does not fit what our staff wants.

I think the problem is that with Manziel you really have no idea what you are getting and with were we are at as a team, we need safe picks that will help us make a SB run.

I would like to state I love the pick since it is not a public poll and do not wish to be counted among the people who will be doing the 'I will eat crow' routine to excuse their harsh words on Bucannon and get a free pass :D

I am the one voter on dislike. I will be right, just like Ryan Williams and Minter.

And Housler...and Rashard Johnson.

Agreed. I just pointed out in another thread that there has been 1 first round SS drafted in the last 20 years.

Well what you pointed out was wrong.

Based on their draft day position:

2013- Kenny Vaccaro
2012- Eric Berry
2007- LaRon Landry
2006- Michael Huff
2006- Donte Whitner
2002- Ed Reed- Played FS in NFL
2001- Adam Archuleta
1998- Donovan Darius

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?position=S&type=position

So 8 SSs have been drafted in the first round in the past 20 years. 7 played SS in the pros. I'm not sure if any of the FSs played SS, but the point is plenty of SSs have been drafted in the first round and most of them have had good careers.

With Honey Badger at FS in the base package, we needed a SS with size and hitting ability to fill out the back end. Bucannon fits that role better than any safety in the draft.

I like the pick.

Belichick was going to take him a couple picks later according to Jason La Canfora. If they didn't take him there, they wouldn't have gotten him. All four of the starter quality safeties were gone by the Niners pick at #30. In a very thin safety class, the Cardinals did well to get their guy and still get the extra 3rd.

Once Calvin Pryor, Ryan Shazier and Anthony Barr were off the board, they got the guy who helps the most in 2014 on both defense and special teams IMO.

Wow... I didn't know that Williams, Minter, Housler and Johnson were 1st round picks?
I also didn't know that they trumped their fellow position mates in all measureables at the combine?

Hey dude - maybe you're onto something after all... same 'ol Cards. Fire Keim now!! :mulli:

I was mostly relieved it wasnt Carr.

I haaaaaated that we traded out of #20, and especially after seeing other teams get more from trading less. But once we came up again at 27 Buchanon was one of the guys I was okay with us taking.

They were all reaches.

I don't want to fire Keim but he shouldn't be immune to criticism.

I don't have the time... but, do you really believe the Cards are the only team over the past 5-7 years that have "reached" on a few players?
Not sure why/how you can qualify Minter as a "reach"? Johnson in the 3rd round was a "reach"??

Keim isn't perfect... who is? But it's really hard to find much fault with his moves since he's taken over the reigns from Graves.

It isn't an absolute. It isn't "all great" or "all bad"

I consider Keim a good GM. He just made 2 mistakes in my opinion.

You guys are in such a rush to counter anything remotely negative it is surprising.

If we don't feel that the trade was a negative, then what? we are discussing it - you are giving your point, others are giving theirs.

IMHO, too much emphasis is placed on the value chart. I am not smart enough to know how well Deone will do in the NFL, but I like what I see/read.

So what would GM Sanders have done?

How does Minter make this list of failures?

I guess I can understand some of the guys on this list. Williams is a chicken to even get on the field. Housler is definitely underperforming. But minter and Johnson I don't understand. Johnson is a solid player. And Minter has one year in the nfl that unfortunately was an injury year. No way to gauge him yet..

GM Sanders would have let the clock expire waiting for a trade of correct value to come in. That way he wouldn't gotten taken, and wouldn't have a pick for others to nit pick him for. :D
