The problem
coyoteshockeyfan said:Wow, hindsight really is 20-20, isnt it?
People seem to forget that
A) We had a pile of 1B guys at the time
B) Durazo was (possibly understandably) unhappy here
C) We needed a starting pitcher
D) Dessens had one of the best ERAs in the league the year before we traded for him.
Was it a bad trade at the time? Maybe. I thought we could have gotten more for him. I know he hasnt been perfect like all of the other GMs in the league, but Joe doesnt have the benefit of seeing how a trade is going to turn out 2 years later before he makes it.
Edit: oh, and another outfielder prospect? Im glad we got something of value for a guy who we were going to lose in a few months for nothing anyways (even though he's been decent in the pen), but it would have been nice if it was something other than an outfielder.
You're right no one is blessed with hindsight but I would like my GM to have some sort of an idea about foresight.
For example something like "Durazo's got a pretty good handle on the strike zone for such a young player and as he gets older it should improve his hitting" is an example of foresight. Or "Mark Grace is not getting any younger and Colbrunn is borderline worhtless so maybe giving them ABs and contract extensions instead of an youngster with good OBP is not a good idea" is an example of foresight as well. Or "the A's GM has been salivating over this Durazo kid so when he calls me for a deal I better make sure I've scouted the league so I don't end up with someone who has only had one solid year pitching the ball" is another example of foresight.
Seriously though, my biggest beef with the trade was the fact that every Jamesian GM in baseball had a hard-on for Ruby and all we got for him was 32 year old Elmer, who admittedly was coming off his only good year as a pro.
