Excellent and in my humble opinion, accurate article on the Devils chances this year. I hope for Devil fans they do it because this might be there best chance to get the conference title and even the state title for a little while....;)

2006 Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils

Pete Fiutak / CollegeFootballNews.com

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Arizona State is going to be really, really, good. Like, national title level good if everything breaks the right way.

Oh sure, the last few seasons under head coach Dirk Koetter have been explosive with times of unbelievable offense and enough excitement to think the corner is about to be turned, and then WHAM. Something happens to ruin all the fun.
Last season's team was a brilliant disappointment with the talent to push the two most athletic teams in America, LSU and USC, up until the last minute, but it lost both games. After all the fireworks and all the big numbers, the 2005 Sun Devils' best win was over ... Northwestern? Rutgers? The be elite you have to beat the elite, and this year's team has the makeup to beat the best of the best. At least it does on offense.

You know your situation is good when college football's best passer is second string. Rudy Carpenter, who led the nation in passing efficiency, was magnificent over the second half of last year with starter Sam Keller out with a thumb injury, and now the Sun Devils have two All-America caliber signal callers to run a frightening attack that should put up 35 points a game before leaving the locker room.

On both sides of the ball, Koetter has assembled a team that can run, hit, throw, and catch as well as anyone in the nation. The special teams will be tremendous with Terry Richardson back returning punts and kicks, and the defense should see some improvement with the addition of several good JUCO prospects along with Northwestern transfer Loren Howard and BYU transfer Michael Marquardt on the line. So what's missing?

The confidence is certainly there, players like Keller will make sure of that. The talent is there. The coaching, despite what some Sun Devil fans think, is there. It's just a matter of putting everything together and finally coming up with big Pac 10 wins.
In the Koetter era, the best Pac 10 victory came in 2003 beating a decent Oregon team 59-14. The second best, arguably, was a 27-14 win in 2004 over an Oregon State team that finished 7-5. Yeah, zzzzzzz. Where are the upsets over USC? How about a win over a mighty Cal team? Nope, nothing. To get where ASU needs to go, it has to become a living, breathing player in in the Pac 10 race. Otherwise, next year we'll be talking about how the 2007 Sun Devils really, truly have what it takes to be a national power.

The Schedule: It's not all that bad outside of road trips to Cal and USC, which could kill any dreams of a Pac 10 title. The road trip to Colorado will have the storyline of two former Boise State head coaches squaring off, but the Sun Devils had better not look past Nevada the week before. It'll be hard to get into too much of a groove with five road dates in seven games hurt by the imbalance of the Pac 10 schedule; some have to play five conference road games.

Best Offensive Player: Junior TE Zach Miller. He likely would've been a first round NFL pick had he been able to come out as a sophomore and would've been the most complete prospect in this year's tight end rich draft. Most of the world knows him for his highlight-reel catches, but the scouts have taken particular note of how good a blocker he has become.

Best Defensive Player: Senior SS Zach Catanese. One of the Pac 10's biggest hitters and the new leader of the defensive back seven, Catanese should start to get more notoriety this season. He needs to make more big plays against the pass, but his main job is helping make tone-setting stops against the run.

Key player to a successful season: Senior CB Keno Walter-White. The ASU secondary struggled last season even by Pac 10 standards. The safeties will be strong with the return of Zach Catanese and Josh Barnett, so the corners have to shine. Walter-White has the best combination of talent and experience, and hopefully players like Justin Tryon, Chad Green and Chris Baloney can help boost the production.

The season will be a success if ... Arizona State wins the Pac 10 title. Enough is enough. There's more than enough experience, talent, and athleticism to win the title and get to the BCS. There are some killer league road games to deal with, but there will always be landmines. A great team has to find a way to get the job done, and this, flaws and all, has the potential to be a great team.

Key game: September 23 at California. The Sun Devils and Bears didn't play last year, but they do now in the new everyone plays everyone Pac 10 world. The conference opener could be a stepping stone game for ASU with a chance, for all intents and purposes, to put the Pac 10 title away over the following two games against Oregon and at USC. A loss wouldn't be a killer, but it would mean there'd be no more margin for error.

2005 Fun Stats:
- Penalties: Arizona State 114 for 982 yards - Opponents 80 for 666 yards
- Average yards per catch: Arizona State 14.4 - Opponents 14.1
- Sacks: Opponents 36 for 222 yards - Arizona State 22 for 147 yards

Not funny.

This articles been out for a while..... A good read for those who haven't seen it however. Collegefootballnews.com has always given us the benefit of the doubt (and supported us) so I don't pay too much attention. It is a great site for college football fans. Whats a UofA fan doing looking at a college football site anyways? :D

The Game against Colorado will be interesting. Seeing their different styles first hand at Boise State games, i'm not sure who has the edge.

Both are offensive minded, but Hawkins offensive coordinator is now coach at Boise State, so Koetter gets the Edge becuase of experience.

Defensivly, ASU looks good this year. Hawkins still has Barnetts players in his system. If anyone can get them ready it's Hawkins and the team seems to be buying into his style, but they still have a ways to go. Edge ASU

Colorado is a wild card. Hawkins has a way of getting more out of players than is expected. He lost only 10 games in 5 years at Boise State.

I think ASU wll win this game by one or two touchdowns. It's good to see former coaches face eachother, but I bet neither coach wants to play Boise State.

Personally I think the schedule just about guarantees ASU will NOT be a national title contender. Look at the 3 games in a row, at Cal, Oregon, at USC and ask yourself how ASU is going to handle that?.

I think ASU is going to be very explosive but if Cal gets any kind of QB play this year they may win the Pac 10, and despite their massive losses, USC still has more talent than anybody else, again QB is the question. ANd Oregon is sort of like Cal, if they get QB play watch out they're still pretty talented.

ASU has the QB play and a really nice offense but their defense is going to really have to step it up to win the conference. I just think having to play at both Cal and USC is going to doom their chances.

One thing is for certain - Let's root that the Pac-10 goes undefeated in non-conference games this year. I am sick and tired of getting no-cred in the press. For three years it has been USC and 9 others (except Cal had the one good season but blew it in their bowl game).

My keys to the season - how good will Keegan Herring be? Can Rudy Burgess imitate Reggie Bush? ... If we can hold defenses to 24 points or less, we could run the table - easily. But <24 points is a hard thing to do now days.

 (Quietly steaming)

I can agree that you guys have had more success then us the last few years (although i wouldn't be exactly be trumpeting 'mediocre' compared to 'terrible') but i truly believe Mike Stoops to be a better motivator and and recruiter (and his equal in X's and O's) then Koetter and while we will never have the high scoring offense you guys do - i dont think we need it. We will have a better defense (by far) and Tui. So I'll take our chances over you guys the next few years. Plus i think Stoops is in Koetters head as witnessed by the thrashing two years ago and the injury plagued special teams TD win you guys got last year in Tempe. Plus as the article points out, Koetter can't get his boys ready for the big games. So far we have one marquee win (UCLA last year) in Stoops tenure, and you have none in Koetters five years.

So if you are asking me would i trade football programs with you guys at this point in time......my answer is no.

Keep pimping your 7-5 records all day long. It's taken some time to claw out of the Mackovic era but believe me, the tide is turning......

So going to bowl games and having winning records isn't as good as beating UCLA once?

One good week and 3-8 seasons is better than competing against good teams consistently and having winning seasons and bowl games.

You're crazy.

Go Devils

You can disagree. But i think the pieces are in place to be a consistent big time winner. I like our coach, I like our facilities, i like our ability to recruit and most of all i like our QB. I dont think this is going to be such a "assinine" comment after this season but we will see....

Do any Cats fans feel the same way i do....?The only response i have gotten is from diluted Devils who like to think that we are that far off from 7-5 win seasons and winning a bowl game. Hell i expect that to happen this year.....

Looks like Keller has beaten out Carpenter for the starters role.

Unfortunately, in most cases, like the spring practice, and the scrimmage last night, this doesnt seem to be the case. I think that Carpenter is the better player, but Keller gets the nod because he is a senior. Hopefully this move doesnt cost us.

My brother is an ASU guy and we were talking about this and comparing to the Terry Dean/Danny Wuerfful situation in Florida about ten years back. Keller might have the better tools for the next level, but Carpenter might be the best choice for QB because he makes much better decisions (on and off the field) and seems to be a better fit for the offense than Keller. In the end though, you can't really blame Koetter for going with the senior.

Are you really saying UA's win over UCLA is better than any win ASU has had in the past few years? That they have not had a marquee win? I believe they KILLED #12 Iowa in a few years ago and went into #6 Oregon and beat them in 2002. Koetter's team werent prepared to play big games in 04, but last year they played their asses off versus LSU and USC they just werent good enough to pull them out.

I like ASU but gonna be hard to root for Dirk the Jerk! Can't beleive he pulled this crap so close to season basically screwing Keller! I hope it blows up in his face, remember your boy Carpenter played against the must weaker part of the schedule and weak defenses! Don't expect him to make it through the season either especially if he is taking off running to often!
