The Diamondbacks’ pursuit of a center fielder via a trade slowed slightly on Friday, as general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. devoted much of his time to trying to reach a deal with arbitration-eligible pitcher Casey Fossum.
With the clock ticking toward a hearing on Monday before a three-person panel in Tampa, Fla., Garagiola took what he called one of his "final shots" with agent Bo McKinnis. It was unsuccessful.

"As of now, we have people scheduled to leave (this morning) for Tampa, and I’ll be behind them on Sunday," said Garagiola, who expects to talk to McKinnis today.

If an agreement is not reached, the panel will choose either the $800,000 salary proposal for 2005 that the DBacks submitted or the $1.35 million Fossum and McKinnis countered with.

Still, there were developments in the center-field situation Friday, with the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reporting that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were in talks with Arizona regarding Jose Cruz Jr.

Garagiola would not comment on the report, but Cruz fits the D-Backs’ criteria: a veteran who is sound defensively and affordable. His salary for 2005 is $4 million.

Meanwhile, Eric Byrnes avoided arbitration with the Oakland Athletics by signing a one-year, $2.2 million pact. Byrnes and the New York Mets’ Mike Cameron, who is due $6 million in ’05 and ’06, remain potential suitors.

CINTRON SHINES
Shortstop Alex Cintron was the only D-Back who made a final roster in the Caribbean Series, and he has been impressive, Garagiola said. Playing for Puerto Rico, Cintron collected four hits with an RBI and scored twice in a 6-5 loss against Venezuela on Thursday.

" ‘Rizz’ (scouting director Mike Rizzo) said he looked good and is in good shape," Garagiola said. "Alex told him he was in a great frame of mind and ready to come to camp. So, it was positive."

SHORT HOPS
Pitcher Oscar Villarreal, who was limited to 17 games a year ago with right elbow troubles that led to nerve transposition surgery, was scheduled to throw off a mound on Friday for the first time since the operation. Garagiola said he had not yet received a report.

A reliever the last two seasons, Villarreal is expected to contend for a spot in the rotation in spring training.

Team officials are continuing to discuss a contract proposal for unsigned 2004 first-round draft selection Stephen Drew but have not yet presented anything to the player or his agent, Scott Boras.

Basically, a (probably) more durable Danny Bautista, right down to the salary. Cruz is 2 years younger, .250 BA and .791 OPS career and 1:2 BB:K ratio. Danny is .272/.724, and roughly 1:3 BB:K ratio, but has been in the majors several more years with a lot less at bats due to injuries. Fielding looks pretty similar at a quick glance. Fine, whatever - but we better not give up any more for Cruz than we would have given up for Danny B.

Another loser move

Jose Cruz for crying out loud. What are we thinking. He sucks, we might as well have offered Bautista a low ball contract. This is assinine.

Stay away from Cruz. I believe any player that goes from one team to another every year is not worth picking up. There must be a reason this guy changes teams a lot.

If Cintron can play like he did a few years ago I wonder if the Diamondbacks will give him a shot at second?

After all the carping on this board for the past few months, I've finally seen the light--Cruz sucks, Glaus sucks, Ortiz sucks, Green sucks, whoever we sign or trade for will inevitably suck, Tracy's weak for a corner infielder, Gonzo's injured, Webb can't throw a strike, Vasquez doesn't want to be here, we're going to trade Jackson and Quentin for garbage, beers cost $7 at BOB and it takes 45 minutes for me to get home after a game.

That's it. Now I'm a Mercury fan.

I have never bashed Glaus, Ortiz or any of the new guys. I am looking forward to the season and believe this team will be competitive in the weak NL West.

I'm OK with Glaus, too. I wasn't as upset about Clayton as I probably should be according to some. If Green were for only 2 years, likewise Ortiz, I'd be a lot more comfortable with them.

My bashing is aimed at the sometimes bone-headed process by which players are chosen and contracted by the FO. Cruz is just a healthier Danny Bautista. I liked Bautista, and it does seem sort of ironic that Tampa Bay got him and we are going after Cruz from Tampa Bay.

All I said was, since we didn't think Danny was worth squat and let him walk, we better not trade much away for Cruz because he's not worth a penny more than Danny was. Anything more than a scrub prospect in trade is simply the proof positive how bass-akwards and short-sighted the FO tends to be when assembling a team.

Cruz is a perfect example of another team's junk looking better than the D-Backs junk - when in fact it's not.

Terrero has some flaws, from what I understand, not having really seen him play, but he is only 24 and has significant upside. Cruz has no upside, he's just barely above replacement level player. Giving up anything of consequence for him is insane.

I'd go with Terrero. This year is perfect to see whether or not he is your centerfielder of the future. Back him up with Q if need be, but let him play. If they acquire junk, and don't use Terrero, he will decline in value and probably opportunity. Playing at AAA does him no good.

An average centerfielder who plays an above average RF - so, of course, Mr. Garagiola wants to put him back in CF.

Walked 100 times w/ SF in 2003, but struck out just as much (and about every other season). Still, (unlike Bautista) he's got power and isn't too expensive. Those making the analogy should know that Bautista's career high is 11 HRs. Cruz has hit 30 HRs twice and 20 two times as well. This is the type of player you'd want in RF if some money could be spent on a star CF.

Cruz is making $4 Million this year, according to what I've found online, $3,500,000 base plus $500K for making 600 plate appearances in 2004, and is a FA after this year (hmmmm - betcha we'll sign him to an extension.). Danny signed for $1.9 M. Not that we could have gotten him that low, but he probably would have signed for less than $4M since he said he'd cut his salary to stay.

Cruz has a little more pop, true, though appears very, very streaky at the plate. Overall, I do not see much of an improvement. At this point I'd agree to give Terrero his chance.

I mean, if by some miracle we are in serious contention and he's the only thing holding us back, we can spend excessively in midseason.
