This is a wildly good move. Consistent Cy Young candidate in his prime. No concern about this age 37+ season.

At least 1 pitcher is out now. Maybe 2
Burnes is signed to a 6 year deal. Which is amazing. But I can’t help but wonder what this might mean for Gallen.

That is why I said maybe 2.

It's a real possibility that Gallen or Kelly is out for a real closer
I can see a scenario where Kelly is traded this year and Gallen after this upcoming season, or at the trade deadline in ‘26 (IIRC, Gallen is signed thru the 2026 season?).

Nice signing. Was reading the Giants refused to include an opt out clause as well, which likely hurt their offer.

He is a FA after this season.

3. What to do about Zac Gallen?
Gallen is eligible for salary arbitration for the final time this winter, and he will be a free agent after the 2025 season. To this point, there have been no reported extension talks. Will Arizona try to extend Gallen this winter? Should the club trade him in the offseason and get something back? Or can the D-backs let the season play out, make him a qualifying offer next year and get a Competitive Balance Draft pick back for him if he signs elsewhere?

Rotation as it stands
Gallen R
Burns R
Rodriguez L
Kelly R
Pfaadt R

Currently on the outside
R. Nelson R
Montgomery L
Henry L
Diaz R
Walston L

Guys pegged to be ready this year
Yu-Min Lin L
Cristian Mena R

Lots of arms to use to make a trade.

Ryne has to make this rotation over Kelly in my opinion. Kelly is showing wear and tear the last two seasons.

Let's just hope that the Burnes signing means that Montgomery will be jettisoned soon via trade for a couple buckets of balls or a late round draft pick. I know the DBacks don't want to eat the contract, but you don't need a 6+ or 7+ ERA pitcher in the starting rotation. I guess he could be used for mop up duty if the DBacks have a 10+ run lead late in the game.

Read the the Braves are interested if the D-backs 60%+ of his salary.

I don't follow Major League Baseball all that much, but this sounds like an excellent signing, especially since the Diamondbacks didn't have to give up any assets other than money to sign him.
