The Diamondbacks have signed catcher Rod Barajas, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports (Twitter links). The MVP Sports Group client obtains a minor league deal, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). He'll earn $800K if he makes the MLB team, according to Piecoro. Barajas began his career with the Diamondbacks, playing in Arizona from 1999-2003.

Nieves is 35 and Barajas is 37. They both bat righty. While it is a good idea to have three Catchers on the roster, it is interesting that they are both nearing the twilight of their career.

Then again, Montero is not going anywhere soon. So it would make no sense to have a young backup Catcher sitting on the bench. Barajas could be very useful as a pinch-hitter.

Good points, also I did not realize Nieves was that old.

Did Towers say in what way Barajas resembles Gibson?
I would say that when he was last with us, he was semi-gritty. BTW, the Front Office (I forget whom it was) distanced themselves from the "gritty" tag by saying they preferred players who were "winners".

I suppose I have to get over the whole thing now.

Here is what the AzRepublic reported today regarding the signing of Barajas.

The Diamondbacks agreed to terms with free-agent catcher Rod Barajas on a minor-league contract that will pay him $800,000, if he makes the Opening Day roster.

Barajas, 37, who hit .206 with a .625 OPS for Pittsburgh last season, will compete with Wil Nieves for the backup job to Miguel Montero.
'Wish someone would offer me $800,000 to compete for a half-year of work. I'm a lefty, though, so it would have to be as backup 1B. :D
