Because the Dbacks are not a team with infinite financial resources. I'd rather they pocket the money and wait for something useful to spend it on. There is no cap in baseball, no max or minimum payroll. They save money now they can use it mid season to trade for an actual position of need, use it next season to add an actually GOOD player, who knows. I just dont see the need for another expensive pile of average.

And all those financial issues aside, I think Arroyo is going to really struggle anyway.

At the same time attendance has declined TV revenues have skyrocketed. I'd like to know what the real operating budget is today and what it projects to be over the next few years. I'm guessing they have money to spend. Not Dodger or Yankee money but they're not in danger of going bankrupt anymore.

Also did anybody else see the Tanaka press conference. The guy chartered a 787 to fly himself, his wife and his dog to NY. The only reason he ever talked to the Dbacks was to get more money out of the Yankees. No way he was EVER gonna come play in little old Phoenix.

It's hard to convince me that 23 million is not a big deal when earlier this winter we gave away a prospect just to save 5 or 6 million.
