That's a reasonable price. Should of matched it if he let us. Made room somewhere else

Okay... this is the first loss that makes absolutely zero sense from the Cardinals point of view. That's a perfectly reasonable salary, he was a playmaker for us last year and the very solid secondary that we've had the last three years is basically now just... PP.

that sucks. This makes me angry.

Are we targeting a Safety now in the 1st rd? Does Buc still remember how to play the position?

Bethea: old
Branch: old/injury prone
TM: injury prone/slot CB
Harlan Miller...?

good lord... why is branch still on this team? There was FAT to cut to give us room to sign a guy like Swearinger. This pisses me off. The secondary has literally ONE player on it we can count on. That's a big freaking problem, especially because we lost a very valuable piece up front with CC.

Our starters are Honey Badger & Bethea, with Branch & Harlan Miller as backups. HB will slide over to slot corner in nickel & dime packages & Branch will move into SS or maybe FS depending on what Bethea is playing. Miller will probably be the emergency backup S & CB that rarely plays.

I would expect a cheaper veteran CB signing to compete with Bethel & Brandon Williams at #2 CB & probably another CB drafted (hopefully in one of the 1st 3 rounds).

We could always slide Bucannon back to safety in nickel & dime packages & have Sio Moore & Karlos Dansby (assuming he signs) at the ILB spots.

As much as I liked both Tony Jefferson & DJ Swearinger, I think we'll be ok next year.

Big problem here... well, two of them. HB showed he isn't effecting back at S AND he just can't be counted on to stay healthy... which means, we're probably looking at (even in best case scenario)... HB playing the nickel and just an AWFUL Safety tandem of Bethea and Branch at safety.

Granted, he's injury-prone, but The Badger plus Patty P = 2 DB's we can count on.

Also - this draft is deep in sub 4.45 corners. After we address S and LB and WR in the first 2 days, I'd expect SK to work his magic and pull a couple of quality corners out of his butt on Day 3.

Finally, I wouldn't give up on Bethel just yet. Plus - We don't know whether the coaches can develop Brandon Williams - who was thrown to the wolves far too soon oast year. Plus-plus: Is Cooper a lost cause? I read that SK was continuiing to make a run at him.

Sorry... you can't count on someone who can't stay on the field... and didn't look anything like himself last year even when he was on it. His body has taken A BIG beating in four years. I'd be surprised if it wasn't starting to take an overall toll on his effectiveness.

So in our patchwork defensive backfield we let go the only 2 players who were able to stay healthy and actually contribute. And no one signed yet. Yeah, we're going to contend alright.

I posted this in another thread but DJS may have been the problem they were alluding to as not buying in or whatever. He could have been freelancing for all we know & a cancer in the locker room. Could be the reason he moved around so much early on. We just don't know.

You have a point, but HB is quick to point out that both his major injuries were non-contact ones and that rehabbing to full-speed took longer than expected.

straight from the mouth of Sauron, Darren Urban himself:

"The safety trio of Tyrann Mathieu, Tyvon Branch and Antoine Bethea should be OK if Mathieu and Branch can stay healthy. That’s the hope."

Great... we have a safety trio that should be OK... if it can stay healthy, which it hasn't shown it can. Urban's usually the mouthpiece for the team so it looks like we're going in with a Safety squad... that might be okay. That's not good... especially considering our 2nd CB slot right now currently has a "failure-in-progress" (Bethel) and the worst CB I've ever seen (Williams).

Man, this puts a damper on my "ONE LAST RIDE!" thoughts going into the season. I didn't expect to get DJ, CC and TJ all back... I figured we'd lose two of them, but to lose every solid defensive FA we had that couldn't be tagged isn't good from a management perspective, IMO.

that's fine... but we're now talking about a guy with TWO ACLs on both knees. I can't think of many guys who end up coming all the way back from that... much less him being shut down for his shoulder last year as well.

And the fact that they were both non-contact make me even more leery of him staying healthy. It doesn't speak well, IMO for the way his body holds up in general.

Not a FS among the three of them. SK cannot be finished addressing the safety position. Plus the so-so way in which Branch played should cast doubt over whether he should be released or re-signed at a lower salary.

Buc is not going back to a position he has never played in the NFL. I said it when he was drafted that he is a LB and always will be. It's the new wave 3-4 defense.

I just found myself erupting into a maniacal laugh when I read this because it's all true... there is still time and a draft but I feel you

just saying... Urban says we're "okay" at Safety... you can usually think he's speaking for the team. Unless we're going to have to be forced to take one early in the draft.

all those corners were either AWFUL last year... or were below average (Cooper). And expecting day 3 corners to be pulled out of Keim's butt is questionable considering the rest of the day 3 corners he's done that with might have been pulled out of his butt, and looked like playing like CRAP on the field... or getting cut without even seeing it.

This has crossed my mind, could the Cards be seeing the upcoming season for what it is with a marginal shot with Fitz and Palmer and are actually saving some money (removed from Chandler Jones which was a necessity being that he is young) to rebuild full mode next season... this is my feeling

Swearinger's modest contract goes against that thought... and if they're going full rebuild mode next year... why save money to spend then if you've already got talent on the team NOW? I get not signing CC in your above scenario... but letting both YOUNG safeties walk out the door doesn't make sense if you're thinking about the future.

Ok at Safety like we were ok at CB last year? We're so screwed.

My thoughts as well. People were even convincing themselves that the cast-off (who's name escapes me because... well, he was a castoff) who was having a "good camp" and tore his ACL was going to be the answer and that Brandon Williams was game ready!

They'll prob convince themselves of the same here. Lots of time with Branch and Bethea on the field (which will happen even IF HB is healthy) is gonna be freaking ugly, IMO.

The funny thing is that BA would love to play our defense. He'd be taking shots all game long!
