Or they could not give him a new deal at all and make him sit out for 3 years! He has zero leverage

Yeah cause that always works out well for teams. If the Cards keep him while he is holding out he still gets paid and takes up cap space. The only thing a non-guaranteed contract means that if he gets released the Cardinals would have no dead space.

Lets hope Keim has one more trade in him.

I would have like to bring CC home for a 5th round pick...but he's going to the ravens.

There are some solid veteran defensive players that we could pick up.

Its not going to come to that, I'm just saying...if the Cards said we will match the guaranteed money of the highest paid WR in the NFL...or even go above that...and he says says no, then the cards don't have to do bend to his will.

They already have a deal in mind, and Hopkins deserves to be paid like a top WR...but its not like he is negotiating from a position of strength. 3 years on a deal is 3 years...its not in the realm of time that a player would be willing to hold out.

This. I'm tired of these player with no leverage thinking they can play hardball. This trade was a no brainer. DJ was not worth anything too us based on his usage. We basically got Hopkins for a 2nd which I can deal with even if he decides to be a crybaby and sit.

I didn’t read the thread but is he due for a contract? If not, how long is he under contract?

Regardless this definitely frees up the 8th for Wirfs. Or maybe a trade down.

3 years remaining on his current contract, but he 100% wants a pay raise/restructure, which is the main reason he was traded.

Texans fan here...congrats on fleecing the Texans...I didn’t think there was any way O’Brien could become more of a laughingstock than he did after the Clowney trade, but he did it.

Anyway, you guys are getting not only a great player in Hopkins, but, from what I’ve seen, a really good guy as well. In a way, I’m happy for him to have escaped the clown show going on in Houston. You will definitely enjoy watching him.

Best of luck next year.

Coming from we, the Cards fans who are all too familiar with years of being a laughingstock, can feel your pain. You get a new coach and GM you'll get back in it

I'm not worried about paying Hopkins. Won't we just use LF's money when he retires in a year or two.

I do wonder though about all the 'good' WRs we drafted the last couple years. They looked awesome on paper. Have we given up on most of them already? If not, shouldn't we be looking at getting a good TE in place of a couple of them? I am still waiting after all these years for the Cards to get 'that' TE. It seems to me that all the recent Super Bowl winners of this century have had a great TE.

This Cardinals-Texans trade was agreed to as far back as March 5th! I heard about it over the weekend but could not get confirmation and to be completely honest did not believe it was true based on how absurd the trade was
He should have checked with Bucky. :D

Hilarious excerpts from Bill Barnwell put this fleecing into perspective [emphasis added]:
Let's start with Johnson, who should have had negative trade value, especially after the Cardinals slapped the transition tag on Kenyan Drake earlier this morning. Johnson is now three years removed from his only productive NFL season. He missed almost the entire 2017 season with a wrist injury and has been a replacement-level back over the last two seasons.

Johnson would likely be in line to get a one-year deal in the $2 million range if he hit the open market. Instead, his $10.2 million base salary is already guaranteed for 2020, and $2.1 million of his base salary in 2021 guarantees in five days. Throw in $960,000 in per-game roster bonuses and the Texans are on the hook for more than $13 million for Johnson over the next 12 months.

Instead of sending a third-round pick to ship off Johnson, the Cardinals somehow managed to ship off Johnson by swapping fourth-round picks with the Texans. When you consider that the Texans are sending their 2020 fourth-rounder and getting a 2021 fourth-rounder in return, most teams would actually consider the pick swap a win for the Cardinals. I honestly admire Arizona general manager Steve Keim's audacity in even asking to swap fourth-rounders; it's as if someone offered you $1,000 for your VHS copy of "Mr. Deeds" and you asked that person for more before saying yes.

...

That half of the deal alone is a disaster for the Texans. The other half -- shipping out an unquestioned, bona fide star at wide receiver for the 40th pick in the draft -- is somehow even worse. I don't need to tell you how good Hopkins is, but remember that he was even posting huge numbers while O'Brien was saddling him with anonymous tall quarterbacks like Ryan Mallett, Tom Savage and Brock Osweiler, let alone once Deshaun Watson got there.

We saw what the market for a franchise wide receiver on a second contract looks like last year when the Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns. Hopkins has a better off-field reputation and has been both healthier and more productive than OBJ, although Beckham was a year younger when he was dealt. The Browns sent the 17th and 95th picks and a starting strong safety, Jabrill Peppers, to acquire Beckham. The Texans are getting the 40th pick from the Cardinals for Hopkins.
