while kobe has shown that he is a very good player (maybe even a superstar-type player) with the lakers. there are some real problems that may come if we go after kobe.

*first kobe's trail wont start until the end of the season. based on the way that the pre trail has shaped up i would be shocked if it wouldnt last for a couple of months. at that point it would be well with in the summer signing period and if you havent spend your money well by that point you may not get any return if he signs with someone else. and worst case is that he is convicted and you have already signed him. at that point your team looks like it doesnt care about some poor 19 year old girl who was raped by kobe and that could by a real problem in selling to fans.

*if kobe does come he will wont to control the ball. we just got rid of marbary in part because of his controlling the ball at all times. in other words will kobe be will to be part of the amare, marion, kobe team or would he want to it to be the kobe team?

*if kobe comes will he take away from the development of our younger players. with kobe on the team it makes it very hard to call plays from other players at crunch time and that may slow the development of some of our other players.

these are just some thoughts tell me what you think?

Scotsman13 I agree with your post. I just argued this point in a different thread. I still think that Kobe is a great talent but I would hate to see the Suns sign him and then realize that they will now have to trade Amare and Marion to bring in players that compliment Kobe. (think allen iverson) Don't be suprised if very few people agree with you though. The general sentiment is that Kobe is the type of talent that you can't pass up. I personally think that the risks far outweight the potential returns when it comes to Kobe.

If our goal is to win a championship I think we'll need him. What are the odds that a handful of draft pics will take us over the top? People seem to forget how many people get drafted and never make it. How many people have been drafted since Kobe? How many have been better? The league right now is about superstars. There are only a few superstars in the League. Right now Shaq and Duncan are the two best players. Two beat them you'll probably need two superstars and some really good players (Amare, Kobe, etc.)

Is our goal to make it to the playoffs for several years in a row or to win a championship?

Why not wait a year longer and get some of the vets due out that year? Why do we "have" to get anyone next year? I would wait on Kobe.

Kobe and Shaq were draft picks once. We seem to forget that Kobe didn't do much until his 3rd year in the league. Amare is still only half way done with his second and has been out with an injury. I would rather develop Amare and build around him the mortgage the franchise on Kobe and find out that the Suns made a bad decision on a selfish player.

I would say that Kobe is probably high on the Suns list - The one that used to include Dennis Rodman .... It now includes names like Horry, Kidd, Wallace..... If he's not in jail, Kobe would be the best available talent but he'll never wear a Suns uni.

Speaking of Dennis, he's gonna play again...

"Dennis Rodman practiced with the Long Beach Jam for the first time Saturday and is expected to make his debut for the American Basketball Association team Friday. "

question is how good is kobe when he doesnt have shaq backing him up? right now the lakers are 1 and 4 with shaq out of the line up. that doesnt give me a lot of faith that he can can carrying a team to a championship. the same thing happened last year when shaq was down, but this year kobe has payton next to him and he still cant get wins.

Thats because he dominates the offense with selfish play. Micheal Jordan didn't win either until he learned that he needed to get his teammates involved to take pressure off of himself. Remember the "Jordan Rules" that the pistons used to knock the bulls out of the playoffs year after year. Well they became obsolete when Jordon got the rest of his team involved in the offense and then took over in crunch time. Kobe hasn't learned that yet. If he does then I will change my opinion of him. Until then he is a selfish scorer that will never lead a team to a championship by himself.

By the way, he has had flashes in the playoffs where he decided to play that way, and the lakers won 3 championships because of it. If he hadn't deferred to Shaq in those years, then He still wouldn't have a ring.
