Do we have a rivalry with Dallas?

Was reading the Spurs/Suns thread over at the Mavs board. It was right above a multi-page thread entitled "10 things I hate about the Suns." The Suns hate is thick and plentiful.

Was curious if the hate for Dallas is the same here. We hate the Lakers, but this crowd seems to look at the rest of the league in a clinical way (i.e. those guys are good, this is what we need to do to beat them, etc.). That kind of outlook jives with me, anyway, and tends to be the threads I participate in.

I don't really hate any team, but if Mavs fans want to crank up the trash talk, I could probably come to hate Dallas fairly quickly. And it would be nice to foster a real rivalry that lasted longer than half a generation.

I really don't hate the Mavs (not like the I hate the Lakers and the Spurs), but I guess you could say we have a rivalry just because we're easily the two best teams in the league.

In this season the real big wins would be over the Mavs, but it's still great to see the Lakers lose.

When I think if rivalries, I think of College football. The rivalry teams HATE each other and wining or losing can make or break a season, no matter what.

There are the "elite" teams that everyone says we need to beat, and those are as close to a real rivalry we have. I also think that rivalries develop when there is bad blood. (Manu, Kobe)

Cuban promotes the hate in Dallas. They can't get over the mistake of letting Nash go.

Not really, The Nash factor probably leaves them hating the Suns more than Suns fans hate the Mavs.

I would assume if Atlanta was in the same conference and decent we would feel the same way about them as Mavs fans do about the Suns.

I think our 2 main rivals are Dallas and the Spurs. Just simply because they are the two teams that have stood in our way the last 2 years. The Lakers are an after thought.

I hate them for having beaten us last year, but it's hardly a 'rivalry.' They beat us without Amare Stoudemire and Raja Bell. Imagine if we'd been given Raja and Amare back and they'd lost both Dirk Nowitzki and... say... Devin Harris for the year. We would have swept them. If the Mavs beat us this spring at full strength, THEN I'll start to hate them full time. As is, they don't raise my blood pressure the way the Lakers do.

Funny that the Mavs Fans hate on the Suns. It must be an insecurity thing.

I have no hate for them or their team. Heck, the Mavs were the Suns-east for years on their climb out of the dregs of the league (Finley, Nash, etc). They have built a great team. They helped the league (along with Sacto) start believing in the power of the run-and-gun game again. Course, Mr. Nash had much to do with that (and Don Nelson). Dirk is a heck of a player...I would take him on a Suns team anyday.

The Mavs are kinda like the Spurs used to be. I always thought the Spurs played boring ball, but were a class act back in the D-Rob/Sean Elliot days. It is only in the last few years the Spurs have become a more hated team. Too much success with too much dirty play = too smug = more hated.

If the Mavs keep it up, they will head down that path. ;)

Now don't get me started on the Lakers...or the Jazz...or Jordon's Bulls (*cries a little into 1993 Finals rally towel*).

I don't hate the Mavs. I do hate the city of Dallas though- anyone who's been there should probably feel the same. The natural landscape is a wasteland, and the people are horrid.

I do hate the Lakers, and the Spurs (they are dirty). I respect the Mavs as a team, but I dislike their fans.

I must say, I know a lot of NBA fans are growing to hate the Suns because of Suns fans. I think they feel like Suns fans are acting like the Suns have won back to back titles, when in reality they haven't won anything yet.

Wow. Interesting to hear that. And sad.

Suns fans for years have been some of the classiest and most knowledgeable in the league (looking from the inside out, at least).

I remember so many games over the years where there was true appreciation in the arena when a non-Suns team was playing great, classic bball. General limit on yahoos and idiots...fairly objective...as someone said, fairly 'clinical' assessment of their own and other team's strengths and weaknesses. Fairly respectful of opponents who were not jerks.

Hope Suns fans don't lose those qualities if the team wins it all.

Here is a classic:

Ahem...I think my number has been called. Drum roll please.
I hate the Suns. I hate their name, Suns. Why not call them what they really are? The "Phoenix - Media Darlings" or the "Phoenix - Anything to take our mind off the Cardinals".

I hate how they have a direct link between ESPN and their collective penis.

I hate the heat in Phoenix. I hate how people say, "You don't notice it, because it's a dry heat" I hate that everyone there is a "dry stupid"
I hate the way their mascot is a gorilla. Was Chuck-e-Cheese busy? He looks like he should be waving at traffic outside a vacuum cleaner hospital.

I hate Steve Nash. He took the money and ran, and ran, and ran, and ran out of energy every playoff. I hate how someone with such a one sided game can be MVP. I blame the exchange rate. 15 assists must be 30 points 10 rebounds and 3 steals Canadian.

I hate Amare Stodimre. I hate his nickname. STAT, must mean Some Teams Always Tank.

I hate The Matrix, What a great way too sell shoes. Lets nickname him after a Keanu Reeves movie. What, was "My Own Private Idaho" taken? Should have been called The Matrix Revolutions. (Worst sequel ever)

I hate Rajah Bell. I hate how he gets free Taco's for life. I hope he gets the trots for life.

I hate D'antoni. I hate his snarl every time he doesn't get a call. Looks like someone **** in his Cheerios. I hate how he took Nellie Ball and removed any resemblance of defense. He's done for basketball what pantyhose did for fingerbanging. Worked so great for Nellie. I hate how so many teams have been too stupid to figure it out.

I hate the Suns. I hate the Suns. I hate, Hate, HATE the Suns.

I can't wait until March 14. I hope we do to the Mavs what we did to the Spurs last night. Especially since it will be in Dallas.

I think it is funny how all the things they list they hate about us is things we really can't control or have nothing to do with the game. (i.e. our schedule, star players being out on other teams when we play them, media attention, Coach D's mustache, etc).

I think the bulk of the hate comes from them losing Nash to us.

I've been lurking there for sometime now, and the hatred is unbelievable.

What makes it even worse, is that the Mavs are in exactly the same position as us. Title-less. Even with near-identical records they claim to be light years ahead in superiority.

They use reasons such as; No defense, weak schedule, 3 allstars/1 allstar to fuel their fire that they are the better team and that Dirk should be MVP.

What's even worse is that they refuse to even consider that Phoenix is a threat. And with the sudden decline of the Spurs, they seem to think that playing in June is merely a formality for them.

I can easily admit that the Mavericks are the best team in the NBA RIGHT NOW And I can easily make a case why Dirk COULD be MVP, but I have enough sense to see that this Phoenix team is significantly better than last years team which took them to 6 games without Amare and KT. Don't get me wrong, the Mavs are better aswell, but I'd say we have improved more than they have over the span of one year.

Plus if they have to meet a healthy Lakers team in the 2nd round, I'd be worried.

I loved this

Ben (Phx): It is interesting that Spurs and Mavs fans try and trash the Suns rather than talk about how good their teams are. I guess they just fear them like the rest of the league does.
