Do you play Madden NFL Football?

An interesting tidbit about Madden.

In the 2004 edition they had each team's basic playbook. It will be interesting to see what DG's will look like next year. I am sure coache's don't reveal everything in these playbooks but it is interesting looking at the different teams playbooks - since there are definite differences and realistic approximations of the approaches teams use in the offenses they run.

The Steelers have some trips bunch trick plays. The Pack has a T formation. Indi has their singleback sets. NE their 5 WR sets. ATL their running plays for QB.

I didn't think it was actually the coaches that submit the plays, I believe EA makes their own playbooks and trys to get it to look like the real NFL. Chances are the plays will be similiar to madden 99 or 98's Minnesota offensive playbook. At least, that'd be my assumption.

Yeah, I read they just take the plays from the previous season the programmers studied from watching game tapes. They don't consult all the head coaches.

One annoying thing was that teams that used the Shotgun formation didn't get a Shotgun in Madden. I know you can "make your own plays" or whatever, but it's pretty annoying that I can't use a ProSet.

Yeah, he's on the "unemployement" line in the offseason. I didn't sign him after season 1 (kept Mac like a sucker), so I haven't seen him in a while.

I am at about 2007 season.

I have made some of my own plays and practiced them but I haven't taken the time to setup a entire playbook of my own yet.

Madden 2004 is really nice. I love being able to change WR patterns at the line.

I don't like the offseason options as much. They need to work on those. They only allow you to scout 15 guys for the draft and you can oly address the stadium after the season and before the off season.

I think that I'm in the preseason of Season 5. I have two Super Bowl appearances and one other NFC Championship appearance. Haven't won the big one yet. I have an awesome D that gets a ton of turnovers but gives up a lot of yards and points.

Josh McCown has been to the Pro Bowl 3 times and is a 99 in throwing power and accuracy. Marcel Shipp went to two or three Pro Bowls before leaving as a free agent because of salary cap restrictions. Jeff Fisher took over the head coaching job after Season 2, but left to coach the Chiefs, and Bill Romanowski is the HC now.

I can't figure out how to get the city to help pay for a good stadium. Because SDS sucks (I assume), I don't sell out that often, but I'm always at 95% capacity plus.

Brian Billick resigned after leading the cardinals to 3 straight superbowls. I love how madden puts coach comments in the game. It said he had accomplished everything he set out for with our team. That was pretty cool.

I think it's good to limit the scouting to 15 players, it's more realistic. You can't be everywhere and scout everybody. Mind you, it's 15 players at each off-season event. i.e. you can see 15 players at the combine, then 15 different players in individual workouts, etc. You can actually get some great info from them. I love how the scouting reports read too, they'll tell you if the combine stats are a good indicator or not.

The only real weakness is that you can seriously stockpile early round picks. I've kept my team competitive over about 6 or 7 seasons, stayed over $10 mil under the cap each year, drafted high each year, and still kept my core players. I think the offseason part of Madden is actually more fun that playing the game, but I'm a football nerd and that's just me :)

I actually agree. Playing the games is fun for a couple seasons, but about halfway through another 14-2 season, I start to get wistful about seeing who'll retire (no one has since Emmitt Smith; when you're 30, you're out the door on my team), who'll be there in the draft, who'll hold out, etc.

I still want to win the Super Bowl (Damn turnovers), but I like drafting, minicamps, free agency, and everything else more than the games at this point.

I love the Madden games. Remember a few years ago when Plummer was rated a 98 (or close) and the next year he was a 67. Ahhh.... the good old days.

I have played through 6 seasons now and after seaosn 2 made Eli Manning. I set his numbers in the mid 80's not to be too homerish and after year 6 the Cards have 2 superbowl wins, Coach Mac resigned saying "I have accomplished all I want to accomplish after 2 SuperBowl wins" and Eli Manning is rated at a 99.

By the way, Pace made 1 pro bowl and is avergaing about 10 sacks a year.

Oh, yeah. Pace never was anything more than a solid starter for me, getting 5-8 sacks per season. I got a guy to play opposite him that's a BEAST, though. He was ROY, set a new single-season sacks record, and been to the Pro Bowl every year he's been in the league.

Me too. I have both Madden and ESPN. Madden's franchise mode is fun. ESPN's is pretty weak. ESPN has the better base to work with for 2005 though. I really think if they expand franchise mode and fix some gameplay issues, it'll be the better game by far. I can't wait for it. My brother is actually playing Madden as I'm typing this, and I'm annoyed by the commentary.

"Some yards are better than none yards"

You would think even Madden couldn't sound dumb reading scripted lines... :)

Anyway, do most people have Madden on the PC? Everyone keeps saying it, but we seriously need to start a Madden league. I have both games on PS2 though. Maybe next year ESPN will be more popular amongst us because I like the online play and there is a feature for online leagues with complete stats and everything.

Also, can games be simulated or do you have to play each game?

It's on the PC. Games can be simulated and these are the requirements from EA:

CPU: PIII or AMD Athlon 700MHz
RAM: 128MB (256MB for Windows XP)
Video: 32MB supported Direct3D capable video card with DirectX 9.0 or higher compatible driver (DirectX 9.0a is recommended). 10 button dual analog gamepad is required for Playmaker Control feature.

You can simulate entire seasons if you want to.

Oh, and I play on PC. Wouldn't have it any other way. Best graphics possible :)

One thing that I hope they fix in 2005 is McCown's wheels. He gets his yards in 2004, but he's wicked slow. I'm sure it's just because the programmers didn't know who he was, but in 2005, he should be as fast as Quincy Carter. Brotha ain't the "pocket passer" that Madden has him listed as.

I'm in season 5, coming off my first Super Bowl win. Anquan is 99, and huge. Bryant Johnson is a probowler, and I have a drafted QB and RB that are probowlers.

I draft Corners all day long, every day, and my secondary is sick. I have a lineman who I drafted in the second round (traded pick) high, who turned out to be an 81 overall!!! I've never had a first rounder at an 81..the lineman (DT) is awesome. My ends are still Wakefield and Pace; last year Wakefield was defensive player of the year.

I'm marching through season 5, but as I get to the playoffs, the game will start hitting me in the face like it always does. My team as a whole is ranked 90 overall, and I can't complain. Hope the real cards echo my cards results. :)

Oh, I play on the PS2.
