Do you think we need another WR?

In answer to the thread title. We need to improve our wide receiver core. This one has real potential problems.

Fitz, age, lost a step, potential injury issues because of age. He can be good.
Smoke. Health problems. Big ?.
Jaron Brown. Good solid rotation receiver. Not a #1. If used as a #1 would be exposed badly.
JJ Nelson. Great speed, but good grief, that little guy could get broken on any play.
Chad Williams. Rookie. Who knows.

We need a quality big bodied, #1 type of receiver.

We shouldn't underestimate Jeremy Ross either. He played well the last two weeks. Coaches like him and he can return punts.

Barring injury, I think we're loaded at WR and were obliged to unload talent from an unusually plentiful surplus.

Isn't that what we all thought last year? Until, of course, the injuries piled up and then WR became a big weakness on the team.

I was surprised they cut the guys they cut (especially the long ones). Makes me think they've already arrived at determining Floyd's replacement (probably Chad W).

They probably determined in advance that Binford, Bundy and Huber weren't going to win out in Camp and the only reason they're keeping Hogan, the Rutgers kid etc. instead is they haven't yet seen what those guys can do.

Bundy is still on the roster, and don't forget we signed Dobson as a FA and Hogan as an UDFA - there is a 6-6 guy as well listed at WR - so that is 3-4 tall WRs to try and make the PS/roster.

these 2 have massive potential. I can see future #1/#2 in them (on paper).

Chad Williams (6'1 204 4.37)
Krishawn Hogan (6'3 222 4.56)

You must not have seen his interview. He's a really good kid from the sound of it. There was one instance where he was in the wrong place at the wrong time & he admits that. He said he needs to watch who his friends are & make wise choices.

One interview isn't going to convince me he's a "special character in a positive way" before he's had to deal with life in the NFL and, you know, PROVES it. Words are wind; actions will do the talking here. I'm not saying he hasn't turned a corner, but Veer's "special character in a positive way" statement was just plain silly, considering.

We need a number one to groom behind Fitz. We can get him in next years draft. Unless we sign a big time receiver that can be a number one then no. We have all the 3,4 and 5 guys that we need.

Enjoyed hearing Williams interview. He sounds like he is humble and is willing to put in the work and leave the riffraff behind. I certainly hope he can do this and become a solid part of our offense.

We will have to wait and see.

We need a big, physical WR to fill the vacancy left by Floyd. There are a bunch of contenders (including C Williams, Hogan, the 6-6 Rutgers Guy plus a couple of UDFA Tryout receivers).

Hopefully, someone will separate from the pack, but we won't be sure until our guys have the opportunity to show it on the field. Plus - more depth couldn't hurt. It would be nice to have a couple off other jump ball guys waiting in the wings.

I think we should see if/how the Browns bounce back and if Williams can acclimate quickly instead of trying to sign someone else

I have no idea about his character, but he is intelligent and one can grasp that immediately on how well he is able to converse and get his thoughts across and still provide a witty slant to the conversation... for a kid excited to talk to the media, his conversation was focused and articulate

RB takes a lot of targets in the Cardinal offensive system. David Johnson had more catches last season than most #2 receivers around the league. That is not likely to change and now they have Andre Ellington moving to the slot, with T.J. Logan to back him up, presumably. That will become a distinct position for the team, if it isn't already. They want to include Andre, and having used a draft pick on a younger speedier version of him, they have to be adjusting the playbook to include them as well. With Fitz as the possession receiver and a couple of burners on hand to keep defenses from loading the box, along with Gresham, Niklas, and whoever else shows up at TE, there seem to be enough bodies for the targets they can muster. Palmer is another year older, and Bruce seems to be babying him now, so it's likely to be more of a short area passing game so he doesn't have to stand in and take hits.

Arians, enacting a short area passing game? It remains the same offensive plan if not more since DJ can tote the rock. It is called setting up play action for the deep ball. Palmer will get hit, all QBs get hit under Arians' approach. DJ is not your typical short yardage receiver out of the backfield which is apparent on how he runs routes on the second tier of the defense. Nah, it will be the Arians we know and the offense he is noted for

Good read on Williams. Surely would like to see him step up and make an impact this year.

I think you are taking way too much stock in one arrest to come away and think character concerns are a huge issue for Williams. On the flipside, it's silly to say he has special character.

For me he is a blank slate.

Nah, Chad has charisma. That's a life skill and a job skill. Especially since Reddick and Baker seem like such slugs. You need some spark in the dressing room.

Ya, slug is a bit harsh. He doesn't seem nearly as bright and engaging as Williams though. I was most impressed with Chad and T.J. Logan of the rookies.
Robert - Not to denigrate the importance of intellect, articulateness and athletic measurables, but sometimes things like reflexes, ball-location, hitting velocity, leverage, bend, body-position, processing-quickness etc. trump combine #'s, Wunderlics, personal charm etc. when determining whether a youngster will cut it in the bigs.

Well, I think Williams caught about 200 passes over the past two years, so they aren't drafting him purely for public relations benefit. The personality is a bonus.
