Does Adrian Wilson have the skillset to play OLB in the 3-4?

He doesn't have the cover skills to play SS. But he can rush the passer, he can cover in the middle zone area, he can be disruptive.

Now, the sad thing is that Rashad Johnson sucks out loud. But if we had a decent SS back there, could we milk another few years out of Adrian and perhaps bandaid a glaring hole in our defense?

I don't know, I'm trying to be the Anti-Russ Grimm and think outside the box.

Pressuring the QB on safety blitzes does not mean you can line up on a tackle and beat him 1 on 1 consistently. Guys that have rushed the passer well throughout high school and college have trouble adjusting to the position at the NFL level, let alone a guy that's played safety his entire NFL career. Successful DB blitzes are more about surprise and catching the guys in pass protection by surprise.

He can absolutely cover in middle zone. He can cover for a small amount of time and release to over the top help. He can't cover in space at all.

This is all true, but do you think he would be more effective than Joey Porter in this aspect?

No but they can try to play him like the Steelers do Palomalu.

I see the Steelers in this alignment a lot: a 3-4 with Troy in the slot between the ILB and the OLB or the OLB and the CB. I've seen the Cards do this some with Adrian and in a couple of cases it resulted in Yo busting up runs in the backfield.

I don't know how the Steelers adjust the pass coverage with TP up on the corner slot like that though.

yep but not well, He could be great at WIL! but DWASH may be the best in the NFL there soon?
Both can't take the pounding of the SIL in the marathon NFL season. Dwash wore down last year, but knows what to expect this year. Lenon and Walker are God sends!
Hayes was great at his postion, the engine of our SB team. It takes both Paris and Reggie to fill Hayes role over the course of a 16 game season.

Dansby took a SIL pounding and provided WIl coverage, that made him special. Dwash is much better than Dansby in coverage, but can't take that pounding, It is nice to have a DC who understands that.

But Horton's at the big boy table now. His defense is asked to do what no coach in Pittsburg would ever ask them to do ever. Blitz every down as many as 79 plays in a game! Yea Horton needs to have a come to Jesus meeting with Mike Miller.

Whiz has not got a clue, He is still blaming the defense and oline. missed the fact that defense stopped them alot. When did the defense stop them the whole cgame, sheesh the turnovers Whisenstupid!

sadly, he needs be cut next year. otherwise, he'll continue to get older and slower and even more destroyed in coverage because you know Wiz won't bench his ass.

Adrian Wilson is currently one of the worst players in the NFL. He doesn't have the range to play LB but he does have the skillset to play on the bench though.

Get back in the box. I know of no 230Lb outside Lb's in a 3-4. ;)

Just so we know - and have the benefit of your deep research - name a few of the other "worst", he's keeping company with?

Nope...but I will say this, he played pretty decent last week. The coverage on Sidney Rice 1 on 1 was superb but he never looked back at the ball. The coaching staff needs to keep from putting him in those situations though IMO.

I think he would be better there than at Safety.

He may be "only" 230lbs but he is the strongest 230lber in the NFL IMO.

Just in case you want to study an example of Hortons defense that is a smooth well oiled machine! I hate them but they are good at Horton's defense.

Troy P has more quick, speed and thump at SS.
AW has more strong, speed and thump at SS
But yea it is a direct comparison player to player in the same defense. They have different skill sets.

DWASH is much closer and better at Troy P's Skill set and size than AW.
aW would make a great SIL in both defenses. Again would not hold up to dansby like pounding, but neither did DWASH last year.

And If you actually watched the SB loss unlike WHIZ, i wonder if He watched the Srteeler defense lose a SB since then?
I think Whiz, Kolb, Miller and Horton need to watch oir SB loss every week until they learn what WE did wrong and they did right.

But where do our players match up skill set wise, with Pittsburgs depth chart of players. and yes Mcfadden is starting for them! another example of wasted resources and mis managed talent.

who

I thought DWASH was 6' 2" 235 lb undersized SILB? safety/LB hybrid, bigger than Troy P?

or are you talking AW at SIL?

Oh I see AW averages up well with Pitssburg ILB's at 6'3" 230 , DWash 6'2" 230 just a bit taller

but Troy P at SS at 5' 10" 207? I thought he was bigger, clarks the same size at FS!

Rhodes is tall

YES, he has the skill sets
NO, he does not have the size

I'm talking about AW and the subject of the started thread...I think he could play the position on some passing downs but not a full starter through out the game

I say noway he does possess some of the skills needed covering the flat and such, but he can't run with todays TE's or cover in space and he would be manhandled in the run game. There is a reason the OSLB are 260 pounds, athletic as hell, and why they are so hard to find.

next year? yes. he's become a liability on the field and his body is breaking down... as it unfortunately will continue to as he gets older. huge salary, poor production and if he is on the team, no way Wiz has the stones to bench him.

Whisenhunt played in the National Football league for nine seasons and was known for his blocking, he might not make the best choices in certain situations, but one thing he is not lacking is stones. I think if Whisenhunt does not bench someone, it won't be because of that.
