That's the thing with this show, there are so many plot twists available from the fact that literally anyone can be a doll. It gives them a wide variety on where they can go with story arcs and that keeps the show interesting. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with it in Season 2, so far this show has been refreshingly innovative.

I heard from a Joss Whedon fanatic that it's been picked up for another season. Don't know where he heard that, though.

I don't know why people are even worried about it. For a new show in the Friday night slot, it did quite well. I'm almost positive it will get a 2nd season, it's a 3rd that I would worry about depending on Ratings. I just don't see Fox giving up on it this soon. It's a fairly high budget show, they put a lot of work in, and it does well in it's slot.

Let's put it this way, what else does Fox have that they think they can put in that slot and do better? It's almost impossible for a new show to do any better then Dollhouse did in that slot, so unless they have an established show that wants that slot, canceling it wouldn't make much sense.

I don't pay any attention to ratings, so I had no idea if it was doing well in that slot or not. So many on here were all doom & gloom...I thought it wasn't doing as well as they expected.

That's because the overnights were not that spectacular. Actually, what saved the show is the DVR ratings. It has some of the highest DVR ratings in certain demographics.

Fox has a history of fast hooks and I think this is the first time Fox has ever made a decision based on DVR #'s and the potential of a show in a very very long time.

I doubt that DVR numbers had anything to do with it. As a general rule, DVR ratings mean nothing because Advertisers don't buy time on shows that are DVR'ed. People that DVR shows scan through commercials, those shows don't make any money. Terminator was also very highly rated in DVR ratings and it meant nothing for them.

That is the conventional thinking. However, Fox's President of Entertainment (Kevin Reilly) on why Dollhouse was renewed:

"The DVR numbers are a marker for us, so it is a factor, and we did see an uptick in the ratings from a 1.5 to a 2. That was a pattern for us that we liked, betting on Joss, and I think you're going to see it grow next season."

DVR is still not the be all end all for the same reasons you stated above (commercial revenue). However, I have heard that the tide might finally be turning because of advertisement opportunities with sites like Hulu etc. Which means ratings outside of traditional TV might finally be getting their due and have to be looked at. It might not have been the main reason Dollhouse was renewed but appeared to be a factor.

I sure hope that's right, those numbers should be considered in my opinion. It's good to know that someone is finally using that data, good to hear.

I think Joss should bring on his buddy Summer Glau as a new doll for season 2. It isnt like she is doing much of anything anymore.

It sounds to me like someone on the Fox team has learned their lesson with Joss Whedon. If they cut this show, they'd be on tenterhooks worrying that it would piss people off ala Firefly. Good move by Fox.

Nah, no thanks. We already have the stunning leading lady, and already have a good start on another good looking doll with an interesting history (the doc).

:mulli:

I go by the motto that you can never have to many hot chicks. Plus they need to replace the doll that left.

Co-worker/friend of mine said the same thing. He's chomping at the bit for this to happen.

I watched this show once and had no idea who the protagonists and antagonists were. I finally settled on the black guy from Matrix 2 and 3 as being the closest thing to a "good guy" but mostly because he was the leader.

The episode meandered and the turn of the pilot from Serenity was blatantly obvious. Can't say I will watch it again which is sad because I was a huge Serenity fan.

Wow, you watched one episode of an incredibly complicated show, which happened to be very late in the season, and it didn't bring you in? Imagine that :sarcasm:

Incredibly complicated or overly complicated? That's the question that faces this show if it is going to go anywhere. The characters (ie anyone not a doll, which I gather is basically an organic computer waiting for it's programming/personality imprint) desperately need help.

Firefly and Buffy succeeded because the characters were so good. I didn't see any of that in this one and thus I didn't care about the conflict unfolding upon the scene.

While you may have thought your dripping sarcasm was appropriate, the only chance this show has is to expand it's core audience.

Nope. Not an organic computer waiting...real live person waiting for its programming/imprint. You really should give it a go from the beginning. I don't think it's overly complicated. Definitely complicated, but not overly. The character development will take time, just as it did with Buffy. It's definitely getting there.

I hope you are right. I have to admit though I am still watching, because I do believe that I am only an episode away from that click, I don't really like Dollhouse yet--Neither do I dislike it. Dollhouse and I just haven't made a connection yet.

I understand what CS is saying, I have no investment in any of the characters, so it is hard for me to get really drawn into the story.

I don't think Buffy is a good comparison at this point because the characters there were standard high schoolers when it started out, so it automatically had characters to relate to. Remember, that was a while ago, which means we were all a lot younger when that show started. Here you have a show where the core audience is adult, as with any show of this kind, it will take a while to get invested. It happened with Fringe and even Lost--the difference is that they had 22 episodes to get the audience interested, Dollhouse had half that. It's a tall order.

Yeah, I don't really think that a person that's watched a lone, late-season episode is in position to dictate what the show needs to do. You're miffed that you didn't get into it. Sure, I get that, but I think that's probably more your fault than the show's fault. Jumping into the middle of a show like this is never a good idea. Myself and others have watched the show from the beginning, and really do think the characters are compelling, and that the show is riveting.
