Until Luka starts saying he won't play for certain teams. That sinks a players value. AD is coming off being a 2nd Team All NBA & 1st All Defensive team season while being healthy this year putting up 25 & 12 to go with over 3 steals/blocks a game. I know we mock his health and availability but when healthy, he's the best PF in the game and he's been healthy. Maybe bubble wrap is more plentiful in Dallas?

Taking nothing away from Anthony Davis, but Luka is only a 25-year-old superstar.

No one does this type of trade for an aging superstar except a team like the Suns.

Because nobody in their right mind would make AD their prime target.

That is just total BULLCRAP.

He has what - at best 2 good years left?

you got it right, Prox. It amazes me to hear naive and gullible justifications in line with the official spin -- especially in the current environment of rampant deception. But i don't believe it's a conspiracy. Here's my breakdown:

Q: why didn't Luka know?
A: oh, he knew. He obviously demanded a trade specifically targeting the Hollywood lights for him and his bride. He's a master manipulator on the court too. He worked the refs and Booker's head in our playoff series until we melted like butter in the end.

Q: but they could have just screwed up. Cuban isn't a majority owner any more.
A: Cuban would work the angles even if he only had $1 invested. And the Dallas suits are said to be pals with the LA suits.

Q: but Cuban screwed up with Nash too.
A: he just played hard-ball with Nash and lost. But Nash at that time was NO Luka, who, imo, is only 2nd to Nokic in value to any team. Moreover, Cuban is better known for spending on talent, despite the risks, (Kyrie, for one). And it was Cuban that sharked away Luka to begin with (he was speculated to be a big fat risk then too).

Q: but why gamble on Luka's will to stay in condition?
A: are you really going to bet on someone with his ego and drive letting McD's block his path to glory. He's more likely to figure out, Like Mike! how to take full advantage of his passing skills.

Q: didn't Dallas benefit from keeping it quiet?
A: No! They'd benefit greatly from a bidding war -- UNLESS Luka threatened he'd make it public he wouldn't resign and he'd only go to LA. For effect, he could even throw in a threat to play in Europe.

Q: but A.Davis is a great value in return
A: please

I look at people saying this trade should have been nixed like the CP3 to LA trade. Are we kidding. The NBA has a young Luka in LA! The Laker games will be as many national games now as possible. This is the best case scenario for the NBA offices.
and dallas did get a top player in return. why would the league step in? the difference is age and longevity. but that's dallas' problem and they are the ones taking that risk. if this doesn't pay out for them with a title then no one is going to look at this trade as a good one.

But, the silver lining is Kyrie and AD will be gone in 2-3 years. That's a LOT of cap space for the Mavs to rebuild under. Either it works, or they can easily reset.

This could be the Suns storyline as well if they were financially shrewd.

25 year old star or not, he's headed down the Zion path. He'll sell tickets in LA but he won't get banners. Bidding wars get ugly, we saw it first hand with KD. He wanted out of Brooklyn and the Suns wouldn't pay the asking price. No other team swooped in because KD made his intentions known. That's where the Suns screwed up. The Mavs/Lakers avoided any debate and made a deal to avoid that. Dallas wagered their future on now and the Lakers sold high on AD since they aren't doing anything until LeBron is gone. It's a huge deal that will shake up the league but I think it was played right by both sides.

I understand your point of view and I think it makes more sense than the Suns trade for Durant but giving up on a 25-year-old superstar is hard to swallow for a fan outside the organization to understand.

I'm sure the Lakers and Mavericks will agree, but I think Dallas played the hand extremely poorly.

They couldn't even get two first round picks from the Lakers.

it's hard for everyone to understand. that's what makes it the most difficult is Dallas are yielding 7 years and Luka is a lot more beloved in Dallas than AD ever will be, unless AD wins a title. and IMO it isn't only about titles. yes I want dallas to win titles, but I loved watching doncic play. he's a different player and he will be a lot more hyped in LA if they win at the same or greater rate than dallas did with doncic. I actually love AD too and ironically I always thought if Luka could pair with AD it would be a devastating combo.

It's only about A title if you have none. I think you'd be more inclined to agree if Dirk didn't become Superman for a post season run. I imagine you'll feel differently if they make it back to the finals also.

I think this is the new NBA...There's going to be more pickiness over giving a guy $280 million.

and the Answer to that is...

the "new NBA" is giving superstars like Durant and Luka exactly what they want because all they have to do is turn the screws on their team to get it. Though the NBA will benefit from this move, it should indeed step in to prevent this kind of player manipulation spiraling further. And that's another reason Luka made sure his manipulation was hush, hush.

wake up to the modern world, people. We're all being manipulated by the rich and powerful

Q: why give superstars the $280 million or more they want when there's "aprons" involved?
A: they'll just drop another $20 on a the price of jerseys, tickets, beers, and cable subscriptions and you'll pay it

it is about winning a title. that one was a long time ago. they made it to the finals last year and it looked like they were never beating Boston. nothing has really changed since then until last night. this team might be able to beat Boston IDK, still have my doubts, but I also don't know how they stand in the west either if they aren't making 3's. that's the name of the game now. AD is one of the few players in the league right now that can buck that style of play inside. but dallas still needs to be able to shoot the ball.

Really, have you looked at the free agent crop for the next two years?

There is nobody to get excited about at all. Great players don’t get to free agency, unless they are old as hell and still want to be paid like they are young.

People are saying that because the NBA’s reasoning was the Paul trade was an unbalanced trade. It had nothing to do with the other stuff. If that is the standard this fits the bill.

I agree. It just hurts and makes me envious that you're in a position to say it's not only about titles like you did. Can't say that about your team until there's at least one banner in the rafters.

I think this is the new NBA. Teams have watched the Suns and other teams over the Second Apron, and they want to be flexible. At least stay in the first apron if they go over. There's going to be more pickiness over giving a guy $280 million.
Why would that happen when they just signed the giant new tv deals which means the cap is going up?

oh ok, and this isn't aimed at you, but that year was the ultimate proof that the game is not rigged. so when all the rigged people out there are feeling down in the dumps and thinking up ways to explain their theories, I suggest to review that 2011 finals run by dirk.

I understand what you are saying. and it's hard for me to make sense of what happened because I am a doncic fan and didn't expect this to happen. when I take the emotion out of it I do understand why dallas would make the trade, but it's going to take a long time getting used to it.

There it is, Luka was not asking for a trade or demanding lakers or else. - that is all spin.

Mavs are so dumb they don’t even deny it.

Q: but isn't Luka at risk of going down the "Zion path?"
A: it's not like AD is known as the league's "Iron Man." He's got one of the worst health reps in the league.

I wonder if this means the Lakers go full blow up and LeBron is next.

If so, we might as well try to win the old folks title and throw Bradley Beal (his contract will run out just in time for 2027 FA), all of our picks and... hell... throw Dunn in too.

LeBron/KD/Book - that would just kinda be hilarious/fascinating to see on the court.
