Doucet will likely get cut, IMO.

Doucet doesnt have much experience in clutch situations at the pro level. The only thing he has proven is that he cant stay healthy. Long is making things tough on WRs wanting to make this roster.

Seems like whoever gets the 5th or 6th spot is going to be just as good as anyone's #3 receiver in the NFL

This staff has my full trust when it comes to evaluating receivers, for obvious reasons, so I'll be happy with either of them. My preference is Doucet, but having never watched a training camp, my evaluation of Long is pretty limited. My biggest concern is getting too hyped over meaningless games. Two preseasons ago, I thought this team would rue the day they released Matt Trannon. But if Whis & co decide Long's the guy, I'll be confident it's what's best for the team.

Long was playing with the first string against the Chargers first string D last night. That's what got me to thinking he has a leg up on Doucet right now.

You're right. I should have said he hasn't produced against first string defenders, although he did have some nice blocks last night.

It probably comes down to special teams. That's probably why Whis says it depends on what Long does on special teams. If he can contribute in some way in the 'transition game' he's got a legitimate shot IMO.

Early really needs to find a way to stay healthy.

Wow, you think the MVP of the NCAA Nat'l Championship team that featured 3 top 10 picks has more potential than the scrawny kid who couldn't even start in college without help from other players' injuries? Bold call there bud.

I think this guy I saw on a strongman competition on espn 12 last night could likely beat me in an arm wrestling contest.

thats why i said 'imo'

I get the feeling the hidden rationale for the willingness to cut Doucet has more with "I'm Really Pulling for Lance Long" sentiment than it has to do with Early.

I think the decision on who stays and goes will be more complicated than that:

1. How many wideouts do we keep: 5? 6? (ROTB says "7").

2. Will we keep receivers purely on "how they rank vs. one another?" Or will it have more to do with the mix of wideouts we have available and what roles Wiz expects them to play? Let's assume for a moment that Fitz, Q, Breaston and Urban lock up the top 4 spots. Breaston is the closest we have to a "burner." The other three are big possession types. What roles does Wiz expect from the final 2 spots?

Does he want another burner?

How can each of the likely "finalists" (Morey, Doucet, Long, O Jones) best be described: A big possession guy? A waterbug? A burner? A gritty veteran?

How important does Wiz value veteran leadership and versatility - i.e. does he feel Morey's value transcends the physical talent of the other three guys enough to make him expendible?

3. Injuries may help sort out the field. (Garvin -appears to have already been left behind).

My point - It may not be a question of Long vs. Doucet. We could conceivably keep both and jettison Morey. Or there's the remotest possibility we could keep all three. And there's always the possiblity of a late trade with KC if the right Chiefs player was available.

Note - One big "plus" for Doucet was the way he took the hit Sat. night and, two plays later, bounced back to make a pretty sideline catch. And my hunch is that, among those four players, Doucet may have the most pure speed and explosion - and we could use more of that.

Note #2 - I love Long too. He reminds me of Ricky Proehl.

That sucks because I just bought a Doucet autographed ball at a charity auction. I guess I overpayed.

Branch and Welker aren't that fast. I think top-speed is overrated. WRs need to be good route runners and QUICK (vs FAST). IF you're playing WR in the NFL, you're likely plenty fast enough.

JMHO

(And I'd rather have Doucet on the team than Long...I'm jus' sayin').

Branch is more quick than fast. Welker is faster than people think, but probably also more quick than fast. It took 2 years of people thinking they could cover him with a LB or safety before they finally believed they couldn't.

Generally speaking small WR's survive on quickness like most of that list.

My primary point is Long has never been even remotely a big play guy, his chance to stick is because he runs routes, has good hands, and can they think he can help on special teams.

Welker might not be "fast" but he definitely meets your definition of quick. His short range speed and opening burst is very, very good. I haven't seen much of Branch, but he's not slow. Smith/Harrison/Jackson all have (or had in Marvin's case) elite speed in every aspect of the word, they have the burst, they have the top end, and they all (especially Marvin) can run routes. That's why Desean was a top rookie WR, I thought he would be a bust personally but he practiced his route running throughout the offseason with Rice and it paid off. Galloway..stupid fast.

Regarding Jackson practicing with Rice probably helped him but Jackson has always been a guy who could run routes. Jackson's older brother played WR briefly in the NFL and he's been DeSean's personal coach for years.

One of the first things Tedford said when Jackson arrived at Cal is how abnormal it was that the best route runner on the team was a true freshman, and also the fastest player.

I thought his lack of size would hurt him, at Cal 2 years in a row he got lit up in the USC game and was quiet the rest of the game. But he seems to have figured out so far how to be a real threat without taking the big hits too much. He is no Boldin of course, but he will go over the middle now and then.

Jackson reminds me a lot of former Cardinal great Mel Gray.

Going to be tough for Long because the Cards already have a guy like him running #4 in Urban.

You know I'd like to see our top 4 WR's in a say 50 yard race. I'm not convinced Urban wouldn't win the race. He doesn't look fast the way he runs, but he has a real knack of getting open deep. I realize he's facing the weaker cover CB or safety all the time but I get the impression he's faster than either Boldin or Fitz and is closer to Breaston than we think?

I think that's why Urban stuck in the NFL despite the known tendency to drop balls. I think people liked the size/speed ratio and figured if he can learn to catch the ball he'll be pretty intriguing.

Next year, or this year? I'd hate to see you lose it all on a technicality.

This year, of course. 2009 Arizona Cardinals, Morey will be on this team.

It's not 'this' year to me until the regular season.....
