Final BA Hot Sheet for the year:

Hot - Cyle Hankerd (#5)

"Stop me if you've heard this one before. Recent draftee, corner outfielder from a high-profile college, drafted by the Diamondbacks early, has a ridiculous debut season. Hankerd hit eight homers in 18 Cal League games and had a gaudy 1.020 OPS and 12 homers in 281 at-bats in his pro debut. Let's see if he can progress better than 2004 draftee Jon Zeringue, who had a similarly impressive debut that season in Lancaster (.335/.374/.552, 10 homers in 230 at-bats)."

Honorable Mention - Carlos Gonzalez

"Gonzalez struggled early into his promotion from the California League to Double-A, and was still feeling the after-effects of being hit in the neck with a pitch a week before he was called up. The sting of getting hit lingered through his first several weeks with the Smokies, as Gonzalez struggled with his timing and what he said felt like a 'pinched nerve' in his neck. But as his comfort level increased, so did his performance. After starting out in a 3-for-23 slump, Gonzalez's final week looked more like the player everyone expects: .381 with a pair of homers in 21 at-bats."

Carlos is too good a player to be in a slump for such a long period of time. I also believe we could be seeing him in Phoenix sometime late next year. I am looking forward to watching him in spring training.

Sidewinders win 4-2 and take a two game to none lead. Nippert pitched a strong game giving up two unearned runs and Koplove came in the 9th to record the last two outs for the save.

"Tucson, champion of the Pacific Coast League's South Division with a 91-53 regular-season mark, edged Salt Lake City on Wednesday night, 4-3, in 11 innings, overcoming a three-run deficit in the first game of the PCL playoffs.

Class A South Bend fell, 4-3, to the Lansing Lugnuts in Wednesday's first game of a three-game Midwest League series.
Highly touted prospect Justin Upton collected a home run, a triple and a pair of RBIs in the losing effort.

Rookie ball's Missoula will begin postseason play on Friday. The Osprey, from the Pioneer League's Northern Division, went 23-14 in the second half of the season."

Nippert looked amazing tonight. He was dominate with 8 strike outs. If the Sidewinders can win one of the next three games in Salt Lake the Championship series will start Tuesday at Tucson Electric Park.

I would like to see Nippert come up and contribute next year. Hopefully Tucson can win tomorrow too!

Humidity helps
Nippert takes advantage of weather in win
By Patrick Finley
Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.08.2006
Rain is good news for Dustin Nippert. His curveball dances and darts like birds in a lightning storm.
It's the humidity — the Sidewinders pitcher can grip the ball better, and the heavier air gives his pitches more bite, he said.
"Pray for the monsoon," he joked.
So when Nippert's wife awoke at 6 a.m. Thursday to the sound of pouring rain, it was good news.
Twelve hours later, the 6-foot-8-inch right-hander did the weather justice.
Allowing three hits and two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings, Nippert delivered the Sidewinders a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of the PCL Pacific Conference series before 5,513 fans at Tucson Electric Park.
The Sidewinders have a 2-0 lead in the series and travel today to Salt Lake City, where they would clinch the series by defeating the Bees. Game time is 6 p.m.
At first, Nippert said he thought Thursday's game would be postponed; he was calling teammates all morning, after hearing the game might be called from his twin brother, Derik, a pitcher rehabbing in Tucson.
It was not until an hour before Thursday's game that the teams knew they would play. From 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., about a dozen Sidewinders officials kicked and prodded the soggy infield dirt — the result of a brutal morning storm and the fact the tarp was put on only after the rain had begun. A dump truck pushed around dirt on the warning tracks.
"It's difficult for everybody, especially the starting pitchers," said manager Chip Hale, who raced around the bases to test the dirt. "We didn't know until the last second."
Nippert did not change his routine — "You'd rather be overprepared than under-prepared," he said — but the result was extraordinary.
"He really stepped up and was a leader tonight," Hale said.
He was spotted two first-inning runs after Bees errors. After Alberto Callaspo led off with a walk, Jon Weber bunted back to Bees pitcher Dustin Moseley. His throw to first was high and up the line, and Callaspo motored to third.
Scott Hairston chopped a sure double-play ball to third baseman Dallas McPherson, but a bad bounce glanced off him as Callaspo scored. The next batter, Chris Carter, bounced into a double play.
The Winders scored without so much as getting a hit.
Tucson went up 4-0 in the sixth inning when Weber singled and Hairston doubled to send him to third. Weber trotted home on a wild pitch, and Hairston came in on a Brian Barden sacrifice fly.
Nippert plowed through the Bees, retiring 14 straight from the third to the seventh innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
"I felt the rain helped out a lot with the humidity for my curveball," said the West Virginia alum. "It's usually a little flat in the dry air. It's weird."
Nippert ran into trouble in the eighth when Jason Aspito walked after catcher Juan Brito dropped a foul pop-up. Two singles and one out later, he was taken out of the game. Both his runs were unearned.
"You can tell by the look in his eye he was ready to go," Hairston said. "We needed that from him. He threw like himself today."
Three Sidewinders relievers — Jeff Bajenaru, Bill White and Mike Koplove — combined for a perfect 1 1/2 innings to close out the Bees.
Had the game not been played, the Sidewinders would have been forced to play up to four games in Salt Lake, including a Saturday doubleheader.
Now, they can clinch tonight.
That's the key, Nippert said. Humidity is good for a starting pitcher; rainouts, not so much.
"A little bit of rain," he chuckled. "But not too much rain."

"Undefeated and defeated: With a 4-2 win over Salt Lake on Thursday night, Triple-A Tucson improved to 2-0 to begin the Pacific Coast League playoffs. The best-of-five series could conclude on Friday, as Game 3 is set for 7 p.m. MST. Class A South Bend was eliminated from the playoffs, being swept by the Lansing Lugnuts with a 4-3 loss on Thursday. The Silver Hawks gave up four runs in the opening inning and could not recover."

So the Sidewinders will play the Express (Round Rock - sorry Dback Jon :() in a five-game series starting tomorrow evening. Good luck to the "baby" snakes.

My questions are, Why is the format 2-3? (the answer most likely is travel costs) and more importantly, Why does the Express get the home-field advantage (the last three games, as necessary)? That is wierd, to me, as the Sidewinders were the better team record-wise and head-to-head (run differential of +1 after splitting the only series with the Express).

I asked the same thing and the way that it was explained to me is that it rotates each year between the Pacific conference winner hosting and the American Conference hosting due to the travel plan facts. The travel plans are such a big deal because both teams fly commercial airlines and they can't afford to wait to see who has the best record. Apparently this is the easiest way for the league to handle things according to people in the know.

"Tucson 10, Salt Lake 8 (Tucson won series 3-1)

The Sidewinders advanced to the PCL finals Saturday on the strength of a seven-run second inning. Right fielder Robby Hammock had the big hit with a three-run double, and Tucson pitching was just good enough for a 10-8 win.

Missoula 10, Billings 2 (Missoula won series 2-0)

Missoula won the series opener when John Hester hit a grand slam off of Terrell Young in the eighth to give the Osprey a 6-4 win. On Saturday night, Missoula claimed the division title with a much easier victory, as Missoula picked up four runs in the first and Jordan Norberto and Hector Amriz shut down the Mustangs win."

I listened to Ryan Radke and he does a very good job. I would not be surprised to see him get a major league job in the future.
I am biased since I work for him but I've sat next to him for every home game and love listening to him. He is a solid guy too.

Thanks for the explanation. Just another part of being in the minor leagues...

That was one of the greatest games I've witnessed live. It has been a crazy season and yet another come from behind win.

"Down on the farm: Both Triple-A Tucson and rookie-level Missoula won the opening game of their respective league championship series on Tuesday night. The Sidewinders defeated Round Rock, 3-1, in the best-of-five Pacific Coast League Championship Series, while the Osprey beat Idaho Falls, 4-0, in the best-of-three Pioneer League Championship set.
Tucson has had to make its postseason run without big-name prospects such as Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin, Miguel Montero and Chris Young.
"I think most teams have to deal with that. In September, you're going to lose some of your guys," Melvin said. "The big-league team's always going to be the priority. They've had a lot of guys come up here, and what they've continued to accomplish is very impressive. You have to tip your hat to everybody down there, [Tucson manager] Chip [Hale] and the coaches and the players, too. It seems like different guys have really stepped up."
Both teams duel in Game 2 on Wednesday night."
