I had several PM's asking me to get my scout friends take on our draft. I got the chance to talk him for about an hour yesterday at my mother in-laws and will pass on the generalities of what he thought about our draft and a couple other things. Btw, nothing earth shattering at all.

DJ Humphries: Really liked the pick and think's he has top tier LT potential. Thinks he very young and immature but doesn't see it as an issue. Humphries went about where he thought he would go.

Markus Golden: Thought he was overdrafted. They had a 4-5 round grade on him. However, Golden was not a good scheme fit for them and he may be a nice scheme fit for the Cards.

David Johnson: another good pick. He likes his size, speed, and attitude. Says he has a chance to be a good one.

Rodney Gunter: Okay, here's where the pitch forks are going to come out. He didn't like this pick at all. Gunter was one the guys he personally graded and thought he'd never be more than a backup at best. It's just one guy's opinion and, obviously SF reportedly was thinking high enough of him to take him in round 4, but he did not have a very high grade on him. But not all scouts agree on players so, maybe he's got this one wrong.

Shaquille Riddick: we got interrupted about this point and didn't really get a chance to answer.

Gerald Christian: Said it was an awful TE class overall and would not have taken one early. He likes Christian and thinks he may develop more into a H-back type of player.

Some other stuff:
I asked who they were considering instead of Fowler(he won't admit it but I know Fowler wasn't his top choice) and they were, not surprisingly, considering Amari Cooper, Leonard Williams, or a trade back and taking Kevin White.

Thinks my guy, Shane Ray, was a steal at 23.

Guys getting picked the spot before you draft happens quite a bit( I asked because of Dupree and Ray going right before the Cards and Birdman's report of Abdullah being there, and getting picked right in front of Cards in round 2, for the Cards to trade him for AP). He said that happens often, even in the later rounds, and happened to them in round 3. They targeted the OG from Utah but he went the pick prior, so they took Cann. He said teams often hear things about what other teams are doing/thinking.

I asked if he had heard any rumbling or rumors about the Cards acquiring AP.
Answer: no.

He really likes Keim but there is a FO member that he is not a big fan of.

Next year's QB class is not very good. He thinks a kid from ND St. is as good as anyone. If Cardale Jones starts he has a chance at the top QB spot but he may not even start. So, who knows.

Logan Thomas: He's not big fan of his but knows other scouts that absolutely love him. He's too inaccurate for his liking.

Selfishly hopes Tom Brady gets suspended 4 games because they play NE early.

That's about all I can remember.

If this is your Jags scout friend, than obviously the FO is Terry Mcdonough.

Its not fair to judge a guy based on his team. Keim was a FO guy with the Rod Graves poo-cardinals for years.

So you cant just assume everybody associated with the regime is also terrible.

However...his brother is doing a bang up job destroying the Phx Suns. So...

Ryan is his brother? Was wondering if there was a connection.

I totally get his opinion on Gunter but so did Buckner have a similar view till he drove out to the middle of nowhere and worked him out personally. Because there really are so many players who are suppose to have the traits to play in the NFL (the diamond in the rough dream) from an obscure area that never do work out, a skeptical Buckner even mentioned going there looking for every reason he could to state the kid was just another one of those stories with no worth. In the end, he could not find a reason to disbelieve the kid and the rest of the staff fell in love with the kid... I hope they are right :)

This. I'm looking for something big from this guy.

Some people have that moment in their life they reflect on when they are old which makes up the golden tale they cannot stop talking about with pride that nieces and nephews eventually wish they would shut up about and this might be Buckner's haha. It is because of respected people in their field like this Jaguar scout which give meaning to Buckner's decision if Buckner is right about this Gunter kid. "Everyone said the kid was nothing special but then after I drove down this deserted road, in a town which did not even have a population sign, to see for myself if this kid was legit that I stumbled upon something special..." enter the Disney music for the film on Gunter and Buckner's narration in a tone reminiscent of James Earl Jones lol

i think buckner has the experience at high level that could have a better knowledge of football then all scouts put togheter.
if he saw something that impressed him,it was the right choice and i trust him more then anybody
he played and trained worked out with many great players like kris jenkins and julius peppers

I would guess that FO member is Terry McDonough, since he was a former Jacksonville executive with a spotty record.

My guess as well.

Interestingly McDonough is the guy who identified and really pushed hard for Gunter. So I guess we have a measuring stick for that pick as Cbus's friend hated that pick.

Let's remember that Terry McDonough's Jaguars have a long history of drafting nobodies from nowhere state, including fairly high in the draft:

2013 1 1 2 2 Luke Joeckel T Texas A&M
2 2 1 33 John Cyprien DB Florida International
3 3 2 64 Dwayne Gratz DB Connecticut
4 4 4 101 Ace Sanders WR South Carolina
5 5 2 135 Denard Robinson WR Michigan
6 6 1 169 Josh Evans DB Florida
7 7 2 208 Jeremy Harris DB New Mexico State
8 7 4 210 Demetrius McCray DB Appalachian State
2012 1 1 5 5 Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State
2 2 6 38 Andre Branch DE Clemson
3 3 7 70 Bryan Anger P California
4 5 7 142 Brandon Marshall LB Nevada
5 6 6 176 Mike Harris DB Florida State
6 7 21 228 Jeris Pendleton DT Ashland
2011 1 1 10 10 Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri
2 3 12 76 William Rackley G Lehigh - started 25 games over three seasons before being cut.
3 4 17 114 Cecil Shorts WR Mount Union - solid player
4 4 24 121 Chris Prosinski DB Wyoming - started 9 games over three seasons and contributed on special teams

5 5 16 147 Rod Isaac DB Middle Tennessee State - Appeared in 3 games as a rookie and disappeared forever

2010 1 1 10 10 Tyson Alualu DE California
2 3 10 74 D'Anthony Smith DT Louisiana Tech - lasted 2 seasons and 18 starts for the Jags before getting cut. Spent time with Seattle and Detroit
3 5 12 143 Larry Hart DE Central Arkansas
4 5 22 153 Austen Lane DE Murray State
5 6 11 180 Deji Karim RB Southern Illinois
6 6 34 203 Scotty McGee DB James Madison

The bold names are from nowhere programs. The underlined guys are more important because they were higher picks whom you depend upon to become solid roster guys--special teamers and adequate starters. The Gerald Hayeses of the NFL.

If Fowler was gone Jags were set to take Williams.

I tracked down a coach whose team played Gunter and he said the kid was the best defensive player they played all year. No scout really saw much of him, so he's a gamble but so is most of day 3. This guy might surprise. The coach I talked to is a comer who will move up.

Well that is at least promising. Thanks for tracking down some info on him!
