You missed my point. The $12 million (over two years, 6 a year) is what he WILL get from us if we pick up his option by Oct 31. If we did not do it for Len, I cannot see doing it for Bender.
The bright side of not picking up his option is that we will have $6 million more to work with in free agency next summer. He also could be valuable as a $6 million expiring in a trade. If we decline his rookie option and then trade him as an expiring, we technically are not eating into the cap space we had planned for next summer anyway.
Based upon his present production, this is the more likely scenario. This decision has probably already been made. Bender would have to make dramatic changes in a very short period of time to get the Suns to pick up his option.
