The All-Underrated Team

SF: Jared Dudley, Phoenix
Dudley is one of the smartest players in the league, and now that he's on a winning team in Phoenix, he's starting to garner attention for it. Although he has some physical limitations thanks to a somewhat chunky build, he's a good outside shooter (37.8 percent on 3-pointers for his career) and an excellent rebounder for his size.
What's given him an additional boost this season, however, is his newfound defensive nastiness. He's harassing 3s and smaller 4s with his physicality and willingness to take charges, making him an important cog in Phoenix's surprising early success.

When Dudley brings his best defense along with his three point shooting, the Suns can be tough. I didn't like Bruce Bowen but the comparison of Dudley to Bowen is looking more applicable. However, Dudley appears to be a more hustle version of Bowen without the negatives.

If you listen to Bruce speak it's difficult to not respect the man and I can't tell you how many times through the years his interviews have made me question my impressions of him as a player. But everytime I would soften on him I'd watch him play and see him once again slide his foot underneath an elevated player. It's tough to reconcile his words to his deeds. So, like you, I appreciate Dudley's growth but really hope he doesn't choose to mimic the negative aspects of Bowen's game.

I heart Chris Dudley. I hope he remains a Sun for the better part of his career. Every winning team needs a guy like Duds!

Defensive monster? Wow. Now we're going too far. Rodman was a defensive monster. Bobby Jones was a defensive monster. Tim Duncan is a defensive monster. Dudley's defensive impact on the game ... not even half of that.

Yep. He's on his way there. Give him some time.

And I don't consider Duncan a defensive monster even in his heyday.

Okay, so maybe defensive monster is a bit strong but I do think he's quickly becoming the consummate role player. He's just always where he needs to be and influences a lot of the action when he's on the court. I don't know if he can ever be more than a great role player but as a throw-in to the Richardson trade he's quite a steal IMO.

In a van...down by the river.
It's nice to see Duds getting some props nationally,i really like his competitive,no BS nature coupled with his intelligence.
I'd still like to see more capable defensive players on this team become the rule rather than the exception.

LOL @ Chris Dudley. I'll never forget that unbelievably awkward form he had when shooting free throws....the dude did have some very good years(with Portland) as a strong rebounder, shot blocker and post defender though(long before he came to the SUNS of course).
Here's a classic Chris Dudley moment: Go to 1:12

"Despite his chunky build?"

Is he talking about him as a basketball player or a boyfriend?

O'Neal is a turd. I'm glad he's gone.

YOu are right. Total offensive foul on Oneal in that vid. He should have gotten a tech too. How did they let him get away with just pushing his defender all over like that. I agree with what Dudley said.

I agree to an extent. Though Dudley himself says that he plays a little dirty. There's a couple articles where he even talks about hitting players here or there to disrupt their shots or rhythm. I know it's all a part of defense at the NBA level, but lets not crown him a saint. He's just dirty enough to get the job done thankfully, and Bown he is not. He's just not a boy scout either.
