I'm not getting the hate.

The Birthday Cake was something all of the guys in the contest could have probably done. It was about innovation though. That's a pretty creative idea for a dunk.

Also, Howard not touching the rim made the dunk even better. He soared above it! I've never seen anyone mix athleticism, power, and aerial height like him in the Dunk Contest before. The Superman dunk was a great, fun dunk.

nba.com says refs on the court make the deciding factor on when the dunk attempt is complete. So if they rule it's a dunk, it's a dunk.

Howard's was a dunk, he threw it down. That's the essense of a dunk. It would have taken away from it if he had touched the rim. Youre going to see that more in the future. Guys might not be able to move the rim to 12 feet, they will just have to throw it down from that high.

and it wasn't like he couldn't dunk it the traditional way. .

that's just wrong. rewatch it. he comes down almost immediately after throwing it through the hoop. no way he reaches the rim on that attempt.

and i agree with those amazed at the tap dunk. that was incredible. you watch that in slow motion and watch what he does as he hangs there . . . whew.

Not to mention where that ball came from...that tap dunk was ridiculous. Abomb didn't see what happened when it was live and I lost my ish. I rewound it live to see if he'd catch it before the slo-mo replays.

Not even close. The showmen ship was great. However, look at the replay. He didn't even really dunk. He threw the ball in the basket. If he had actually dunked it touching the rim that would have been different.

Yeah it wasnt even a dunk. I still prefer the jordan/nique contests, and Dr. J dunking from the stripe with a windmill. Heck David thompson dunked better than these guys. Howard is a great big man dunker though.

yup, the elevation on that pseudo dunk was good but not great. Howard is very long, I expect to see more elevation for a great dunk.

he threw it that way on purpose because it made the dunk more difficult.

No he didn't. He "threw" it through because he realized he wasn't going to get there. He would have really "dunked" it had he got there. Supposedly, he was dunking it when he practiced it.

was he still taking off from so far out in the practice? if so, that would have been one of the most amazing dunks i've ever seen. i mean, he took off from a FAAAAR ways away.

by the dictionary it was a dunk. and it wasn't like he couldn't dunk it the traditional way. he threw it that way on purpose because it made the dunk more difficult.

He threw it that way because he was to far from the hoop to dunk it the traditional way.

Don't forget that his teammate threw the pass from out of bounds and over the back of the backboard. I think the pass went farther out than they planned so he had to take off sooner.

Also, Superman isn't black. And that cape didn't look regulation to me.

:lame:, uncalled for and the insinuation is insulting.

Oh come now, were you not entertained? If watching TNT's All-Star Weekend provided you with some nice entertainment for a few hours, then it did its job. Not everybody takes the contests seriously enough to subject them to this much scrutiny. Unless it's Gerald Green showing the world his pissy-face in the wake of the thoroughly-entertaining-though-not-technically-difficult Superman Dunk, that is. :D

P.S. I'll go on record as saying that dunking in your socks is not all that difficult. I did it myself in my playing days. Now, not falling on your butt after you jump, that's a different matter... ;)

The more I see the dunk, the more I think that's actually exactly what he wanted to do. Like he was flying by and just threw it through. He didn't want to touch the rim, because Superman wouldn't.

Howard said as much on ESPN Radio this morning. "Dunking it through the way I did, would really show how far out I jumped."

If his last foot left the ground before or at the FT line AND his hand touched the rim on the dunk, he gets a "Dr. J slam approval". Since Dr J. was 6'7" and with shorter arms, it says he doesnt jump/hang as well as the Doctor did. Nothing to be ashamed of there, very few ever did. Frankly, big guys dont jump as well as the guys in the 6'-6'7" range, but howard is a really good jumper for a big guy. When I see howard with his head and shoulders above the rim, its not nearly as impressive as when David thompson(6'4") elevated to where half his body was above the rim and dunked by punching the ball through the rim while cradled in his arm at the elbow. But you know Dwight is still a complete stud even if he isnt the greatest dunker of all.

It's hard to watch the dunk contest when I watch guys do these:

Air Up There
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TLmuO6hPDjs

540 (SICK 5'9 Dunker...just incredible)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BPFfSO8xozI

And of course...the 720 Dunk:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mt001pBcwjM

http://youtube.com/watch?v=0ovsDlCjRs0&feature=related

That "TeamFlightBrothers" group sent in a video to Rudy Gay, and I believe he even mentioned them in an ESPN spot that somebody also uploaded to YouTube.

Those guys are all impressive leapers, but any NBA player would humiliate them on the court. There are plenty of other aspects to the game other than just jumping really high and throwing the ball through the basket.

Disclaimer: Upon further reflection, it's possible that I'm just sulking--that I'm just old and bitter and jealous. I'm 6'5", and even when I was playing in college, I never had anything close to hops like that. Not even close. Dunk the ball? Sure. Win a dunk contest? Absolutely not. :( At least people with 4 foot verticals are the exception rather than the rule.

Hands down.....720 dunk would be sickest dunk ever in NBA dunk contest unless someone could launch before the free throw line and throw it down. That Dunk is simply sick!!!
