If his last foot left the ground before or at the FT line AND his hand touched the rim on the dunk, he gets a "Dr. J slam approval". Since Dr J. was 6'7" and with shorter arms, it says he doesnt jump/hang as well as the Doctor did. Nothing to be ashamed of there, very few ever did. Frankly, big guys dont jump as well as the guys in the 6'-6'7" range, but howard is a really good jumper for a big guy. When I see howard with his head and shoulders above the rim, its not nearly as impressive as when David thompson(6'4") elevated to where half his body was above the rim and dunked by punching the ball through the rim while cradled in his arm at the elbow. But you know Dwight is still a complete stud even if he isnt the greatest dunker of all.

Howard jumped off 2 feet Dr. J jumped off 1.

After watching the replay several times, howard was about 1 meter past the foul line. Anyone who thinks Howard has even near the hops of Dr. J, VC, MJ, Nique, or any number of swing leapers needs to leave the bar, go home and sober up. NBA TV was hilarious last night, after greg antony and a few other gushed about howard, jalen rose commented: when spudd web won the contest, he wont it because no one could believe such a small guy could do that. Then he went on to say that "big guys just arent as good dunkers as swings, and that dwight howard won because no one could believe that a 6'11" guys could do that". Being that tall is a handicap, like in golf. After that the others guys looked a little embarassed and said the cape and all were really needed in the contest ot save it. Comparing Howard to Dr J is hilarious, not right, not fair to dwight. Delusions have many forms and anyone who thinks dwights dunks were better than gerald greens is under some delusions. Still dwight is a great player, dunking isnt his forte anyway.

???

He leads the league in dunks by a wide margin.

So did shaq when he was a laker, didnt mean he was the best dunker in the NBA, just the best at controlling area/ absorbing contact around the rim. Damn, so when was the most prolific dunker the most athletic or impressive one, when? Have you ever even played ball?

Dont be putting your facts on us!

So then by your "facts" shaq was the best dunker in NBA history. Wonder why he never won the contest? Would he have won if he entered? Gee you guys are incredible. Does this mean the best shooter in NBA history made the most shots(jabbar). Nice logic guys!

How can someone lead the league in dunks, but not have it be there forte?

You should probably just clarify your statement instead of flying off the handle. That would be nice.

Here, let me do it for you.

"jaw dropping, complicated dunks aren't his forte."

However, just dunking is indeed his forte.

In a van...down by the river.
For me, i just can't get as excited about a dunk if the guy is over say....6' 8" anymore. The lift & the gravity defying dunks were awe inspiring to me. I realize that guys have to become more & more creative every year, and the big guys can offer the power that the little guys can't, but personally i love watching the 5' 7" thru 6' 6" dudes go up & throw it down.
Spud Webb's year was amazing.

Howard said as much on ESPN Radio this morning. "Dunking it through the way I did, would really show how far out I jumped."

Of course he said that. Would you expect anything less form him honestly?

Are you an english teacher? Dunking is understood an an art an athletic undertaking in dunk contests. You can twist it anyway you like, but your (hopefully) feigned ignorance is revealing. nah dunking isnt his forte, defense(including rebounding) is, just ask his coach. Howards offensive game is not good enough to be an all star, but his defense is.

It would be "nice" if you would use just a little intelligence to prevent the need from spelling everything out for you, just a little.

Dunking is his forte. Just look at the stats.

Do you know what forte means? It isn't something he plays pirate in...it is his strong point...leading the league in any category means you are damn good at it...that would be a strong point. BTW, he doesn't just "dunk" either, he throws it down.

Cosigning, but also pointing out that Howard also doesn't just tap shots in the air, he swats them with authority, and doesn't just clutch loose basketballs, but tears down rebounds. He's the most impressive center I've seen since Hakeem before he perfected his shooting stroke, and that is VERY high praise. If he develops some solid pivot moves and a serviceable 15-foot jumper, Howard is going to be a terror in the league for years to come, dunker or no.

Agreed. And I'll add that he's twenty-freaking-two.

Beastly.
