So last July I got a Discover Card and have slowly been switching everything from VISA to Discover. 2 months ago I had 3 items on my Visa bill, one a charge from Earthlink that puzzled me since I don't have Earthlink. After several calls I got them to say it was a DSL account that had zero activity, should have been closed, and they'd figure out the amount to credit me. On hold 5 minutes, amount is just over $470 bucks! Never had DSL with them, wasn't clear what the problem was but since they were crediting me, that's fine. 2 months later, no credit. I was on the phone with a guy from Bangalore last week and told him I was fed up, in fact while I thought I was on hold I was venting to my girlfriend and he apparently heard the whole rant.

Anyhow what he says is when we moved to our current place, I signed up for Earthlink DSL online, gave all my CC info, and 2 days later they told me DSL wasn't available, too far from CO, and instead of cancelling the order, they signed me up for dialup. Because my visa statement was always 2 pages, I was too lazy and never noticed the damn charge on there until I moved everything to discover and saw the charge on VISA.

So Friday night they call me and say since you're an existing customer, we have a great offer for you, and I cut the person off and say "i'm not an existing customer, I'm someone you owe $470 to, I'm an irate customer, and there is no way in hell I will ever sign up for any service with Earthlink.

She said she'd make a note in my file and politely said goodbye.

Still waiting for the credit to my card. Moral of the story, always check every charge on your statement, I know 3 other people that were being billed by Earthlink for similar reasons, apparently this is quite common and not just Earthlink.

Have you filed a reg E claim with your credit card company? I've worked on the consumer side of banking in the past and this was a pretty standard operation. It's been 10 years and things may have changed but we were able to give provisional credit until the investigation was complete

I've been fighting with earthlink for a month - I came into a new job and found out that we were paying earthlink for 100+ dialup accounts at $25 a peice per month, and NONE were being used. I got them all cancelled mid month, and they kept saying they were going to credit me for half the month (well over $1000) but they never do so. I keep getting invoices.

Wow.

Wow.

My girlfriend's brother in law knows someone who works at Earthlink. Apparently it's not totally accidental. They can claim all that as revenue and it helps to boost their earnings which looks good to Wall Street. So they bill and bill knowing full well the accounts are dead and they try to wait you out on the credits.

Still no credit, I've already informed Visa to cut them off from auto billing me each month. I'm on hold with Earthlink again right now going to demand to speak to a supervisor again.

this time they promised me the credit by Friday. If it's not there by then, I will contact Visa and see if they can help. What bugged me is knowing I was going to have about $470 in credit on my account, I charged 2 things to my Visa instead of Discover, knowing I wouldn't have to pay out of pocket to pay for it. Since the credit never came, I did in fact wind up writing a check to cover the balance. had I known that upfront, it would have been on my Discover where i get cash back bonus.

Again, Earthlink sucks.

So did I. I used to work there before the Mindspring merger and it went from being a great company to work for, to hating going to work every morning.

They did buy kegs so we could drink at work every couple of months though....

To update they did in fact get me the credit, not by Friday, took 4 more days, but they did finally credit me.
