6. Melvin Ely, Charlotte: It's very difficult for quality young big men to be had for cheap, but that's the situation here. Ely is waiting on a qualifying offer that would keep him with the Bobcats, but the Spurs had an interest in him earlier this offseason, and the Nets are thought to be currently pondering acquiring him in a sign-and-trade.

Ely is a former lottery pick who helped make up for the absences of Emeka Okafor and Sean May last season, averaging highs in points (9.8 ) and rebounds (4.9). His frame allows him to play at either power forward and center, making him a significant asset, especially since he won't break your bank.

I'd take a flyer, same draft as Wilcox, right? If I recall correctly Ely was supposed to be a very good shot blocker, with the rest of his game needing work.

What do the nets or spurs have to offer compared to what we have to offer? Can we outdo them without losing much?

I like the idea it would be worth a shot. Can't hurt to have another 6'10" guy without the last name Burke.:bhiich:

I still covet Wilcox, Nene and Ely among others out of that draft. Obviously, the Suns are not going to get Nene or even Jeffries, but I wouldn't might getting a young big with some upside like Ely (although I would prefer Wilcox).

I certainly got Skita out of my system. Thinking about that draft... whatever happened to Haislip. It appears he just never made the transition to the NBA. As I recall, he had a ton of athletic ability.

Anyway, I'd take a flyer on Ely.
