C'mon Lex. My grandfather grew up in Dallas, my dad became a Cowboys fan because of him, and I became a Cowboys fan because of my dad. Im not just a "cowgirl fan." I post at most of the other boards here. (Suns board almost exclusively)

Hell, I was even being nice.

Thanks.

Question for Wasted Fate

Would Emmitt Smith still be a Cowboy if he only was going to make 1 or 2 million this season?

It may have taken some creativity in negotiations to bring Smith into the fold. It is a shame they couldn't have done so in the past to keep some of their own young talented players on the roster.

The question is not whether the Cards have the cap dollars to spend, it is whether they have the cap dollars to waste. I don't believe that they do.

Reeks of PR.

Build a good team to put fans in the seats. Fans wearing Cardinals' uniforms.

I think Emmitt wanted to go to a place where he knows that he'll get the carries. Parcells hinted that he wanted to go in a different direction and Jerry (aka Satan) agreed. I love Smith. He's my all-time favorite player. He's at the end of his carreer and wanted to goto a team that will give him the carries. I dont blame him for coming to AZ, its almost like a second home for him.

I just think that Shipp should have been given a chance here. He is better than Emmitt at this point imo. With all of that said, Smith will make up for it in ticket sales alone...and bring some well needed credibility here to the Valley.

Alright! The d-line problem has finally been solved! Oh, wait a second . . . send me back to Prague!

Nice PR move buffoons - 2 years at 7-8 mill? Wow - this team continues to baffle me, but now they are keeping me interested - can't wait to see what we do with the draft!

Positive outlook on everything not Cards intact - general bewilderment at the Cards, intact. We've made some good moves that I have been happy with, but that's just too much money for a guy in the midnight of his career, when we already have a solid back - it's been two years and the d-line is still in shambles IMO, but whatever - i don't care to argue with people on this board anymore.

A-dam robbed me of everything i owned the first night - don't saty at Bob's Ghetto Youth Hostel - space cakes and herb - great - dog poo and aspirin masquerading as hashish and nose candy from street people - bad - Prague - the best place in the world - women in form fitting jeans, gouhlash, castles and 50 cent pints - GREAT!

Credibility....

Interesting. I wonder what gave the Cowboys credibility when they turned their franchise from a 1/15 loser to a Super Bowl champion. Overpaying and signing other teams' cast-offs. No.

Developing young talent? Yes. Keeping that talent when it developed? Yes. Signing the occasional free agent (Haley, D. Sanders) to add to the mix? Yes. Winning? Yes.

I am not picking on your post. I just think that the Cards are doing the opposite of gaining credibility. I think that other teams are not at all impressed that the Cards would overpay Smith. By the way, overpaying Smith does not make the Cards "big spenders". Overpaying a player like the Cards have Smith is like overpaying Centers or Mckinnon. They are making more than they are worth, but not more than the Cards are willing to pay. Affordable signing bonuses and the like.

Introducing him at a press conference like he is a "great" addition is a joke. I have always liked Smith. But, at this point in his career, the Cards will be lucky if he is a consistent contributor, much less a play-maker.

oh c'mon everyone, centering your REBUILDING project on a 30-something-old QBs and RBs nearing the end of their careers is prudent . . . isn't it?

we waaaaaaaaaay overpaid if it's the $7-8 mil for two years. and i'm sorry, shipp was the one part of the team that i was looking forward to watching and now i'm robbed of him?

i'll say this, i'm baffled and at the same intrigued by the emmitt signing. i mean, he's emmitt smith . . . what's he want with the cards? it just doesn't seem to equate in my head. on the other side, at the beginning of the FA period i said that i'd be sorely tempted to leave the cards if three things happened: we lost boston (check), we signed emmitt (check), and we resigned plummer (i knew the cards would find a way to drag me back, i just knew it). so the cards successfully hit two of the three dreaded actions. i'm so confused right now. probably as confused as i'll be rooting for emmitt to squeek out 3.8 yards/carry next season. help - wheeeeeee (can't muster the all-caps)...

If the 30 something RB is the best in the history of the game, it is. I still believe that it will be Emmitt's intangibles that will help this team more than his ypc. Don't tell me that this Cardinal team won't have more of a swagger knowing that Emmitt is on the team. National interest will be high as the season begins. This will be one of the top stories going into the season. I believe the other players will feed off this attention. I think the level of play will improve. I think the attitude of the team will improve. Its more than money/yr or yards/carry. Its knowing that your on a par with any team in the NFL. I think signing Emmitt will help the Cardinals believe that.

I'm sure too that Emmit's presence will inspire the other players, give them kind of a moral boost, you know.

"PHOENIX (AP) _ Emmitt Smith reached an agreement to join the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday.

The Cardinals called an afternoon news conference to announce the deal, NFL spokesman Joe Browne said. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The NFL's leading career rusher was released Feb. 27 by Dallas in a salary-cap move agreed to by the Cowboys and Smith. The Cardinals were the only team the 33-year-old Smith visited.

Arizona lost quarterback Jake Plummer and wide receiver David Boston. They have since signed Jeff Blake to replace Plummer and signed safety Dexter Jackson, the MVP of the Super Bowl for Tampa Bay. "

I think this is a great addition. Here is a guy you have to like. Will bring a presence to the locker room. Has been on a superbowl team. If he stays healthy he will puts some yards on the board. Sporting News had an article today saying this is not the same old Cardinals and we had not signed Smith when that was written. They also said Jake will be behind a worse offensive line that he was with the Cardinals and might not do so well. I am starting to get a good feeling for once in about the last 10 years. I see we still have some money left and still have the June cuts to go. We should find a receiver and at least a middle of the road DE.

I agree with artp that this Emmitt signing will be a great benefit to the team just by improving the atmosphere around it. You know our players want to see bigger crowds, want to be on national TV, want to be the lead on ESPN. With Emmitt signing, that's tangible proof that stuff can really happen this year. I think the guys might just work a little harder with that good vibe.

I'm OK with Wr. We have to find better than a middle of the road DE before the draft. If we have to depend on rookies to upgrade our DL play, we won't win many games.

hmm, attitude huh? wasn't coach mac's rah-rah stuff supposed to do that? wasn't the fact that we filled our roster with "high-motor" and "good character guys" supposed to do that? it still comes down to talent in the nfl and i don't think we upgraded our talent with emmitt. i will repeat however, that i'm unsure how to feel about the emmitt signing. it's not everyday that your team signs a hall-of-famer, even one with the tread as worn as emmitt's. i just think we may have given him more money than his worth (though i acquiesce that they may have HAD to do so since they are the cards) and we may be benching our only GOOD young player (shipp) to do so.

let's hope the improved attitude and confidence in the lockerroom helps emmitt average more than 3.8 yds/carry and translates into an additional 20 sacks (but sorry, i just don't see attitude and confidence carrying the load).

ah, what do i know? at least all my cowgirl-fan-friends are vomiting all over the U.S. of A right now!!!! WHEEEEEEEE!

This is an excellent signing. With Marcel Shipp waiting in the wings. We have depth. Nothing wrong with that. Shipp should still get in there. Yes Emmitt is past his prime and for now the Cardinals have to overpay player to come here. Emmitt gives them creditibility. I think he is still at least as good as Shipp but we have a good 1-2 punch. We still have plenty of money to sign other players.

Emmitt not only gives the Cardinals credability, Emmitt IS credability. The Cardinals will be the most interesting team going into the 2003 season.
Boy, if I could just spell that word, it would give this post a lot more creditabil...credabli... Oh Whatever.

I was struggling with whether it was credibility or credability too....I guess I could get off my seat and look it up in a dictionary (for that word too)

Like you said....whatever....:D

Emmitt brings credibility? Hell yeah!

Imagine your in a meeting of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in walks Dwight D. Eisenhower! Or, if your a indy car racer and in walks AJ Foyt!

This guy carries more than the football, he carries instant RESPECT from everyone on his team. Emmitt's been a winner for 10 years in his career.

In my opinion, this is the one thing that has been lacking on this football team...a proven winner! His effects will be felt and seen very soon and should carry on well after he's gone...

Am I carrying too much, maybe...my wife has been looking over my shoulder lately, and I can't bad mouth Emmitt...too much at least...

I think it is a good signing.

Emmitt gives us something we haven't had since well I don't know.....johnny johnson and ronald moore?????but with more talent.

Shipp is going to get plenty of carries. He will make a difference this year even if emmitt gets 15-20 carries a game.

Smiths numbers should go up because,
1. Our o-line isn't bottom 5 its top 5
2. Smith said he is healthier now than in any of the past 3 years.
3. Shipp will make a far better complement to Smith than hambrick did.

Is it expensive? Yes, but thats if he makes the incentives (from what we have heard)...and if he does....who cares...he gets paid for what he's worth

We still have plenty of cap space.

Now we have some GREAT rb depth

I think shipp could be a star, he has shown me potential....and definitely worthy of being labeled a rb with great potential. But, didn't we say that of johnny johnson, ronald moore, hell 'le who' johnson to some degree....My point, we all think shipp probably will do good, but he hasn't proven it over time yet, with that uncertainty, bringing in emmitt smith makes our rb situation a whole lot better, we are relatively certain now to have good-great running attack next year imo...unless of course there are constantly 8-9 in the box.

If shipp falters or goes into a sophmore slump, who do we have? Emmitt smith. 'nuff said.
