From Sporting News Warroom:

Coverage skills: Has excellent athleticism. Changes directions quickly and shows good burst out of cuts. Is fast enough to run with most NFL receivers. Shows good range. Uses hands adequately and appears comfortable playing close to the line. Must be more physical and improve ability to jam receivers. Grade: 8.1.

Run/pass recognition: Has great experience facing elite competition, and shows improved instincts. Sometimes can be overaggressive. Grade: 7.7.

Closing speed: Has the speed to run with most receivers downfield. Shows enough short-area burst to recover if caught out of position. Grade: 8.1.

Ball skills: Adjusts well to passes. Can make big plays and is elusive after an interception. Grade: 8.1.

Run support: Is neither physical nor strong enough. Lacks the upper-body strength to shed blocks quickly. Takes poor angles to the ball and offers little in run support. Doesn't always wrap up; is an inconsistent open-field tackler. Grade: 7.3.

Bottom line: Green has great natural ability. He has the quickness, change-of-direction skills and agility to blanket receivers on underneath routes. He has above-average ball skills in coverage. He doesn't provide much run support, though. Green can play safety as well as corner and has the speed and bulk for either assignment. He will be off the board by the mid-to-late second round.

Dan Pompei analysis
Solid, complete prospect with good cover skills to play man-to-man. Is aggressive. Breaks quickly and shows suddenness. Has decent speed and recovery ability. Is aware in coverage. Can go get the ball. Allows too much cushion at times. Good, not great tackler. No. 5 on Pompei's CB rankings

OVERVIEW

An outstanding kick blocker on special teams, Green also took on a positive leadership role while starting every game at cornerback as a senior. Won the President's Award for leadership in 2004. Green is the type of player who combines excellent athletic ability with speed and experience. He has come back strong to help solidify the secondary since missing the entire 2002 season with a knee injury.

Green excelled as a quarterback, receiver and defensive back at Clewiston (Fla.) High School. Voted the team's MVP in 1999, he was named to the Palm Beach Post All-Area team and earned all-state honors as a senior. Green was the fourth-rated free safety in the state by The Florida Times-Union and was also a member of that newspaper's Super 75 team. He posted five interceptions on defense, passed for 1,100 yards with 12 touchdowns and rushed for over 400 yards and six scores his senior season. He accumulated over 2,200 career passing yards during his last two seasons. Green also lettered in track and basketball, placing fifth in the state in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.3 seconds.

Green played in 11 games as a true freshman, starting six contests, as he recorded 31 tackles (19 solos) with a stop behind the line of scrimmage and four interceptions in 2000.

He appeared in 10 games as a sophomore in 2001, collecting 18 tackles (11 solos) as he deflected two passes and blocked two punts. Green sat out the 2002 season with a medical redshirt after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the summer.

He returned to action in 2003, starting seven contests. Green recorded a career-high 58 tackles (41 solos) with two stops behind the line of scrimmage. He had 166 yards on three interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, and also deflected six passes while blocking the fourth kick of his career. Green started every game as a senior, making 36 tackles (20 solos) with an interception and five pass breakups.

In 47 games with the Hokies, Green registered 143 tackles (91 solos) with 5½ stops for losses of 39 yards, three forced fumbles, four blocked kicks and 25 pass deflections. He also had eight interceptions for 264 yards in returns and two touchdowns. Only Willie Pile (270, 1999-2002) and Ashley Lee (351, 1980-84) gained more yards on interception returns in school history.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a long, lean build with adequate muscle definition, but does have room for additional growth … Has very good short-area quickness with an explosive break on the ball … Has no problems retaining plays and is rarely caught out of position due to his ability to quickly make reads and keys … Has above-average change-of-direction agility, balance and body control, doing a nice job of keeping plays in front of him … Gets a sharp break on the ball and has more than enough range to recover when beaten, but is rarely caught out of position … Stays tight on the hip of receivers on deep routes and cannot be beaten by double moves … His drive to the ball and feel for the pass allow him to get an early jump on the ball … Will not hesitate to come up and plug holes in run support … Has the hand strength to handle his assignments in press coverage, but his speed is also good for man and Cover 2 assignments … Does a very good job of shadowing and trailing in press coverage, and has the ability to plant and drive back to the ball … Effective in turning and flipping his hips when coming out of breaks and showed marked improvement in 2004 to run with the receivers on deep routes … Attacks the ball and shows good timing and proper hand extension competing for the pigskin in tight quarters.

Negatives: Has added strength to his frame, but still lacks ideal size … Has the strength, but needs to get more physical in coverage, as he sometimes gets pushed around by the bigger receivers when trying to dictate route progression … Will get turned around some in man coverage when he peeks into the backfield too long … Quick out of his backpedal, but could be even faster if he would not get so high in his stance … Adequate to read the quarterback in zone coverage, but has good ball skills … Has good hands, but likes to catch the ball with his body … Because of size issues, he is slow to get off blocks and is not physical in his run support, but will tackle … He sometimes takes bad angles and will miss in space, especially when he goes low and tries to trip the runner up.

INJURY REPORT

2001 -- Missed the Pittsburgh game due to tonsillitis.

2002 -- Missed the entire season after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while working out in July … Underwent reconstructive surgery.

AGILITY

HIGH SCHOOL

Attended Clewiston (Fla.) High School, playing football for coach Al Morrell … Competed as a quarterback, receiver and defensive back … Team MVP in 1999 … Named to the Palm Beach Post All-Area team and earned all-state honors as a senior … Was the fourth-rated free safety in the state by The Florida Times-Union and also a member of that newspaper's Super 75 team … Posted five interceptions on defense, passed for 1,100 yards with 12 touchdowns and rushed for over 400 yards and six scores his senior season … Gained over 2,200 career passing yards during his last two seasons … Also lettered in track and basketball, placing fifth in the state in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.3 seconds.

Hmmm... Well, doesn't sound like a bad pick. Certainly doesn't have the 'wow' factor... but this is the 3rd round.

Glad we are shoring up our secondary.

yeah, we really did a number with our secondary today......probably need some help on the linebacking core and a tight end before it's all said and done.

Pompei has him ranked 4th overall for CB's, better than Carlos Rogers, Webster, Corey Webster and Marlin Jackson. Great value pick, and we have covered our most important needs in the first three picks. The other picks are just gravy, maybe some OL/TE prospects, maybe a run stuffing D-line or linebacker. Excellent picks so far.

I've heard him compared to Al Harris, from Green Bay via Philadelphia.

Surprise
per Len Pasquarelli

• Eric Green (Virginia Tech)
Vital statistics: 5-foot-11 3/8, 198 pounds, 4.49 in the 40.
Numbers game: Was a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back in high school. Also a standout track performer in the hurdles. Started in 27 of his 47 appearances, including seeing action as a true freshman, and registered 143 tackles, 5½ tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 25 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one sack. Averaged 33.0 yards on interception returns and scored twice.
Upside: Nice, compact build and knows how to hang it on receivers. Plays a little faster even than his stopwatch speed. Aggressive and physical, will use his hands to push people around and re-route wideouts. Tracks the ball well and has soft hands. Plants hard and really bursts forward.
Downside: A little hitch in his turn-and-go, and has to get better in general with his footwork. Not as aware in zone coverages. Only a decent tackler and doesn't exactly look anxious to get up and stop the run at times.
The dish: Quality defender who will be chosen in the second round.

From ESPN Insider:

Strengths: Possesses excellent athletic ability, can change directions quickly and shows good burst out of cuts. Opens hips well, is fast enough to run with most receivers and has the leaping ability to compete for jump balls downfield. Does an adequate job of using hands and appears comfortable playing close to the line of scrimmage. Possesses good speed and shows good range when asked to drop into zone coverage. Shows good burst to the ball while it's in the air, has the ball skills to make some big plays and shows good elusiveness as a ball carrier. Saw extensive playing time at the college level and shows good instincts in coverage. Gets downfield quickly when asked to cover kicks and takes the shortest path to the kicker when going for the block.

Weaknesses: Not physical or strong enough. Rarely muscles undersized receiver out of their routes and needs to improve ability to jam receivers. Has decent but not good speed. Can be overaggressive and lacks the second gear to recover once caught out of position. Lacks the upper body strength to shed blocks quickly, takes poor angles to the ball and offers little in run support. Fails to breakdown at times, doesn't always wrap up and is an inconsistent open field tackler. Missed the 2002 season rehabbing a torn ACL and durability is a concern. Doesn't appear to give the same effort on every snap.

Overall: Green played in all 12 games of his freshman season in 2000 and he played in 10 games in 2001. He injured his knee during a summer workout and red-shirted in 2002. Green played in 13 games in 2003, starting five of them. As a senior in 2004, Green finished with 36 tackles, one interception and five passes broken up while making significant strides in terms of his overall consistency in coverage. Green has the quickness, COD skills and agility to blanket receivers underneath and, while he lacks elite speed, he is fast enough to hold up on the perimeter in the NFL. He also has above average ball skills in coverage. However, Green doesn't provide much run support, he's not as physical as he needs to be in coverage, and he lacks explosive catch-up speed to recover from a mistake. A torn ACL in 2002 is also concerning in terms of his long-term durability. In our opinion, Green has the potential to develop into a fulltime outside starter in the NFL and could be a slot cover corner early in his career. Green has enough upside to take a chance on in the second round but it would be surprising if he was selected higher than that due to the aforementioned "red flags".
