well I am one of those who thinks payton is not an impact player anymore, if you keep trading away your younger stud players and fill the gaps with old ones(and Payton is old) then your limiting your window to pretty much 1 year, and your chances of everything going right for one year and winning it all are pretty slim.

With JJ in fold you have two young studs to build around and replace parts as you see fit. I think Marion is a great player but I would rather see him go over JJ becuase he is getting close to 30 once his legs start to go in the new 2-5 years I am not sure he is an All Star caliber player, it might be in the suns best interest to move him in the next few years while his value is high.

Marion will be 31 when his contract expires. his let MIGHT start going out at 31 or so. and then, we'd be fine. his contract would be off the books. even if we trade him with a year left on his contract he'd still have great value for a team.

i say if we can afford to keep the guy then keep him. its not like he isnt producing. Marion also hasnt been plagued by ANY injuries that would lead me to think he'd break down early.

ESPN news is reporting that the Phoenix Suns are expected to trade JJ to Atlanta for Diaw and two first-round draft picks.

Of course this would have to happen at the same exact time as the end of the trade deadline for major-league baseball.

Josh Smith/Diaw/Salim for JJ/Barbs/Thompson would make me happy. even Smith/Diaw or Salim for JJ would be ok.

Smith would be great. he REALLY picked it up during the last month of last season. he averaged 16/10/2, shooting 45.5% from the field. THAT'S impressive for a 19 year old.

Diaw would also be a nice pickup. he's really kinda put towards the back with the immergence of Smith/Childress. but i think he'd be a decent addition to the ballclub.

Salim would be one of those instant offence type guys that would come off the bench and just score. i'd not sure about his playmaking abilities, but i'm sure he'd be better at distributing than barbosa.

the biggest thing with trading JJ is that we'd 1.) get our MLE back. i think we would have the ability to sign Bell without using the MLE. 2.) we'd be keeping Marion. i'm tired of the rumors, and would just like to see something difinitive.....either we know we are going to keep him, or we trade him. here we'd be pretty much know for a fact that he's staying.

I can see how this would make you excited, but I am still sitting here thinking these guys contributed to pretty much the worst team in the NBA, removing a key player like JJ and to a lesser extent Barbosa for guys with potential really scares me, I can easily see them hurting the team more than helping them in a run this season. It is tricky you have to balance the now with the future when you are this close to the title, going extreme in any direction could set you back a few years.

Now it says ESPN's Mark Stein is reporting that the Phoenix Suns are expected to send Joe Johnson to Atlanta for Diaw and two first-round draft picks.

I just don't see why the Suns would do this trade for basketball reasons. I think this makes the Suns 4th or 5th in the West right now (not taking into account divsion championship rules).

Uggghhh. And what about the future? An aging cancer with declining skills vs. a up and coming multitalented young stud who most think will be a future cornerstone of this team along with Amare. And BTW, Payton is still a FA right now, so he has no contract or salary.

That's a great point but all that matters right now for me is a championship because no matter what the future suns cap space looks UGLY.

Up and coming star in JJ and for what? At 11.6 million for his contract at his age? If we match that it is aproaching the top 30 salary in the nba THIS YEAR and we already are going to have to give a lot of money for Amare in the future, so just imagine the future payroll down the line of amare/JJ combined *shudders violently*.

I do not want a kobe/shaq type team considering (feel free to lynch me now) that amare/JJ is nowhere near as good as that combo (mainly do to JJ) and never will be.

JJ = too expensive.

In the next couple of years the suns will be able to find someone(s) to compliment amare once marion and nash are gone. And they won't have to spend 12 million per year to do that. At least that is my opinion but you never know, I could be dead wrong. I just think that on ATL JJ is going to fade, and everyone is giving him too much credit because a lot of his and his teammates improvements last year were do to the magical touch of one Steve Nash.

I care about the championship too, I still don't think Gary Payton gets you anywhere near it.

I just don't get the infatuation with this guy Payton he is so far past his prime it's not even funny. So we are willing to give up on another young player let him have his great years somewhere else, then probably resign him once he is older and most of his prime is gone? Because that is exactly what the Suns always do.
I know I am going to get killed here with Nash is still great, YES i agree but when are we going to stop trying to bring in these guys after they have proven themselves and develop some players. I am tired of building a team off of the starting all star team from 1996.

Josh Smith is as untouchable you can get for a team that had the worst record last year. They're pimping him pretty hard in Atlanta so he wouldn't be part of the deal.

I would be ok w/ this trade if we got Smith or maybe even Childress, but Diaw? Now what is our starting 5 like? I guess Raja will start? If we do this trade, then we REALLY need to sign Finley for the vet minimum.

God, this makes my stomache hurt, I thought we were finally so close.

well.....if JJ's gone, then i hope it is something he DIDNT WANT. as much as a like the guy, i have a good feeling that behind the closed doors he and the suns got a little ugly.

Boris would be a nice pick up i guess. he's got a couple more of his rookie contract.

The reason I want Gary Payton is because his assist game is closest to Nash's, he can go out there when nash is resting and run/make plays and the team won't suffer so much of a road bump when nash is on the bench.

Gary's defense combined with Raja's could give teams headaches also. Imagine the spurs run and gunning like they did last year and then each team makes its substitutions, GP and raja come out and the offense of the suns is still running but the spurs have to dramatically change their playstyle because gp/raja is hounding Parker and Obi-wan. Frustration sets in and the suns emerge victorious.

All wishful thinking I guess. :D

Gary Payton would be a fantastic backup point guard for the Phoenix Suns. No, he's not the same player he once was, but he would still be the best backup point guard in the NBA. He's much better right now than Barbosa is and will most likely ever be.

That said, I can live without him. He would only get 15-18 minutes per game backing up Steve Nash, and I don't like the idea of the two of them in the backcourt together.

Sarver is going to catch a lot of flak for this.
