That's because you like most on this thread are myopic and pigeonhole themselves into seeing matters only from a pro-Suns point of view. There's more than one way to play basketball - running up and down the court and jacking up 3's is the Suns way and it serves them and many other teams in the past well, but playing defense and pounding the ball inside is another way teams have played for decades and it can be just as effective and well-played brand of basketball.

There's more "boring" ways that teams play every sport. Some baseball teams do it by pitching and manufacturing runs while others load their lineup with big hitters and hope to outsmash their opponent. Does that make the Yankees a better product than the Angels? Some football teams prefer playing conservative on offense and running the ball and playing defense while others like to air it out and blow out their opponents? Does that make Texas Tech and the St. Louis Rams a better product than West Virginia or the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Excellent post.

Many Suns fans believe that their style of play is the standard of 'exciting' basketball when it is only ones interpretation of exciting basketball. Their have been many times when I have seen the Suns play and wondered how this 'unorthodox' style of play is gonna last before its replaced by something else.

At least you admit to being a Spurs fan.

What is so unorthodox about fast break basketball. They've been playing it for decades. The Celtics of the 60's and the Lakers of the 80's were great fast break teams and winners as well. Even the Celtics of 80's ran a lot more than walk it teams like the Spurs.

Clearly running has been out of fashion for a while. During the 90's teams focused on isolation plays to exploit the illegal defense rules. The Suns teams of the of the earl 90's were as bad as anybody with Barkley dribbling for 15 seconds until somebody came over to double so he could kick it out. There was no passing, no movement, and just a constant grabbing and holding as the game ground to a halt.

The rules committee decided that this was crap and tried to change the rules to permit more movement and limit the kinds of stuff defenses could do. No hand checking, no interference with guys cutting through the lanes, tighter enforcement of the defensive three second rule, etc. It helped to speed the game up during the regular season and the casual fan like it a lot better than the meat gringer style of the 90's.

But obviously a lot people hate those changes. They think the old way was better. Deciding the old way was better is subjective. I know Pat Riley hates the new rules. But to say the old way was more exciting is simply wrong and changing the definition to something else doesn't change that.
