LOS ANGELES - Former Oakland Raiders No. 2 draft pick Darrell Russell and another unidentified ex-NFL player were killed when their car crashed into a parked MTA bus on La Cienega Boulevard north of Culver City on Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department told KNBC-TV.
A Los Angeles police detective identified the passenger fatally injured as Russell, 29, of Santa Monica.
Detective Mike Fischer of the West Traffic Division says the driver, who also died, has not yet been identified.
A former star at the University of Southern California, Russell was drafted No. 2 overall by the Raiders in 1997 but was suspended indefinitely by the NFL in July of 2004 for again violating the league's substance abuse policy.
It was the seventh time Russell had broken the NFL policy.
A month before that, he had been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Associated Press reported that the car's 25-year-old driver and Russell were in full cardiac arrest when firefighters removed them from the mangled Pontiac Grand Prix.
The vehicle was moving "at a high rate of speed," but investigators have found no evidence of racing, despite earlier reports from an MTA spokesman, according to police spokesman Kevin Maiberger.
NBC4 reported that the driver of a silver Pontiac lost control on La Cienega. The car jumped a curb and struck a tree, newstand, fire hydrant, light pole, another tree and a bus, authorities said.
The accident at the intersection of La Cienega and Sawyer Street in the South Robertson area occurred just after 6 a.m. Thursday, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers.
The two men in the vehicle that struck the bus were trapped for about 25 minutes until firefighters pulled them out of the wreckage, Myers said.
The bus, which was not in service, was on the side of the road with its hazard lights on when it was struck, Sotero said. The driver was on the bus but was not injured, he said.
Southbound La Cienega Boulevard was closed near Sawyer Street after the accident as crews worked to stop the flow of water from the broken fire hydrant.
