I put together excerpts from DraftExpress' writeups of VSL regarding 'bigs' other than first round picks and players who've made their place already. Some of these may not make their teams roster because there's not enough room... the depth of this draft probably has some teams wanting to add 3 players. Naturally, my chief criteria are defense, rebounding and shotblocking. I may have inadvertently included some true SF's as their NBA position was often not clear to me.

Interesting thought... the depth of this draft may also help us keep Steven Hunter... it sure hasn't looked like anyone is anxious to sign him. Like they were waiting to see what kind of pickings there was in the summer leagues. I think it may come down to whether he'd rather play for the LLE with us or the same from another team. Or maybe Atlanta will sign him out of spite after we match JJ.

Orlando - drafted Vazquez(11), Diener(38) Gortat(57)
Jerome Beasley was straight up impressive today. On a team devoid of any real intriguing rookie prospects Beasley was a surprise. The one time Miami draftee looks like he can play the PF spot for some team this year and should Orlando ship out Kelvin Kato I’d say that Beasley would make a fine backup to Dwight Howard.
Jerome Beasley- Continued to show a nice faceup game and even something resembling a back to the basket game. Tried to play some defense even, looking decent in the process. Beasley had another solid outing, showing off a lot of skill on the offensive end and making another solid case for himself to make someone’s roster this upcoming season.
Jerome Beasley- A very solid half for Beasley once he got to play with Dwight Howard off of the court. He showed a great face up game to stroke the mid-range jumper, took the ball coast to coast with surprising quickness to finish with a thunderous dunk, some nice moves inside, a nice all-around half on the offensive end for Beasley. 6 points and 4 rebounds for Beasley at the half.
Jerome Beasley-Jerome has had a pretty solid game for the most part. Beasley’s shot is not falling for him in the first half, but his moves have been fluid and decisive despite being matched up against a variety of different sized defenders. Beasley’s best attribute has been his rebounding. Jerome also was very vocal with his teammates and has tried to be a leader on the floor. Seems very active so far and is getting a long look now that Howard has left.
In the second half Jerome got his shot to fall a bit more, but all his moves to the hoop have been solid so it’s no surprise. Beasley rotated well defensively and really tried to get involved on both ends of the court.

Dallas no draft picks
DJ Mbenga Did a nice job sticking to his strengths, challenging and blocking shots around the rim, rebounding well, and showing a nice hook shot in the paint. Not the most skilled guy in the world, but makes up for it with his effort and a massive body.
Josh Powell-Josh is having another solid half of basketball. Powell gets good position on his man when going for rebounds and he gets off his feet with quickness and strength. Powell’s shown sure hands in traffic when going for rebounds and has finished with power on almost every attempt close to the basket. Defensively Powell is having some problems in the post, but going against Dwight Howard is not an ideal match-up to analyze him in this regard. If Josh could show a consistent jumper from at least 15 feet he could really make himself an asset.

Golden State drafted Diogu, Monta Ellis(40), Taft(49)
Warriors have bigs Biedrins, Zarko, Petrius, coming off the bench already and they added Ike and Taft so the latter might not make their roster...
Chris Taft- Was loving the fact that he was being guarded by Martynas Andriuskevicius. Showed some nice footwork to use his trademark jump hook shot to score on him repeatedly. Did some very nice work inside the paint in the first quarter. Got a little scrappy on the glass and with loose balls as well.
In the 2nd half Taft continued to work inside the paint, scoring with back to the basket, coming up with offensive rebounds and playing solid defense. Granted most of what he did was against the string bean Andriuskevicius, but it’s an encouraging sign regardless to see him actually motivated.
Chris Taft-Taft has played a pretty gritty game so far. He mixed it up with PJR early on and got a technical foul for his trouble. When Taft remains active and interested he looks like a player, but his motor is always a question. At one point Taft called for the ball continuously without establishing position and turned right into the double team for the turnover. Taft gingerly jogged up the court like he could care less that play was going on and seemed caught up in the previous play. While this behavior is typical out of many NBA players, Taft is a second round pick and has been questioned for his intensity so he can ill afford to show a lack of hustle. Still, Taft got some tough boards and made some nice post moves under decent pressure so he’s not a lost cause, just a mixed bag.
Taft started off the 2nd half pretty well but had to sit out most of it after taking a nasty fall on the floor after an attempted dunk. He hurt his back on the play and was on the sidelines stretching for the rest of the game. He finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds in 15 minutes.

Washington drafted Andray Blatche(49)
have Etan Thomas, Spencer Haywood, Jamison so probably won't carry
Ramos plus both Fuller and Cisse
Hiram Fuller- Fuller has quietly had a pretty nice summer league for himself. He continued with that by having an excellent first half against the Magic. He was super active on the glass, he played good defense and blocked or challenged a number of shots, he used his athleticism and length on both ends of the floor and generally just did a good job down low for the Wizards.
Fuller finished with a double double thanks to his excellent effort in the paint and tenacity.
Ousmanne Cisse-Cisse, the forgotten high schooler from a few years back, has shown a nice game so far. Cisse is still sculpted like Adonis and looks capable with either his back to the basket or facing up. Ousmanne looks to have good form on his jumper and can shoot it out to 18 feet without pressing the motion. He’s only 6’8” but if he continues to display the type of poise he has so far he’ll probably make someone’s team. More to come from him.

Denver Hodge,SG(20), Kleiza,SF(27),Ricky Sanchez,SF(35), Axel Hervelle, PF(52)
Boniface N’Dong- N’Dong surprised a bit in the game so far. Looks like a Manut Bol clone, but has shown a nice little mid range shot and pulled off a couple of shimme shakes in the lane to get free. Doesn’t have great hands as a couple of passes bounced right off him. Great shot blocking instincts and long as hell.
N’Dong had another solid half in the 2nd, moving well without the ball and putting himself in a position to score. Boniface continued to impress with some outside shots that no one knew he had, at one point hitting a turnaround baseliner in his defender’s face. If he was a little more athletic he would be a lock to make someone's roster, but he might just do it regardless if he'll settle for the minimum (he can get more in Europe).
Boniface N’Dong- Possibly the biggest sleeper of this summer league, “Butterface” N’Dong as we affectionately call him keeps getting more and more confident every game that goes by and continues to show off a wide array of skills that could very well land him a contract in the NBA next year. N’Dong once again showed that he can face the basket and hit the 16 foot jump shot very well, he was active in the paint and played with a ton of intensity for every minute he was on the court. He shows very strong fundamentals for a 7 footer, sealing his man off in the paint, catching and turning around fluidly for the dunk, and then boxing his man out very effectively and rebounding on the other end of the floor.

Sacramento drafted Francisco Garcia, SG(23)
Ellis Myles- Myles was his usual tough and scrappy self; rebounding, playing tough defense, knocking people in the paint and trying to make things happen around the basket. His jump hook wasn’t falling for him at all, but he made a few nice passes today. Nothing special out of Ellis here.
Erik Daniels- Daniels looked like he was going to have a great game in the first quarter as he started off making some fantastic passes and was involved in another couple of big plays. Shortly after he had to sit for a while (once again) because of a nasty spill he took after diving for a loose ball. He came back before the end of the 2nd half and hit another mid-range jumper, which is absolutely huge for his chances of sticking on a team as a small forward. He played some great D and scored some nice baskets as well.
In the 2nd half Daniels was really feeling it on both ends of the floor. He hit a couple of mid-range shots and even nailed a 3 pointer, while playing his traditional excellent defense and making some wonderful passes in the half-court offense. Daniels has come along way from the player he was just a year ago as a senior at Kentucky. He was a 6-8 center back then with absolutely no game outside the paint. Now he is a fairly skilled and versatile small forward who can hit the open shot, play excellent defense, and kill you on the pick and roll with the way he passes.

New Jersey drafted Antoine Wright, SG(15), Mile Ilic, C(43)
Sam Clancy- Just a solid overall game for big Sam. He’s got the power to back his man down and shows a very solid understanding of when his shot is there as well as where his teammates are when he’s got the ball. New Jersey was so bad for most of this game that Sam had to organize the offense for most of the second half, he did so quite well. I’m not sure how solid his jumper is, but he looked smooth on one baseline shot and if he can add that to his repertoire I think he could stick on a roster in need of a thinking man’s power forward.
Sam Clancy-Sam is what he is. Sam works hard and is good at using his body to establish position. Clancy grabs boards in traffic and has good quick hands that he uses well when around the basket. His footwork is pretty solid as he can change directions with confidence and finish strong. Clancy a little short and not explosive enough to be a starting power forward and will have trouble getting minutes as a backup on a good team due to a limited range, which will make it hard to set up his post game.
Clancy had a huge second half for the Nets and kept them in the game until very late. Sam moves great without the ball for a power forward and puts himself in good position on nearly every possession. Sam blocked shots, Grabbed challenged rebounds, and scored on post moves and nice cuts to the basket. Even though he has some physical limitations I'd like to see him get some NBA run as a backup just for one season to see if he can translate his smarts and toughness into some production.
Sam Clancy-Sam is bringing his lunch pail game to the court again. Sam has great footwork and uses his huge shoulders to get his defender on his heals. Sam really knows how to move around the floor, be it with the ball or without. He’s almost always the finishing man on a teammate’s pass and can finish strong or with touch even after contact. Doesn’t explode off the ground as much as he bull-dozes his defender, often carrying the man on his back as he continues to go for the hoop. He took over the game for the Nets in the first half and carried them to an 8 point lead.
Sam’s defensive positioning is very sound and he has sure, strong hands that help him secure rebounds in traffic. The play that stands out the most for Clancy was one where he reverse-pivoted for a hanging 12ft jumper and pulled the ball back while coming down and still released with perfect touch-a hard shot for any player, but very impressive for a man of his size. Clancy’s been impressive all week long and certainly has skills that translate to the NBA game.

Boston drafted Gerald Green, SG(18), Ryan Gomes, SF(50), Orien Greene, PG(53)
Ryan Gomes-Ryan is showing the nice rebounding instincts that have become common over the first three games. Gomes has a sense for when to do what and it showed on a number of plays. Ryan faked his shot on the perimeter twice, once for a smooth pull-up and another for the drive and dish. Ryan’s post game has been strong and he shows tremendous body control when taking the hit. Getting points off all kinds of hustle plays as well as his nice set game.
Gomes had another great half and picked up a double-double for his effort. Gomes just knows how to play and he is always in the right place at the right time. You can tell he sees plays developing in advance and it makes his game look effortless. As soon as he gets comfortable shooting from the outside and not instinctively going to the post he’ll be a complete small forward. Made a great steal mid-court and pushed the ball up, turned his back to the basket and snapped a no-look pass to a cutting Taylor Coppenrath. Ryan finished the game with a great full-extension tip in one handed between two defenders. The shot was a soft as could be.
Ryan Gomes- Ryan was the best player for the Celtics in the first half. Gomes came up with the ball on many occasions, be it a steal, Rebound, or loose ball. Gomes finished two “and 1” plays which were beautiful. Ryan just knows how to set up his defender for failure. He used up fakes and footwork to get his man off balance and is a guaranteed finish once the defender bites. Good Half.
Ryan did much of the same things in the second half. In the post Gomes is pretty much unguardable. He needs to keep trusting his outside shot so he can successfully transition to a true small forward, but his decision making is a sound as can be and his shot mechanics are virtually flawless. Gomes is a great finisher around the basket and doesn’t lose concentration or feel when he gets hit on the follow through.

Chicago no draftees
Mario Austin-Mario probably had the best half of any Bull player, although it wasn’t a particularly brilliant display. Austin had a very nifty reverse-pivot move toward the baseline and finished over a very long Boniface N’Dong for the soft jumper. Mario has shown some nice court vision on a few passes out of the post and has blocked two shots on successive plays that showed nice quickness.
In the second half Mario put his passing skills on full display. Austin just has a sharp sense of not only where his teammates are, but who can handle what pass. Mario didn’t shoot much and he missed a few easy attempts, but the moves were solid and sure so it could be attributed to luck. Austin’s euro-league statistics suggest that his relatively low impact is more a byproduct of a poor summer league squad than much else. Still, he should be more vocal about demanding the ball down low.

Cleveland drafted Martynas Andriuskevicius, C(44)
Cleveland has lots of roster openings and don't seem inclined to resign their own free agests.
Olumide Oyedeji-Oyedeji continues to impress in this game. Though he’s been solid all week the word is he just isn’t a system player. Oyedeji’s had stints on Seattle and Atlanta, two teams in need of front court help, but hasn’t produced in either. Despite the warnings we’ve heard about him, Oyedeji has produced every game we’ve seen and really exploded in this game, putting up a strong double-double. He’ll most likely get a contract from someone off his performance here and it will be up to him to prove the naysayer’s wrong.

Utah drafted Robert Whaley, C(51) plus 2 others. He got a very favorable mention in their first summer league game plus a good one from the Chi. camp. The team is loaded with young guys already so they could let him go... though he might push someone else out the door. He supposedly has a bit of a mean streak, which would appeal to Sloan, I'm sure.

Even the Phoenix Suns must realize that they need a couple more big men off the bench. I'm not really stressed about this though because I think they will just wait to see what falls through the cracks. There are all sorts of guys that could be available from undrafted free agent's two casualties of the new luxury tax amnesty rule.

Of course I'm still crossing my fingers for Lonnie Jones. :)

I like that big, hige Chinese guy from the Chicago Bulls. He is slow, but can hit that outside jum shot, always block his man for a rebound and plays defense. He might be little slow for the Suns system but I think he deserves a shot. Very dangerous around the basket as he has some post moves and definetely backs up his man with that huge body and just lies it up there. Plus, they said that he is as known as Yao in China so that gives you something to market.

Also, another big man playing for Bulls is Pasalic. He is a Croatian center, that can run the floor. He rebounds, pushes, runs, shoots 3's (haven't seen him make one) and defends. He could be a better fit for the Suns. Seemed very raw around the basket but definetely athletic.

These guys can't dominate the summer league but neither could Hunter if you put him there. I don't think that any of these two would be a major downgrade at our C position if Hunter left.

After seeing Tischer and others in the summer league, I think Hunter would definatly be the most dominant center. Although, from the big men I saw, that's not saying much. ;)
