If you extend each Diamondback position players' stats at the All Star break to a season of 500 AB's, here's how it would look. Of course, it's not a prediction . . . but it sure levels the playing field.

P L A Y E R......AVG.....RUNS.....2B.....3B.....HR.....RBIs.....STEALS

CATCHERS
Moeller...........309.......72.........42......0......16......61............2
Hammock.......282.......87..........24.....9......24.......87...........9
Barajas..........231.......52..........45......0.......7........74...........0

(If only Moeller could throw out base-stealers. Hammock sure looks like the best choice.)

CORNER INFIELDERS
Hillenbrand.....345.......83...........47......6.......35.....125.........0
Overbay.........277........47...........39......0.........9.......54.........0
Counsell.........268........95...........14......3.......10.......53........17
Grace..............209........54...........18......0........13......73........0

(Hillenbrand and Counsell look to be the best combination in the long run.)

MIDDLE INFIELDERS
Kata................344.........88............41.....0..........26.....57........0
Baerga............329.........79............43......0.........13....105.......3
Cintron.............300........90............30......2.........17......65.......2
Spivey..............255.........73...........27.......0.........22......73......2
Womack...........237.........68...........23.......7..........4........34....18

(Sure looks like Kata and Cintron are the best DP combination. Will BB put Spivey in his place -- in RF?)

OUTFIELDERS
Gonzalez..........310.........89............45.......1..........25.......95......5
Finley................308.........90............26.......8..........26.......81.....12
Bautista............260.........40............20........3...........3.......52.......5
Dellucci..............255.........58............38.......10..........7.......65......27
McCracken.........236.........46............14........7...........0.......53......10

(The question is, can Bautista regain his old form? If not, it sure looks like Spivey would be the best bet.)

Other tidbits! Did you know that Overbay had the 3rd highest number of official at-bats (after Gonzo and Finley) at the break? That's why I've been reacting to his miniscule 24 RBIs. He's 6th on the team in that category.

After Hillenbrand's HR pace, Kata and Finley are tied for 2nd, with Gonzo and Hammock right behind.

Counsell is on top in runs scored, with Finley and Cintron next, and Gonzo, Kata, and Hammock right behind.

No, it's not the end-all. But it sure shows who's been performing at what rate!

I don't understand this logic, if Gonzo has more home runs NOW than Hillenbrand, how does he end up with less at the end of the season?

He's looking at Hillenbrand's stats since coming to the Dbacks I believe. Figure those stats over 500 at bats and you get a helluva season!

Which is just a level or two better than saying that a guy who goes 3 for 4 in a game would have 375 hits on the season. :(

A bit of an exaggeration, isn't it, DWKB?

I based the comparison on Hillenbrand's performance with the D'backs for two reasons: 1- there's no Green Monster at the BOB, and 2-it's a different league.

Projecting Shea's figures based on his Red Sox and D'backs numbers Y-T-D, it comes out:

AVG...... .318
RUNS.... 64 (did anyone on the Bosox ever drive him in?)
2B........ 47
3B........ 2
HR........ 16
RBIs..... 109
SB........ 1

Nope, I think reflecting his D'backs stats is closer to projecting 500 AB's than these are.

Actually, Hillenbrand, Gonzo, and Finley are going to be out there every game anyway.

The projection was meant to highlight questions like Kata vs. Spivey at 2B; Cintron vs. Womack at SS (don't need that one anymore); Counsell vs. Overbay at the corners; Spivey vs. the others in RF; and our Catchers.

I was sure proud and impressed with the all-around performance of Kata, for example, after seeing what they would look like over a 500 AB season. Weren't you?
