There is a new rule that if you have an injury in the last minute and are under timeouts they will take a "4th" timeout and you will only have 2 in the 2nd half.

There was a lot of discussion after the game that people recall 3 SF timeouts in the second half..... i think it was just a mistake by the scoreboard operators (the put up 3 TO's instead of 2). Did anyone happen to notice this?

San Francisco took three timeouts in the second half.

1) On 3rd and 2 with 12:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, San Francisco did not get their receivers set properly, and Alex Smith called a timeout to avoid an illegal shift penalty.

2) With 2:48 remaining in the game, San Francisco called timeout during the Arizona drive in hopes that they would get the ball soon.

3) With 1:54 remaining in the game, San Francisco was allowed their seventh timeout of the game.

It would have been interesting if the cards had lost and this came into play

I received some clarification on this after the game.

If a team has burned all three of their timeouts in the first half and they have an injury within the last two minutes of the first half, the ref will announce a 4th timeout. However, this 4th timeout is sort of a "dummy" timeout that is only announced but not officially taken. If another injury occurs after the "dummy" timeout is announced, then that team will be penalized 5 yards. They do this to prevent players from potentially faking injuries.

Timeouts are independent to each half. Second Half timeouts cannot be taken away due to an event that took place in the first half.

I hope that this helps clarify the situation. We were mistaken in the post game show.

Great explanation.

Thanks.

Yesterday's officiating was horrendous - for both teams - and this is another example. Maybe that ref should spend less time flexing his guns in his new spandex Ref Uni and more time paying attention.

The timeout situation was confusing and poorly explained. Combine that with the inconsistency of the officiating crew's holding calls, and I'd say it was some seriously crappy ref work.

But hey, it's week 1 for them too.

Ed Hoculi really sucked yesterday. I know the guy's from Phoenix -- good for him -- but the calls seemed really ticky tacky when it came to unsportsmanlike conduct and late hits. I saw a lot of holds and pass interference that were never called.

I didn't like the unsportsmanlike on Green but the crowd was booing like crazy on the call on Dockett and I can't for the life of me see anybody questioning that call when they see the replay. Smith right at the sideline, Dockett launches himself like a torpedo, right at his knees. They're going to call that EVERY time, without fail.

The late hit on Griffith was iffy because it wasn't clear he knew the guy had stepped out since nobody was signalling it and the guy was still running. It wasn't like he was clearly out and everyone stopped, I don't think any of the players knew he was out.

There is also a new rule for onside kicks. Not sure what was wrong with the old system ...

The rule is you can't line up everyone on one side of the ball or sunting like that. Didn't hurt the 9ers yesterday.... Fitz had the ball go right through his hands
