per ESPN News. Wow! Gutsy move...and all the talk had them deciding between Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Singletary. So much for media speculation, huh?

Maybe they felt they should bring a college coach to work with their college level passer.

:D

Petrino was an outstanding college coach at Louisvile...he runs a wide open, innovative offense...makes one wonder if he can make a successful transistion to the NFL...or will he hit major sangs the way Steve Spurrier did?

This should likely mean that QB Brian Brohm will enter the draft now...it could be interesting to see whether the Falcons try to move up to draft Brohm. (Could the Cardinals at #5 be involved in a trade down with ATL?)

Don't be shocked if the Falcons try to trade Mike Vick...there are many in the organization who are very high on Matt Schaub...

College coaches scare me. They fail more than they succeed, especially in the last 10 yrs. It's OK with me as it's someone we had no interest in. I think the Giants will soon be in the market for a HC, as will the Cowpukes.

Does anyone know the last time that a college coach successfully transitioned as a head coach into the NFL?

Wow..

Now Whisenhunt, who I believed was Atlanta's favorite, is still in the running here, barring the Steelers don't go his way.

This is a good bounce for the Cards.

Petrino was a successful OC in the NFL before he went to Louisville. I think he'll be a successful NFL head coach.

This may start a wave of college coaches heading to the NFL...intriguing possibilities:

PIT: Greg Schiano (hey, they hired Bill Cowher when he was 39)

MIA: Urban Meyer (imagine what his stock would be if they win the NCAA Championship?)

NYG: Charlie Weis (this is the job Weis would leave ND for)

OAK: Jeff Tedford (Al Davis could get smart and hire a QB guru to groom what is likely to be the new QBOF: JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn or Brian Brohm)

I don't think Urban Meyer's spread option offense would work in the NFL at all.

I like Whisenhunt....... He probably took the Petrino hiring hard today..... Didn't see this coming.

Rivera - HC
Whisenhunt - OC
Mora Jr. - DC

Whisenhunt is still under contract with the steelers as an OC, I doubt they'll let him leave for the same position here (unless they hire outside the organization and I doubt that).

If Whisenhunt does'nt take a HC job somewhere, he will stay as PIT OC. I like our chances of landing Whisenhunt right now. If I am MB and RG I am on the phone with Whisenhunt right now offering him the job.

Whisenhunt is more interested in the Steelers position than the Falcon's.

He still won't take it until he finds out who is going to be Cowher's successor in Pittsburgh

Schaub is a RFA. I heard an interview on FOX radio on Saturday where he was saying he thought he's built a strong case to be a starter somewhere. I don't see the Falcons holding onto him as a back-up, so a QBOTF might be on the table (for the Falcons) at draft-time.

As a RFA, they have the right to match any offer if they decided he was their guy. It all depends on how highly Petrino thinks of Vick

Boy the Falcons sure work fast. I wonder how many interviews they had to sit trough?

Great point, NM. Imagine what it feels like to be Mike Singletary right now. He supposedly interviewed for the job in Atlanta today.

Wonder if he feels like the token minority interview?

I don't think anyone will pay Schaub so much that the Falcons will not match. That'd be crazy not to match. On any play Mike Vick is a hit away from being done for the season. Schaub is very capable. I'd be surprised if the Falcons didn't retain him.

Even better...don't be surprised if Schaub's the starter this year.

Who was the minority that they interviewed?
