1. the non-signing of Faneca in the past was related to the protracted reaching of an agrrement with Fitz.
2. Logan Mankins is the 'big bucks' LG available at this point.
3. A 'quality' LT on the market at this point? who...

The easy answer is Jared Gaither. Cards should've used a supplemental draft pick on him five years ago, but got gun-shy. The Ravens don't want to invest in him when they already have two starting-caliber OTs and one's a first-round pick.

Gaither isn't without question marks and warts, but he is a legit starter at the LT spot. Ironically, Gaither before his injury was the player that the Cards hoped Levi Brown would become.

I'm almost positive NE franchised him. I don't know if signed his tender, and what those ramifications are, but I'm pretty sure he's not on the open market. If he was, sign him ASAP.

They franchised him. I saw on KFFL that the Bears wouldn't pursue him because of it. Unless the franchise tag goes away, we won't go after him.

Kudos to Faneca. He said in a radio interview that he made his mind up a month ago, but didn't want to tip our hand in the draft just in case we wanted to fill a spot, so didn't announce it to the public.

I heard that as well. That's pretty cool of him.

I know that could certainly be seen as the reason CC, but I just get frustrated because there is always some reason.

I don't think he is available.

Gaither is the guy I personally had in mind. I didn't put any names because I do think there will be some quality guys available but with all the labor issues going on I don't know exactly who anymore.

I probably should have given my definition of "quality" to help you understand where I'm coming from as well. I, IMHO, believe that Brown is bad enough that many FA starting LT's would be seen as a quality replacement and up-grade to Brown so you really would not have to aim too high to to be considered "quality".

I like what K9 says about Gaither so I quoted that as well.

YAY! Now we can have Hadnot in where he should have been to begin with.

Any chance Levi retires?

I had hoped for better things from Faneca last year. I suppose he did as well. Perhaps he is one of those players (few that they are) that knows when it's time to move on to the next phase. I wish him the best. He was a very nice, gracious player when I met him at training camp.

I would guess this is "partly" due to the ongoing strike.

Why do you say that? And this is not a strike. :)

strike, lockout, walkout not playing, it all adds up to the same thing we have no football. sort of like there is no union. a rose by any other name smells the same.

I say that because in life it sometimes happens that there is a straw that breaks the camels back. he has been around a long time and probably would have retired next year if not this. if retirement was going to be part of his plan this year he likely would have made the call some months ago. with the lockout going on and appearing to be lasting a long time he very well may have decided to just get out and not trying to get that old body back in shape at the last moment. seems a reasonable assessment to me. then what do I know?

The team needs to re-sign Lutui and Sendlien. Together with Hadnot, at least the interior of our line would be stable enough. With the lockout growing longer, I think the more consistency we keep from last year the better off we will be this year. I see Hadnot as being an upgrade from Faneca. I think last year the coaches were more interested in being loyal to Faneca than playing the better player (i.e. Hadnot).

One thing for sure, he will never be in the ring of honor. In fact nobody will ever remember he played for the Cardinals!

Clabo will never see free agency.

G:
Robert Gallery
Justin Blalock
Harvey Dahl
Derrick Dockery

T: (if we get one)
Jamal Brown
Jerrod Bushrod
Matt Light
Gallery is interesting considering I wanted us to draft him in 2004(when we got Fitz) but he's been just average which means he's a lot better than what we have.

FWIW---I thought Faneca worked very hard and put forth solid performances for the Cardinals. He was an upgrade in the running game...and his pass pro was better than advertised.

Regardless of whether or not Hadnot-for-Faneca would be an improvement, the reality is that we lost a starter and got nothing in return.

Should Hadnot step up, we'll no longer have as much depth at G (& possibly center).

Add to this, a bit of uncertainty involving Lutui and Sendlein's contract status and the need for one or probably two additional linemen becomes a priority almost equal in status to adding a starting QB
